Deputy Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the UN Polly Ioannou stressed the importance of having meaningful participation by women in peace processes.

Delivering a speech on ?hursday at the Annual Open Debate on Women, Peace and Security (WPS) titled “Investing in Women in Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding” Ioannou said that it is also important to recognize the fact that peace is more sustainable when it emanates from inclusive processes.

“More important than participation quotas, is the task of ensuring the qualitative contribution of women to the substantive issues under consideration in a peace process.

UN active to create conditions for Cyprus talks’ resumption, says Foreign Minister

Cyprus Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides described as particularly positive the fact that following President Anastasiades` intervention, the European Council included a statement on Turkey`s obligations on migration in relation to Cyprus, asking for full implementation of the 2016 EU-Turkey statement on migrations. He also said that there is an activity on UN level for the resumption of the peace talks.

Speaking to the press on Saturday, the Minister said that there was a respond on behalf of our EU partners as regards Turkey`s obligations.

President sends letter to UNSG on Turkey’s provocations, asks for envoy appointment

Cyprus President sent a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres reporting Turkey`s illegal actions in the island`s exclusive economic zone, in the fenced off town of Varosha and in Karpasia peninsula.

The letter is dated 21 October 2021 and according to a statement by Spokesperson Marios Pelekanos, the President asks the SG for his more active engagement with the immediate appointment of a special envoy in order for the right conditions to be created for the resumption of the peace talks. These talks, he said, need to lead to a solution based on the UN Security Council resolutions and decisions.

Defense Minister says that Cyprus’ recent history dictates awareness for reunification

Cyprus’ recent history and the tragic events of the 1974 invasion dictate a constant awareness to carry on the struggle to reunite our country, Defense Minister Charalambos Petrides has said.

In an address at the funeral of soldier Stavros Stavrinou, who was killed during the Turkish invasion and his remains were exhumed in 2015 in an area in the occupied town of Keryneia, the Minister said that after 47 years of a painful waiting, today we pay our respects to a fallen soldier who sacrificed his life for his country.

Petrides said that today’s aching ceremony is a reminder that we need to carry on the fight to reunite our island.
