French Ambassador discusses EastMed, Cyprus issue and EU Presidency with FM

President Anastasiades denies wrongdoing asked on Pandora Papers upon his arrival at the EU Summit

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades denied any wrongdoing in relation to the accusations included in the Pandora Papers regarding the law firm that bears his name.

Responding to questions on the Pandora Papers upon his arrival at the EU – Western Balkans Summit in Brdo castle, in Slovenia, the President said that the Papers refer to the law firm bearing his name and there are no other implications.

He also pointed out that there is nothing about him building an offshore company to transfer money out of the country.

Number of jobless plunges by 63% in September 2021 driven by tourism and trade

The number of registered unemployed persons in September plunged by an annual 63% with the steep reduction mainly driven by the sectors of Tourism and Trade.

According to data released by the Statistical Service of Cyprus (Cystat), the unemployed persons, registered at the District Labour Offices on the last day of September 2021, declined to 11,324 persons, from 30,718 the year before.

Based on the seasonally adjusted data that show the trend of unemployment, the number of registered unemployed for September 2021 decreased to 15,907 persons in comparison to 18,282 in the previous month, Cystat said.

President of Poland to pay a three-day official visit to Cyprus

President of Poland, Andrzej Duda accompanied by his wife, will pay a three-day official visit to Cyprus, between 6 and 8 of October, at the invitation of the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades.

According to an announcement by the Presidency, President Duda will arrive in Cyprus today afternoon where he will be received by Deputy Minister of Tourism Savvas Perdios.

On the morning of October 7th, President Anastasiades will officially welcome his counterpart of Poland at the Presidential Palace.

Cyprus’ President says Turkey will not hesitate to instrumentalize migrants from Afghanistan

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades said Tuesday that Ankara will not hesitate to push migrants from Afghanistan to the EU and that the management of Afghanistan issue should not allowed to become a “Trojan horse” to justify Turkey’s actions in the region, speaking at the EU informal Summit in the form of a dinner in Slovenia, on the situation in Afghanistan.

According to a Presidency’s press release, during the dinner, the 27 EU Heads of State and Government discussed recent geopolitical developments, including in Afghanistan, the Indo-Pacific and EU-China relations.

In his address on Developments in Afghanistan, the President of the Republic of Cyprus stressed the importance of EU assistance in addressing the serious humanitarian and economic crisis in the country, as well as ensuring respect for basic human rights.

Scientific findings on climate change in the region to be presented during 2nd Cyprus International Conference

The findings of the Regional Scientific Task Forces appointed in the framework of the Cyprus Government Initiative on climate crisis, will be presented and debated during the 2nd International Conference on climate change in the Eastern Meditteranean and the Middle East to take place 13-14 October in Paphos, Cyprus.

The Conference, following the 2018 Conference on the island, will attract leading policy makers, scientists, prominent business people, key civil society stakeholders, and opinion-leaders from around the world.

Sustained de-escalation and abstention from unilateral actions remain crucial for EU-Turkey relations, Commission says

Commission spokesperson for foreign relations Peter Stano reiterated the European Council’s June call to Turkey to abstain from unilateral actions and contribute to sustained de-escalation in the Eastern Mediterranean, as these are crucial criteria for future EU – Turkey relations.

Responding to a question by CNA on recent developments in the Eastern Mediterranean, namely the prevention by Turkey of a Cypriot research vessel (under a Maltese flag) from conducting surveys connected to plans on the construction of the EastMed gas pipeline, the Commission spokesperson recalled the European Council’s June conclusions, in which the leaders “welcomed the then de-escalation, but stressed the need for the de-escalation to remain sustainable”.

Queen’s Baton Relay to begin its journey in Cyprus ahead of 2022 Commonwealth Games

The Queen`s Baton Relay will begin its 294-day journey across the globe in Cyprus, the Cyprus Olympic Committee (COC) has announced during a press conference.

The baton will travel to 72 Commonwealth nations and territories carrying the Queen’s message to the Commonwealth, ahead of next year’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. The Games will take place across the West Midlands from 28 July to 8 August 2022.

The Cyprus Investment Promotion Agency (Invest Cyprus) carried out targeted meetings with businesspeople of the Middle East and the Persian as part of his strategy to promote Cyprus to the markets of the region.

Cyprus President informs EU leaders of recent developments in Cyprus problem

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades has informed European leaders about recent developments in the Cyprus problem and Turkey`s and the Turkish Cypriot side`s illegal actions both at sea and in the Republic of Cyprus` territory, on the sidelines of the EU – Western Balkans Summit, Government Spokesperson Marios Pelekanos has said.

In statements to the media, Pelekanos said that during the Summit on Wednesday the “entire EU`s support in the prospects of Western Balkans was stressed, noting that this is the only way to maintain security, prosperity and lasting peace in Europe,” a presidency press release reads.

“At the same time, it was off course underlined that the commitment of Western Balkan partners to their reform efforts is imperative,” he added.
