Cyprus trade deficit up by 23% year on year in January – July 2021

Cyprus trade deficit amounted to €3,165.7 million for the period of January to July 2021, marking an increase of 23.3% compared with the respective period of 2020, according to data released by the Statistical Service of Cyprus (Cystat).

Total imports of goods (from EU member states and from third countries) in January – July 2021 amounted to €4,814.6 million compared with €4,327.1 mn in January – July 2020, recording an increase of 11.3%.

Total exports of goods dropped by 6.3% in January – July 2021 to (to EU Member States and to third €1,648.9 mn compared to €1,759.4 mn in the same period of 2020, Cystat added.

The European Union was the main source of supply of goods to Cyprus with a share of €3,160.5 mn corresponding to 66% of total imports, while imports from all other European countries totalled €363.6 mn in January – July 2021.

President Anastasiades to inform European Council on Turkey’s actions, measures against rising energy prices, migration

President Anastasiades will brief his counterparts in the European Council on Turkish actions in Varosha and the Cypriot EEZ, on measures taken in Cyprus to counter rising energy prices, as well as on the migratory pressures experienced by Cyprus due to arrivals through Turkey and the occupied areas, according to a statement by government spokesperson Marios Pelekanos ahead of the Council, which takes place on Thursday and Friday.

The government spokesperson further said that President Anastasiades is expected to brief his counterparts on developments regarding the fenced-off area of Varosha, the harassment of a research vessel in the Cypriot EEZ by a Turkish vessel, the Turkish Cypriot leadership’s decision to grand land to the occupying forces, and a more general update on developments on the Cyprus problem.

Cyprus once again a red zone on ECDC’s epidemiological map

Cyprus has once again passed into the red category on the epidemiological map of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) on the COVID-19 situation, after having been in the orange category for two weeks. The latest version of the map was uploaded on ECDC’s website on Thursday.

The epidemiological situation has improved in Spain, France, Italy and Portugal, where several areas are now in the green, or safe zone, with the rest of the regions in these countries being in the orange zone.
