Labour market slack in Cyprus higher than EU average, according to Eurostat

The unmet demand for employment (or labour market slack) amounted to 14.5% of the extended labour force (aged 15-74 years) in the EU during the second quarter of 2021, according to data published by Eurostat.

Eurostat notes that a major component of the labour market slack is unemployment, which amounted for almost half of the labour market slack (7.0% of the extended labour force in the EU) during the second quarter of 2021.

The remaining groups making up the labour market slack were: ‘persons available to work but not seeking employment’ (3.8% of the extended labour force), ‘underemployed part-time workers’ (2.9%) and ‘persons seeking work but not immediately available’ (0.8%).

Cyprus among countries where gender equality indicates progress

Cyprus is among the countries in the EU where gender equality has indicated progress in 2019, according to the Gender Equality Index 2021.

The index, released on Thursday, showed, according to the European Institute for Gender Equality Director Carlien Scheele, that “Europe has made fragile gains in gender equality. But big losses are emerging as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The economic fallout is lasting longer for women, while life expectancy for men has dropped”.

She also said the “Index findings can help Europe’s leaders tackle the different effects of the pandemic on women and men and alleviate the unequal short and long-term impacts.”

Cyprus one of the nine countries that recycled more than half of plastic packaging waste generated in 2019

A total of 51% of plastic packaging waste generated in Cyprus in 2019 were recycled, compared to 41% in the EU average, according to data published by Eurostat.

In 2019, each person living in the EU generated 34.4 kg of plastic packaging waste, out of which 14.1 kg was recycled.

Between 2009 and 2019, the volume of plastic packaging waste generated per inhabitant increased by 24% (an increase of 6.7 kg per person).

The recycling volume of plastic packaging waste increased sharply over the same period, by 50% (an increase of 4.7 kg person).

Eurostat notes however that this means that the amount of plastic packaging that wasn’t recycled increased by 2.0 kg per inhabitant since 2009.

Eurostat: 24% of children in the EU and 19% of children in Cyprus were at risk of poverty

In 2020, 24.2% of children and teenagers (less than 18 years old) in the EU were at risk of poverty or social exclusion compared with 21.7% of adults (18 to 64 years old) and 20.4% of older people (65 years old or over), according to data presented in a press release by Eurostat, the statistical office of the EU.

In the case of Cyprus, 19.0% of children and teenagers were at risk of poverty or social exclusion, compared with 22.5% of those aged over 65.

Among the EU countries, Romania recorded the highest rate of children at risk of poverty or social exclusion (41.5%) in 2020, followed by Bulgaria (36.2%), Spain (31.8%) and Greece (31.5%).

The lowest percentages were recorded in Slovenia (12.1%), Czechia (12.9%), Denmark (13.5%) and Finland (14.5%).

Cyprus and Greece continue to adopt a common line and make joint efforts with a view to avert the new fait accompli which Turkey attempts to create, Cypriot Foreign Minister, Nikos Christodoulides, and Greek Alternate Foreign Minister, responsible for European Affairs, Miltiadis Varvitsiotis, said on Wednesday.

Cyprus Defence Minister attends military parade in Thessaloniki

Cyprus` Defence Minister Charalambos Petrides attended the military parade in Thessaloniki to mark the anniversary of “Ohi Day”, the celebrated on October 28, expressing Cyprus` gratitude to Greece for the support to safeguard its territorial integrity.

In his statements after the parade, Petrides congratulated the Greek Armed Forces and Security Forces for their performance.

“This year is a special year for Hellenism as it marks 200 years since the beginning of the Greek Revolution which signalled the foundation of the modern Greek State,” Petridis said.

Progress on appointing a UN envoy for Cyprus should be expected in the coming weeks, says Spokesman

In the coming weeks, we should expect the issue of the appointment of a UN envoy to make progress, said Government Spokesman Marios Pelekanos.

Answering questions in Paphos on Thursday after the parade to mark the anniversary of the “Ohi Day” he said that consultations continue and we should expect that in the next weeks, the Secretary-General will proceed with the appointment of an envoy”.

Eight individuals and 4 establishment owners were fined for violations of COVID-19 measures

Eight individuals and four establishment owners were fined by the Police for violations of COVID measures in a total of 2,967 checks across Cyprus in the last 24 hours.

According to the Police, in Nicosia in 1,273 checks 2 people were fined, in Larnaka in a total of 536 checks no one was fined and in Limassol 1 citizen was fined in a total of 179 checks.

In Pafos the Police booked 3 citizens in 182 checks as well as four establishment owners, in Famagusta the Police carried out 343 checks and fined 2 people and in Morphou no violations were found in 141 checks.
