Thirty-one individuals and one establishment booked for violation of COVID-19 measures

Thirty-one individuals and a bakery were reported by police over violations of COVID-19 measures in the last 24 hours, during 2.749 checks conducted across the government-controlled areas.

According to the police press office, in Nicosia, four citizens and one bakery were reported during 1.128 checks and in Limassol six citizens were booked during 194 checks. In Larnaka, the Police reported five citizens during 456 checks and in Pafos three citizens were reported during 151 checks. In Famagusta 13 citizens were reported during 456 checks. No reports occurred in Morphou where 96 checks had been conducted.

A total of 87% of fatalities reported due to COVID, according to National Surveillance Report

From the 644 people who passed away after being diagnosed with COVID until 13th October, 559 (87%), died due to COVID, according to the Deaths Report of the National Surveillance Report as of 11/10/2021.

The report said that as of October 11th, 2021, 120,666 COVID-19 cases have been diagnosed, of which 559 died due to COVID-19, the case fatality risk being 0.5%.

In the last 14 days (28 September – 11 October, 2021), 1,345 cases were diagnosed. The median age was 34 years (IQR: 21-47 years); 51.5% were males (693), and 48.5% females (652). By place of exposure, information was available for 1,321 (98.2%) cases, of which 20.3% (268) were imported and 79.7% (1,053) were locally acquired.

Vaccination portal open for appointments, 79% fully vaccinated

The Vaccination Portal reopened on October 15th encouraging beneficiaries to go ahead with the 1st and third dose of the COVID-19 vaccination, as the fully vaccinated in Cyprus have reached 79%.

A Ministry of Health press release said that in an effort to encourage vaccination of beneficiaries against COVID-19 and develop the maximum possible protection of the population, appointments for vaccination with the 1st dose and with the 3rd dose are available following a technical upgrade to the Vaccination Portal from Friday, October 15th.

Appointments for new vaccinations (1st dose), are open to all aged 12 and over.

Age limit for a COVID-19 third dose vaccine drops to 60 years old in Cyprus

The age limit for a COVID-19 third dose vaccine drops to 60 years in Cyprus while new vulnerable groups of the population will get the booster dose as well.

The Council of Ministers approved on Friday a recommendation by Health Minister, Michalis Hadjipantelas, about the new groups of the population to which priority should be given for vaccination with the booster/3rd dose of the vaccine against COVID-19.

According to a Health Ministry press release, the aim of the effort is to protect the groups of the population of which, based on scientific documentation, immune response decreases following a certain period of time.

Jeffrey Sachs praises Cyprus President for his climate change initiative, offers full support

Jeffrey Sachs, Director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University, Global Director of UN SDSN, has said that Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades’ initiative on climate change is of tremendous significance and pledged to offer full support for its implementation.

Addressing a reception hosted by the President in honour of the participants of the ‘2nd International Conference on Climate Change in the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East: Challenges and Solutions’ in Paphos, Sachs conveyed his “tremendous satisfaction and commitment” to do everything that “we can to support you in this tremendous venture and this visionary initiative”.

During the two-day conference, Anastasiades said Cyprus is determined to take all necessary steps at a national level to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.

Cyprus President underlines significance of concerted regional response to address climate change

Cyprus President, Nicos Anastasiades, underlined the need for coordinating a concerted regional response in addressing climate change and its effects in his address during a dinner hosted on Thursday evening, at the Presidential Palace, in honor of the participants in the 2nd International Conference on Climate Change in the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East.

Anastasiades expressed his sincere feelings of gratitude for the participants` “invaluable contribution in our efforts to establish a comprehensive Regional Action Plan for tackling climate change and its effects in the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East region.”

“An initiative undertaken by the Republic of Cyprus, with the aim of coordinating a concerted regional response in addressing the challenge we are facing, in line with the Paris Agreement goals,” he added.

Director Panikos Chrysanthou and poet Nese Yasin awarded European Citizen’s prize 2021

Director Panikos Chrysanthou and poet Nese Yasin received Friday the European Citizen’s Prize 2021 for their cooperation which led to documentaries ‘’Our Wall’’ and “My Homeland”.

The award ceremony was held at the Home for Cooperation in the buffer zone in Nicosia and the two artists spoke with words of passion and love about their common land and their struggle for reunification.

Yiasin in her speech said that both her and Panikos are two people who were hurt from the past and fight for the future.

Theresa Villiers MP highlights importance of Cyprus freedom in communication with the new UK Foreign Secretary

Theresa Villiers, MP for Chipping Barnet in north London, has written to the newly appointed UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, to highlight the importance of freedom for Cyprus.

She forwarded on to Truss a letter written on behalf of the Board of British Cypriots by Elias Dinenis, Doros Partasides, Elissa Ellina, Stella Protopapa-Dinenis, and Antonis Savvides. The letter was highlighting and condemning Turkey’s negative stance and provocative actions regarding the Cyprus issue.

Cyprus President to denunciate to UN and EU the granting of land to Turkish occupying army

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades will denunciate to the UN and the EU the latest provocation on the part of the Turkish occupying illegal regime which has granted a large parcel of land to the Turkish occupying forces in the island, Government Spokesperson Marios Pelekanos has said.

In a written statement on Friday, Pelekanos said that “following the pseudostate`s decision to grant an area of land in the occupied areas and in particular at the Apostle Andreas Cape to the occupying army, the President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades will send a letter to the UN Secretary General, the Security Council members and EU leaders of state and government, to denunciate the new illegal and provocative action on the part of the occupying regime.”

Varosha will be on Foreign Affairs Council agenda on Monday, EU official says

The situation regarding the fenced off area of Varosha, as well as developments in the Eastern Mediterranean, will be on the agenda of Monday’s Foreign Affairs Council of the EU which will take place in Luxembourg, a European official told journalists during a media briefing today.

The official explained that the issue has been placed on the agenda by High Representative Josep Borrell in accordance with his statement on behalf of the EU in July, in which he had said that EU Ministers would “consider actions at their next meeting, in case of non-reversal of Turkey’s actions”.
