FinMin says economy growing, unemployment in decline

The Finance Ministry in a statement issued on Thursday has said that Cyprus` economy is in a course of growth and that according to figures released by Eurostat unemployment in August dropped to 4.4% compared to 8.6% in August 2020, continuing a decline which started in July 2021.

The Ministry points out that the unemployment rate is lower than the average in the Eurozone and one of the lowest among EU member states. The unemployment rate in August stands at 7.5% compared to 8.6% in August 2020.

According to the Ministry, these figures along wit the GDP growth in second quarter of 2021 show that the economy is growing and there is a positive outlook as a result of the prudent fiscal policy by the government.

Retail trade turnover value and and volume up in first seven monhts of this year

Retail trade turnover value and volume were up by 8.6% and 8.1% respectively in the first seven months of this year, data released by the Cyprus Statistical Service show on Monday.

In particular, according to the Statistical Service, the turnover value index of retail trade for July increased by 9.7% compared to the corresponding month of the previous year.

For the same month, the turnover volume index of retail trade increased by 4.9% compared to the corresponding month of the previous year.

For the period January-July 2021 the value index is estimated to have recorded an increase of 8.6% and the volume index an increase of 8.1% compared to the same period of 2020.

Cyprus police fine 19 individuals and 5 establishment owners over Covid measures violations

Cyprus reported 19 individuals and 5 establishment owners or managers for violating protective measures to contain the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.

A Police spokesperson told CNA that in the last 24 hours ending on 06:00 local time on Monday, the force carried out 3,070 checks throughout the government-controlled areas.

In Nicosia, the Police carried out 965 checks reporting 4 individuals and 2 shop owners, in Limassol 229 checks were carried out with 6 individuals reported, in Larnaca 618 checks with 2 individuals and 1 shop owner reported, in Pafos 218 checks were made with 2 individuals and 2 shop owners reported, in Famagusta 448 checks were carried out with 5 individuals fined, while 151 checks were made in Morphou with no fines issued.

Cyprus reports one death from COVID and 117 new cases Monday, 65 patients in hospitals

Cyprus Health Ministry on Monday reported the death of a patient from COVID and 117 new cases bringing total deaths to 555 and cases to 120,615. The positivity rate stands at 0,18%. The Ministry said that 65 patients are in hospitals of whom 24 in serious condition. According to figures, 56.53% of the patients are unvaccinated.

Moreover the Ministry announced that 11 post-COVID patients who are no longer infectious, are intubated in serious condition in ICUs. The new cases were detected from a total of 63,823 tests (rapid and PCR).

The deceased is a male 75 years old who died today at the ICU of Nicosia General Hospital. Of the 555 deceased 352 are male (63%), and 203 female (37%) and the median age is 76,4 years.

Of the 24 hospitalized in serious condition, 13 are intubated, one is in an ICU and 10 in ACUs.

Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot teachers’ unions honor World Teacher’s Day

Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot teachers` unions honor World Teacher`s Day October 5th with a joint statement in which they point out that Teacher`s Day is not just a day to celebrate but a day for mutual respect, understanding, cooperation, solidarity and common struggle for the improvement of the profession and for the efforts for a just and viable solution for the Cyprus problem.

In the statement the teachers from both communities call on all their colleagues for a moment of silence tomorrow at 12 local time in memory of the people who died during the pandemic and to remind their students of the repercussions of the pandemic for millions of people around the world.

They also note that it is day to honor the teachers who lost their lives due to COVID adding that the pandemic affected education as well .

?ew country categorization announced by authorities, in effect Thursday

Cyprus Health Ministry on Monday announced a new categorization of countries based on their epidemiological data, to come into effect Thursday, October 7th. Seven countries change category. Malta moves to green category and Hungary to orange, Liechtenstein, Norway and Japan move to orange as well and Luxembourg and Singapore move to red category. Rwanda and Chile, following an EC decision, are classified in the list of countries from where non-essential traveling is allowed to EU countries.

The categorisation for the countries of the European Union and the European Economic Area (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway) as well as Switzerland, in the Green, Orange or Red Categories, is based on that of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).

??use President underlines role of Parliaments in addressing environmental challenges

House President Annita Demetriou underlined the role of Parliaments in tackling the environmental challenges, during the 14th Conference of Chairs of Parliaments of small European states taking place at the city of Herceg Novi in Montenegro.

She said that environmental disasters as a result of climate crisis are becoming more intense and therefore it is urgent to intervene to meet the targets set in the Paris Agreement.

Demetriou underlined that the Mediterranean Sea is a hot spot as regards the climate crisis and the challenges the countries of the region face, need a joint action.

We do not support a confederation in Cyprus, says UK Foreign Minister

UK’s Minister for the European Neighbourhood Wendy Morton reiterated London’s “unwavering” support for a comprehensive, just and lasting settlement of the Cyprus issue during the annual ‘Conservative Friends of Cyprus’ reception on the sidelines of the Conservative Party in Manchester.

Addressing the event on Sunday night, Morton said that such settlement should be based on the existing UN parameters of a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality. “We do not support a confederation,” she stressed.

National Council meeting takes place on Monday

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades convenes on Monday morning the National Council, the country`s top advisory body, to discuss the latest developments in relation to the Cyprus problem.

Government Spokesperson, Marios Pelekanos has told CNA that President Anastasiades will also will listen to the views of political party leaders.

The last National Council meeting took place on September 1st, before President Anastasiades` departure for New York to take part in the UN General Assembly.

Cyprus, Greece, France and Italy take part in ‘Evnomia’ aeronautical exercise

An aeronautical exercise entitled “Evnomia-2-2021” takes place between October 4 and 7 in the maritime area west and south of Cyprus.

The exercise will include a big range of nautical and aerial exercises and search and rescue scenarios, a Defence Ministry press release says.

“This four-party initiative constitutes a concrete proof of the common understanding of the four European states as part of a de-escalation policy which aims to enhance security and stability in the broader region and to guarantee freedom of navigation,” the press release says.
