FMs of Cyprus and Greece will hold talks on Monday in Athens

The Foreign Ministers of Cyprus and Greece, Nikos Christodoulides and Nikos Dendias, will hold, on Monday, talks in Athens, in the framework of the constant coordination and exchange of information between Nicosia and Athens. Their discussions will focus on developments in the Cyprus problem, the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean, EU-Turkey relations and the recent agreement between Greece and France.

A press release issued by Cyprus Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Christodoulides will fly on Monday morning to Athens for contacts with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece, Nikos Dendias, in the context of the constant coordination and exchange of information between Nicosia and Athens.

Nicosia consents to Colin Stewart’s appointment as the UNSG’s Special Representative in Cyprus

Diplomatic sources have confirmed to the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) that Nicosia has given its consent for the appointment of Canadian Colin Stewart as the new Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Cyprus, as has been reported in the Cypriot press.

According to the sources, the Cypriot government has officially been approached and has given its consent for the appointment of Canadian Colin Stewart, who will replace the UN Secretary General`s Special Representative in Cyprus, Elizabeth Spehar. Previously Stewart served as the UN Secretary-General`s Special Representative for Western Sahara.

Implementation of Green Deal a challenge for Cyprus, says Foreign Minister at the Cyprus Forum

The implementation of the European Green Deal is a challenge for Cyprus, Foreign Minister, Nikos Christodoulides, has said, pointing out that Cyprus is cooperating with countries in the region to mitigate the effects of climate change.

In his speech at the Cyprus Forum, at the panel on “Cyprus and the Mediterranean: New Realities, the Green Agreement, a Connected Mediterranean”, the Foreign Minister said that the central theme of the recent EUMED 9 Summit in Athens was climate change and its effects on the Mediterranean, noting that the need for future coordinated action to address weaknesses was recognized, especially due to the limited connectivity between the Mediterranean and mainland Europe.

Cyprus police issue 36 fines for COVID-19 measures violations

Police in Cyprus fined 25 citizens and 11 establishment owners, during the last 24 hours, in the context of checks regarding the implementation of measures in place to contain the COVID-19 pandemic.

A police press officer told CNAthat 4.708 checks were carried out across Cyprus. Most citizens were handed out a fine because they did not use protective face masks or because they did not have a safepass while visiting public places and other premises.

In Nicosia during 2.839 checks 8 individuals and 5 owners of establishments were fined, in Limassol during 267 checks 12 individuals were fined, in Larnaca during 519 checks 4 persons were fined, in Paphos during 424 checks 6 owners of establishments were fined, in Famagusta during 290 checks 1 individual was fined, while in Morphou the police reported no one during 190 checks that were conducted.

Cyprus announces 83 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday while no new deaths were recorded

Eighty-three new COVID-19 cases were traced on Sunday, Cyprus Health Ministry announced, noting that the total number of confirmed cases is now 120,498. The positivity rate stands at 0.19%.

No deaths of COVID-19 patients were recorded and therefore the total number of people who passed away due to COVID-19 remains 554, of whom 351 are men (63%) and 203 are women (37%). Their median age is 76.4 years old.

Moreover, 68 COVID-19 patients are treated in hospital. The situation of 27 of them is critical, while 60.28% of those hospitalized have not been vaccinated. Out of the 27 patients whose condition is critical 12 are intubated, 2 are treated in Intensive Treatment Units but are not intubated, and 13 in Increased Care Units.

Cypriot Phivos Vakis appointed as first Vice-Chairman of the UEFA Stadium and Security Committee

General Secretary of Cyprus Football Association (CFA), Phivos Vakis, has assumed the position of first Vice-Chairman of the UEFA Stadium and Security Committee.

According to the CFA, Vakis was promoted from second to first Vice-Chairman of the UEFA Stadium and Security Committee, following a decision by the UEFA Executive Committee during a recent meeting in Moldova.

The term of office of all UEFA committees ends in 2023.
