Police fine 30 people, 11 establishment owners for violations of COVID-19 measures

Police fined 30 people and 11 establishment owners after 6,638 checks in the last 48 hours for violations of the COVID-19 measures.

A press release from the Police said that almost half of the checks, 3,111, were about safe pass possession.

The majority of the citizens that were reported by the Police did not wear a face mask. Most of the establishment owners were fined for allowing employees not to wear protective masks, for lack of signage or for allowing customers to dance. In some cases, establishment owners did not carry a safe pass.

“The Police remind that the supervision of the implementation of measures is not only a responsibility of the Police and other departments of the public sector, but it is everyone’s responsibility. Each person in charge of their establishment plays their own role and there should be a horizontal distribution

Commissioner Photiou says ordeal of missing persons` relatives must end

Presidential Commissioner Photis Photiou said that for 47 years we are living in pain because of the missing persons` issue adding that the pain and the ordeal of their beloved ones must end.

He said that Turkey must finally give answers to what happened to all the missing persons and called on the UN and the EU to exert pressure on Ankara. Photiou also said that the President of the Republic and our side carry on the struggle based on principles and the rule of law.

President travels to Thessaloniki to address event for Cyprus’ participation in Greek War of Independence

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades travels to Thessaloniki to address an event for Cyprus’ participation in the Greek War of Independence, organized by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, on Monday.

Earlier he will be received by the mayor of the city, Konstantinos Zervas, at the Town Hall.

A press release by the Presidency says that the President on Tuesday will attend the mass to take place at Agios Demetrios Church, the patron Saint of the city, and on the occasion of the liberation of Thessaloniki from the Ottomans in 1912.

Delivering a eulogy on Sunday for the fallen and missing persons of Trachoni village, the Minister said that the President has made it clear more than once that the only solution the Greek Cypriot side can accept is the solution of bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality as stated in the UNSC Resolutions and based on EU principles.

He went on to say that this solution cannot include the anachronistic system of guarantees or unilateral right for intervention, and must safeguard peace and justice.

Interior Minister says he hopes for EU sensitivity to curb number of irregular migrants entering Cyprus

Interior Minister Nicos Nourris said on Sunday he expected EU sensitivity about external borders in other member states to be applied also in the case of Cyprus, in a bid to curb irregular migration.

In statements in Troulloi, a village in Larnaca district, the Minister, asked to comment about a fresh wave of migrant arrivals in the free areas of Famagusta, said October has been “a very bad month” with more than 1,500 arrivals of irregular migrants as of today, all of them through the buffer zone separating the Turkish-occupied areas from the free areas of the Republic of Cyprus.

The Minister expressed concern as the majority of migrant flows stem from Sub-Saharan Africa.
