Cyprus police issue 24 fines for COVID-19 measures violations

Police in Cyprus fined 14 people and 10 owners of establishments in the last 24 hours in the context of checks carried out about the implementation of measures in place to contain the COVID-19 pandemic.

 

As a police press officer told CNA, 3,157 checks were carried out across Cyprus in the last 24 hours.

 

In Nicosia out of 1,252 checks 8 individuals and 2 owners of establishments were fined, in Limassol out 252 checks 9 individuals, in Larnaca out of 514 checks one individual was fined, in Pafos out of 537 checks 8 owners of establishments were fined, in Famagusta out of 381 checks 6 individuals were fined, while in Morphou police reported no-one after 89 checks.

Eurostat: Unemployment significantly lower in Cyprus this August compared to last year

In August 2021, the euro area seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate was 7.5%, down from 7.6% in July 2021 and from 8.6% in August 2020. The EU unemployment rate was 6.8% in August 2021, down from 6.9% in July 2021 and from 7.7% in August 2020, according to figures are published by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.

 

In the case of Cyprus, the unemployment rate fell significantly to 4.4% (20 thousand people) in August 2021, compared to 5.2% in July 2021 (23 thousand) and compared to 8.6% (39 thousand) in August last year.

 

Eurostat estimates that 14,469 million men and women in the EU, of whom 12,162 million in the euro area, were unemployed in August 2021. European Council President wishes Cypriots all the best for Independence Day

European Council President Charles Michel wished all the best to all Cypriots on the occasion of the celebrations of the Independence Day of the Republic of Cyprus, in a tweet posted from his official account.

 

“I wish #Cyprus and all Cypriots around the world all the best for their Independence Day today,” Michel wrote in Greek and English, tagging the official account of President Anastasiades and adding the flags of the Republic of Cyprus and the European Union.

President says would be happier if Turkish Cypriots celebrated with us today

President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades said on Friday that he would be happier if our Turkish Cypriot compatriots were celebrating Cyprus` Independence Day with us today.

 

Speaking to the press following the military parade in Nicosia, the President said that today we celebrate the 61st anniversary of the foundation of the Cyprus Republic, a state that was created as a result of the anticolonial struggle.

 

He said that today we honour and pay respects to all those who sacrificed their lives for the liberation of our country, to those who defended Cyprus` integrity and sovereignty when these were at stake and during the 1974 Turkish invasion.

Cyprus sends message of peace and stability, says Defence Minister, hails Greece-France arms deal

Defence Minister Charalampos Petrides said that Cyprus sends messages of peace and stability for the region, based on international law. At the same time he hailed the recent defence deal between Greece and France.

 

Speaking to the press following the military parade for Cyprus` Independence Day on Friday, the Minister said that the wound the Turkish invasion caused on the island is still open as the invader is still here reminding us that the struggle is still ongoing.

Median age of COVID infected individuals the last 14 days in Cyprus is 34 years

Cyprus authorities diagnosed 119,072 COVID-19 cases by September 24th and 552 deaths , due to the disease with the case fatality risk to stand at 0.5%. In the last 14 days (11 – 24 September, 2021), 1,606 cases were diagnosed and the median age was 34 years. For 99.8% cases (available data), 50.5% were females and 49.5% males, according to the National Surveillance Report published Friday.

 

According to the Report, as of September 26th, 84 people were still hospitalised (currently notified and among those diagnosed till September 24th). The median age of patients still hospitalized due to COVID-19 is 59 years , 52.4% are males, and 30.8% out of 78 with information on district) are from Limassol district. Thirty-six cases (60%) still hospitalised have comorbidities (out of 60 with available information

British High Commissioner recognises contribution of Cypriot volunteer with Commonwealth Points of Light award

The British High Commissioner to Cyprus, Stephen Lillie, this week hosted a small tea-party to award Patricia Phaedonos as the 197th Commonwealth Point of Light in recognition of her exceptional voluntary service in support of women’s, victims’ and LGBTQ+ rights.

 

Α press release circulated on Friday by the High Commission says that Patricia, 44, is a graduate of the UK’s University of Sunderland and University of Derby, full-time school counsellor and long-serving volunteer with organisations including; Accept Cyprus, supporting LGBTQ+ rights; and the Cyprus Family Planning Association, the leading organisation on sexual and reproductive health and rights in Cyprus.

 

Patricia has also volunteered extensively with the Cyprus-based SPAVO (Association for the Prevention and Handling of Violence in the Family) where she worked to build greater capacity for hand

Cyprus reports 2 deaths due to COVID-19, 59 new cases, 73 people are in hospital on Friday

Authorities in Cyprus reported two more deaths from COVID-19 and 59 new cases on Friday. The positivity rate stands at 0.22%. At the same time 73 patients with the disease are in hospital, 30 of whom in a serious condition.

 

According to a Health Ministry press release 61.85% of patients with COVID-19 treated in hospital has not been vaccinated.

 

The total number of deaths is 554 and the total number of cases since the outbreak of the pandemic is 120,331.

 

Ten post-COVID patients who are no longer infectious are still treated in ICUs intubated and in a serious condition.

 

On Friday 26,652 tests were carried out, 4,534 by PCR method and 22,118 by antigen rapid method.

 

The deceased were a man aged 82 and a woman aged 54 who both passed away at Nicosia General Hospital ICU on Friday. The total number of deaths is now 554
