Police fine 20 citizens and 5 establishments for violations of COVID measures

Police fined 20 citizens and 5 establishment owners for violations of COVID measures, in a total of 2.714 checks the last 24 hours across the island.

A press officer from the Police Press Office told the Cyprus News Agency that in Nicosia the police carried out 1,234 checks during which they fined 6 citizens and 3 establishement owners, in Limassol in 196 checks 4 fines were handed to citizens and in Larnaka the Police made 482 checks and fined one citizen.

Cyprus pediatricians call on parents to vaccinate their kids against COVID

Cyprus Pediatric Society on Tuesday launched a campaign for children vaccination against COVID, calling on parents to inoculate their children over 12 years old, as all scientific data dictate to this end.

Head of the Pediatric Society Dr Michalis Anastasiades speaking during a press conference said that the campaign takes place in order to inform for the necessity of the vaccinations of children over 12 in order to shield the kids and proceed with the biggest inoculation protection for the population.

He said that material is uploaded on the Society`s website as well as on the FB and Youtube channel and advised the public to read it.

Safe pass will be issued only for fully vaccinated persons from October 18

Cyprus’ Health Ministry announced on Tuesday that from October 18 the safe pass will be issued only for fully vaccinated individuals.

According to figures, 81.1% of the adult population has had the 1st dose of he COVID-19 vaccine administered and 78.4% are fully vaccinated and therefore the Ministry has assessed the criteria for a safe pass.

The Ministry said that following checks, approximately 11,000 persons had receive the 1st dose but did not proceed with the 2nd dose of the vaccine, pointing out that scientific data show that the 1st dose does not offer effective protection from the variants of the virus.

It said that it is necessary to change the criteria and therefore following a Cabinet decision, only fully vaccinated people will be able to issue the safe pass (2 doses or one if they had the Janssen vaccine administered).

Cyprus reports one death from COVID and 146 new cases Tuesday, 61 patients in hospitals

Cyprus Health Ministry on Tuesday reported the death of a patient from COVID and 146 new cases bringing total deaths to 556 and cases to 120,761. The positivity rate stands at 0,27%. The Ministry said that 61 patients are in hospitals of whom 25 in serious condition. According to figures, 56.93% of the patients are unvaccinated.

Moreover, the Ministry announced that 11 post-COVID patients who are no longer infectious, are intubated in serious condition in ICUs. The new cases were detected from a total of 53,610 tests (rapid and PCR).

The deceased is a male 75 years old who died on 4 October at the ICU of Limassol General Hospital. Of the 556 deceased 353 are male (63%), and 203 female (37%) and the median age is 76,4 years.

Of the 25 hospitalized in serious condition, 13 are intubated, one is in an ICU and 11 in ACUs.

Lending criteria remain unchanged in 2nd quarter, demand for loans by households increases

Lending criteria to both businesses and households remained unchanged in the second quarter of 2021, but it is expected that they will become stricter in the third quarter of the year, according to the results of the Bank Lending Survey (BLS) for July 2021, published Tuesday by the Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC).

This development, said the CBC, “followed the tightening observed in 2020 in all loan types, as well as during the first quarter of 2021 in loans to households, mainly due to the pandemic and in particular the banks’ increased risk perception.”

Net demand for loans by firms remained unchanged in the second quarter of 2021, while net demand for loans from households increased.

Central Bank reports deterioration of balance of payments, international investment position, external debt in Q2

Cyprus’ balance of payments, international investment position and external debt deteriorated in the 2nd quarter of 2021, provisional data released Tuesday by the Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC) showed.

According to the preliminary balance of payments data for 2021 Q2, the deficit in the current account balance increased from €139,0 million in 2020 Q2, to €648,6 million, in 2021 Q2.

The resulting deficit when adjusting the data to the impact of Special Purpose Entities (SPEs), in other words when classifying SPEs as non-residents, stood at €645,5 million in 2021 Q2, compared with a deficit of €409,6 million in 2020 Q2, said the Central Bank.

The Government invests in the human capital of the country, says President in his speech at 29th Congress of SEK

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades said Tuesday that the Government aims to invest in the country`s human capital and create a modern labor market with well-trained human resources that can effectively respond to the ever-changing conditions and growing challenges and demands of the modern economy, in his speech at the 29th Pancyprian Congress of SEK trade union. The speech was delivered on behalf of the President by the Minister of Finance Constantinos Petrides.

The President said that in the last years the Government has put special emphasis on the protection of workers` rights and the deepening of institutionalized social protection.

Enhancing cooperation between parliaments of small European states imperative, Cyprus House President says

President of the Cyprus House of Representatives Annita Demetriou has said that enhancing cooperation between the parliaments of small EU states is imperative.

Demetriou addressing the works of the 14th Conference of the Presidents of Parliaments of Small European States which concluded on Monday, in Montenegro, also referred to the Cyprus problem and Turkish provocations noting that the Cyprus problem and the efforts to resolve it is a priority for the House of Representatives, a parliament press release says.

Demetriou who was speaking during a debate on parliamentary diplomacy, said that apart from their role in shaping foreign policy, parliaments are real factors of foreign policy since they are flexible and act in a supplementary capacity to traditional diplomacy.

FM Christodoulides discusses Turkish provocations in Cypriot EEZ with EU High Representative

Cyprus’ Foreign Affairs Minister Nikos Christodoulides and the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell held a telephone conversation this morning, according to a post of the Ministry on Twitter.

The two men “discussed the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean following the latest Turkish provocations in the Exclusive Economic Zone of Cyprus”, it said.

Cyprus to submit proposal on migration to the Council of the EU on behalf of Med5

Cyprus will submit to the Council of the EU a proposal containing three measures to deal with migration inflows until the bloc’s 27 member states reach an agreement on a new European Pact on Migration and Asylum.

Cyprus will submit the proposal on behalf of the five Mediterranean countries, that is Cyprus, Malta, Greece, Italy and Spain, Interior Minister Nikos Nouris told the House Committee on Foreign and European Affairs on Tuesday.

Nouris informed the members of the Parliament about the current negotiations to launch a new EU Pact on Migration and Asylum that have been ongoing for more than a year.
