The 2nd press online event of the project SUPMed in Cyprus, organised by Cyprus Hotel Association, was concluded on Tuesday, a press release says.

According to the press release circulated by the Cyprus Hotel Association, the Association successfully implemented the 2nd press online event of the project titled “Reducing the Consumption and Disposal of Single-use Plastics in the Tourism Industry in Cyprus, Greece and Malta”, also known as “SUPMed”, in Cyprus.

Several stakeholders of the project, based in Cyprus, were invited, such as representatives of tourist establishments, suppliers and SMEs, representatives from local and national public authorities, etc.

CBC fines Bank of Cyprus with €277,000 over AML violations carried out between 2008 and 2015

The Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC) said it has fined Bank of Cyprus, Cyprus’ largest lender, with €277,000 over violations of the anti-money laundering law conducted in the period 2008 until 2015.

An AML audit in the bank was carried out in 2020, the CBC said.

In a press release the CBC said that within the remit of its supervisory role, the regulator may take, under subsection (6) of section 59 of the Prevention and Suppression of Money Laundering Activities Law of 2007, as subsequently amended (“the Law”), any of the measures listed therein in the event of non-compliance by a supervised person with the provisions of Part VIII of the Law or its relevant Directives.

Industrial production accelerates by an annual 9.3% in January – August

Industrial production marked an increase of 9.3% in the period of January – August 2021 compared with the respective period of last year, the Statistical Service of Cyprus (Cystat) has said.

According to Cystat, in August 2021 in August 2021, the Industrial Production Index reached 117.1 units (base 2015=100), recording an increase of 8.6% compared to August 2020.

Cyprus and GCC to sing MoU aiming to further enhance their relations

Cyprus and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) are a step closer to signing an MoU on consultations aiming to further enhance their relations, Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Christodoulides has said.

Chistodoulides met with the GCC Secretary General Nayef Falah M. Al-Hajraf in Nicosia, in their third meeting this year.

In statements following the meeting, Christodoulides said that Al Hajraf visit “reflects our joint political will and commitment — evident also by Cyprus’ extensive diplomatic network in the Gulf region — of Cyprus and the GCC to further enhance our strong ties and relations in concrete ways, for the benefit of the peoples, of our countries, and of our region as a whole.”

Defence Minister to attend military parade in Thessaloniki for Oxi Day

Defence Minister Charalambos Petrides will attend the military parade in Thessaloniki, Greece on Friday.

An official press release said that Petrides will visit Thessaloniki at the invitation of National Defence Minister Nikolas Panagiotopoulos and Governor of the region of Central Macedonia, Apostolos Tzitzikosta.

He will represent the Republic of Cyprus at the grand military parade for Oxi Day on Thursday, 28 October, which commemorates Greece`s refusal to capitulate to the Axis forces in 1940 and its victory against Italy on the Albanian front.

Total fuel sales rise significantly in September 2021

Total fuel sales rose by an annual 14.8% in September while total sales in the period of January – September 2021 marked a marginal rise of 0.9%.

According to data released by Cystat fuel inventory in end-September declined by 10.5% compared with August of 2021.

In September 2021 total fuel sales amounted to 127,246 tonnes.

Fuel provisions to airplanes spiked by an annual 140.4% in September as aviation activities are recovering from the Covid pandemic, marine gasoil rose by 48.3% year on year. Sales of liquefied petroleum gases accelerated by 55.9%, kerosene by 30.0% and heating gasoil by 20.6%.

Sales of motor gasoline and road diesel rose by a marginal 0,1%, while a decrease was recorded in the sales of light fuel oil with 29.9% and asphalt by -23.8%.

Ukraine reaffirms principled stance on Cyprus issue

Ukraine’s ambassador to Cyprus, Ruslan Nimchynskyi reaffirmed his country’s principled stance and support of efforts for a solution to the Cyprus problem.

The diplomat was speaking during a meeting on Wednesday with Speaker Annita Demetriou who thanked him for Ukraine’s stance on the Cyprus issue.

Cyprus and Ukraine, she said, remain committed to respecting international law and European principles and values.

Cyprus announces one death and 200 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday

Cypriot health authorities announced the death of an 85-year-old woman and 200 new COVID-19 infections on Wednesday, bringing the total number of fatalities to 571 and of infections to 123, 908 since the outbreak of the pandemic.

A press release issued by the Ministry of Health says that the daily positivity rate stood at 0.36%.

After the death of the 85-year old at Famagusta General Hospital, total deaths rose to 571 of whom 363 or 64% men and 208 or 36% women, with a median age of 76.1 years.

According to the Ministry, 56 patients receive treatment in public hospitals, of whom 18 are being treated in a serious condition in ACUs and ICUs. Of the 18 patients in serious condition, 8 are intubated in ICUs, three in ICU without a ventilator and 7 patients are in ACUs.

Cyprus closer than ever to implementing local governance reform, Interior Minister says

Interior Minister Nicos Nouris updated the participants in the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe on the progress made on the implementation of the reform of local government in Cyprus.

Speaking through teleconference during the Congress, which takes place in Strasbourg, Nouris said that the implementation of the reforms will satisfy the main and most important recommendations of the Congress, based also on the latest 2021 report.

The recommendations included, inter alia, the strengthening of the role and institutional autonomy of local authorities, the provision of adequate financial means and the establishment of transparent and predictable financial mechanisms.

Cabinet extends COVID measures up to November 9, decides on booster dose for J&J

Cabinet decided on Wednesday to extend the period for COVID measures currently in place up to November 9 and to start the administration of a booster dose for those citizens who were vaccinated with J&J shots. The booster dose will be given to specific groups of people as a start.

Health Minister Michalis Hadjipantela submitted a proposal before the Cabinet with the aim to safeguard that the epidemiological picture of the country will not deteriortate given that we are entering the winter and there is a flare up of seasonal infections all over Europe and some countries have returned to strict measures.
