UNSG’s spokesperson says not issuing a press release on Cyprus “a conscious decision”

The UN Secretary – General`s Deputy Spokesman, Farhan Haq, has said that he does not expect at this stage anything as regards a press release on Cyprus that was expected to be issued, after Monday`s meeting of the UNSG Antonio Guterres in New York, with Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar.

He went on to say that “when we don`t say something, it`s not that we`ve forgotten; it`s that a conscious decision is taken not to say something.”

Asked why it has taken so long to issue a press release on Cyprus following the meeting between the Secretary-General and the two Cyprus leaders and whether there will be a statement or not, Haq replied: “To be honest, at this stage, I`m not expecting anything.

General Secretary of KTOS expresses gratitude to Cyprus’ Foreign Minister for issues concerning Turkish Cypriots

General Secretary of KTOS, the Cyprus Turkish Teachers` Trade Union, Sener Elcil, expressed his gratitude to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, for his contribution in allowing Turkish Cypriots who travel abroad to have access to a SafePass Certificate, but also for the help to a Turkish Cypriot child facing serious health issues.

“On behalf of the Turkish Cypriot civil society community, I’d like to sincerely thank you for your important initiative on creating opportunity for Republic of Cyprus citizen Turkish Cypriots and especially for the university students to access Safe Pass Certificate who wish to travel abroad to pursue their education in Europe”, says a letter sent to Christodoulides.

Vaccination portal to open on Monday for appointments for third jab against COVID-19 for people 80 years old and over

Cyprus Ministry of Health announced on Saturday that the on-line portal for the arrangement of vaccination appointments against COVID-19 with the 3rd dose, will be available as from Monday, October 4, at 9 a.m. The Vaccination Portal will be available for people aged 80 years old and over.

According to the press relese, aiming at strengthening the immunity of specific groups of the population, the Ministry of Health has so far granted a booster dose to 12,100 people through walk-in centers, mobile units or vaccinations at hospitals.

Next Monday and Tuesday, 3rd dose vaccinations will continue at the walk-in vaccination centers for people aged 80 and over. The walk-in centers are open from 8 am to 13:00.

Beneficiaries who have completed their vaccination abroad and are 80 years or older will not be able to arrange a 3rd

A total of 84 new COVID-19 cases traced on Saturday, no deaths recorded, 73 patients are hospitalized

Eighty-four new COVID-19 cases were traced on Saturday, Cyprus Health Ministry announced, noting that the total number of confirmed cases is now 120,415. The positivity rate stands at 0.15%.

No deaths of COVID-19 patients were recorded and therefore the total number of people who passed away due to COVID-19 remains 554, of whom 351 are men (63%) and 203 are women (37%). Their median age is 76.4 years old.

Moreover, 73 COVID-19 patients are treated in hospital. The situation of 31 of them is critical, while 60.53% of those hospitalized have not been vaccinated.

Ten post-COVID patients who have ceased to be contagious continue to be treated in a critical condition, due to COVID-19, in Intensive Treatment Units and are intubated.

A total of 55,076 tests were carried out using the PCR method (4,529) and antigen rapid tests (50,547).
