Cyprus reports two deaths and 143 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday

Two more people have lost their lives due to COVID-19 in Cyprus, while the Ministry of Health announced 143 new cases on Wednesday.

The positivity rate stands at 0.31%. The number of COVID-19 confirmed cases since the beginning of the pandemic is 122,852.

Sixty – four COVID-19 patients are treated in state hospital, 24 of whom in a serious condition. A percentage of 60% of those hospitalised have not been vaccinated.

Six post-COVID patients who have ceased to be contagious continue to be hospitalised due to COVID-19 in Intensive Care Units and are intubated.

Cyprus MPs travel to Strasbourg for the Conference on the Future of Europe

A Cyprus parliamentary delegation travels to Strasbourg to attend the Conference on the Future of Europe.

The delegation comprises Head of the Foreign Affairs Committee Harris Georgiades and MPs Marina Nikolaou, Chrysis Pantelides and Alexandra Attalides.

The Conference takes place 21-23 October.

An announcement by the Parliament says that the MPs will participate in a preparatory meeting of the delegations of the national parliaments of the EU member states. On Friday various working groups will meet. Georgiades will attend the migration working group, Nikolaou will take part in the working group for a stronger economy, social justice and jobs, Pantelides will attend the group on digital transformation and Attalides will attend the group on climate change and the environment.

Cyprus hosts European Union of Medical Specialists’ Council

Cyprus will host the autumn 2021 European Union of Medical Specialists` (UEMS) Council, following an initiative taken by CYMA, the Cyprus Medical Association.

A press release by CYMA says that the meeting will take place on 22-23 October in Limassol. The UEMS Council will be hybrid, with the possibility to attend both online and on-site.

The Board, Working Groups, Groupings, and Advisory Board meetings will take place on Friday, October 22. The Council Meeting will take place on Saturday, October 23.

The European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS) is the oldest medical organisation in Europe as it celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2018.

With a current membership from 40 countries, it is the representative organisation of the National Associations of Medical Specialists in the European Union and its associated countries.

Police fine 19 individuals and 3 shop owners over Covid protective measures violation

Cyprus Police reported 19 individuals and 3 shop owners for violating measures aiming to contain the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.

A police spokesperson told CNA that in the last 24 hours ending on 06:00 local time carried out 2,833 checks throughout the government-controlled areas.

In Nicosia 1,216 checks were carried out with 4 individuals and 3 shop owners reported, in Limassol 277 were carried out with 3 individuals booked, in Larnaca no reports were made following 581 checks, in Pafos the Police carried out 162 checks with 5 individuals reported, in Famagusta 7 individuals were booked after 377 checks, while no fines were issued after 106 checks.

Case fatality rate due to COVID remains low in Cyprus, healthcare cost at 100 mln

Case fatality rate due to COVID in Cyprus is at 0,46% while the healthcare cost for the pandemic hit 100 million euro, according to Christis Loizides, Executive Head of State Health Services Organization (SHSO).

Speaking during a press conference on Tuesday, Loizides said that since the pandemic broke out, more than 6,000 patients were hospitalized, of whom 600 in ICUs.

He said that SHSO in a short period of time had to restate its infrastructure and to install more than 300 beds in COVID wards including ACUs and to staff 65 new ICUs for COVID.

Annual inflation rate at 3.6% in Cyprus and at the EU level, at 3.4% in the eurozone

The euro area annual inflation rate was 3.4% in September 2021, up from 3.0% in August, while a year earlier, the rate was -0.3%, according to figures published by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.

The annual inflation rate in Cyprus was 3.6% in September 2021, up from 3.3% in August and -1.9% in September 2020.

The annual inflation rate was also at 3.6% in the European Union in average, up from 3.2% in August. A year earlier, the rate was 0.3%.

The lowest annual rates were registered in Malta (0.7%), Portugal (1.3%) and Greece (1.9%). The highest annual rates were recorded in Estonia, Lithuania (both 6.4%) and Poland (5.6%).

Compared with August, annual inflation fell in one Member State, remained stable in one and rose in twenty-five.

Tourist arrivals in Cyprus up by 153.7% annually in first nine months of 2021

Tourist arrivals in Cyprus were up by 153.7% on annual basis in the first nine months of this year, while still down by 60.1% compared to 2019, data released by the Cyprus Statistical Service (CyStat) on Wednesday show.

According to a press release published on CyStat`s website, the arrivals of tourists reached 339,242 in September 2021, recording an increase of 288.4% compared to September 2020 (during which 87,334 arrivals were recorded), and a decrease of 35.3% compared to September 2019 (with 524,707 arrivals).

It says tor the period of January – September 2021, arrivals of tourists totalled 1,299,392 compared to 512,184 in the corresponding period of 2020, recording an increase of 153.7%, and a decrease of 60.1% compared to the period of January – September 2019 (3,260,546 arrivals).

Consumer prices harmonised index up by 3.6% annually in September, down by 0.5% monthly

The harmonised index of consumer prices was up annually by 3.6% this September and down by 0.5% on a monthly basis, data released by the Cyprus Statistical Service (CyStat), on Wednesday, show.

A press release CyStat says that in September 2021 the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices increased by 3.6% when compared to the index of September 2020 while, when compared to the index of August 2021, the HICP decreased by 0.5%.

For the period January – September 2021 the HICP recorded an increase of 1.5% compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.

Compared to September 2020, the greatest changes were recordedin Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels and Transport with percentages of +15.2% and +12.4% respectively.

Finance Minister says green and digital transition to revamp economy in Cyprus

Minister of Finance Constantinos Petrides spoke on revamping the economy via green and digital transition in his speech at Digital Agenda Summit held Wednesday in Nicosia.

The Minister of Finance referred to the Cyprus Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP), amounting to €1.2 billion, which is expected to mobilise more than €1 billion of private funds.

He furthermore said RRP’s goals, was to strengthen the economy’s resilience and the country’s potential for economically, socially and environmentally sustainable long-term growth and welfare.

“The Cypriot plan forms part of an unprecedented coordinated EU response to the COVID-19 crisis, to address common European challenges by embracing the green and digital transitions, to strengthen economic and social resilience and the cohesion of the Single Market,” he said.

Construction materials prices up by nearly 15% annually this September

The prices of construction materials were up on an annual base by nearly 15% this September, data released by the Cyprus Statistical Service (CyStat) on Wednesday, show.

In particular, the price index of construction materials for September 2021 reached 115.78 units (base year 2015=100), recording an increase of 0.51% compared to the previous month.

Compared to the same month of the previous year, CyStat says, the index recorded an increase of 14.92%.

By main commodity category, increases were recorded in metallic products (30.64%), products of wood, insulation materials, chemicals and plastics (15.71%), electromechanical products (11.37%), minerals (2.21%) and mineral products (1.50%).
