Comprehensive income from betting at 226.3 million in Q4 2021, up by 16% year on year

The betting sector in Cyprus returned to the pre-COVID-19 levels in the fourth quarter of 2021 with a total of €12.9 million diverted to state coffers throughout 2021 from taxes and contributions, according to financial data released by the National Betting Authority (NBA) on Tuesday.

Ministers point out need for quality and resilient tourism in Cyprus

Cypriot Minister of Transport, Communications and Works Yiannis Karousos and Deputy Minister for Tourism Savvas Perdios have pointed out the need for quality tourism which could be resilient amid continued crises.

Addressing a conference organised by the Association of Cyprus Tourist Enterprises STEK on Tuesday, on the next day for Cyprus Tourism, Karousos said quality tourism is attracted through a holistic tourist experience and underlined that “without air connectivity we will not see quality tourism.”

Following a record-year in tourist arrivals in 2019, Cyprus tourism in 2020 recorded one of the worst seasons historically, in the midst of travel restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic, while in 2021 tourist arrivals recovered to approximately half of 2019 levels.

ECDC to provide guidance to Cyprus regarding vaccination strategies for upcoming winter

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) will provide guidance to Cyprus in relation to the development of a vaccination strategy for the country`s population during the next winter season, Minister of Health Michael Hadjipantela and ECDC Director Dr Andrea Ammon agreed during a meeting in Brussels on Tuesday, on the margins of the Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumer Affairs Council meeting.

It was also agreed that the ECDC and the Ministry of Health will develop their cooperation regarding the prevention and treatment of nosocomial infections.

On Wednesday, Hadjipantela is expected to meet with the French Renew MEP Véronique Trillet-Lenoir, who is a member of the parliamentary committees on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) as well as the Special Committee on the COVID-19 pandemic (COVI).

SMEs in Cyprus and EU take environmental sustainability steps, Eurobarometer shows

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the European Union have already undertaken substantive actions to transition their business operations towards environmental sustainability, according to the findings of the 2022 edition of the Eurobarometer on SMEs, resource efficiency and green markets.

Overall, 89% of SMEs in the EU are taking at least one of the actions listed in the survey to become more resource-efficient, for example by using predominantly renewable energy, recycling or minimising waste. 9% said that they had not taken any measures and 2% said they do not know.

Thirteen femicides in Cyprus between 2019 and 2020, study shows

A total of 13 femicides were committed in Cyprus between 2019 and 2020, with the victims in two cases being young girls. Almost all were perpetrated by current or ex-husbands or partners, according to a report, prepared in the framework of the FEM – United project, which was presented on Tuesday by the Mediterranean Institute for Gender Studies (MIGS) and Cyprus University of Technology, during a press conference at Frederick University, in Nicosia.

FEM-United is a two-year EU-funded project with partners from five European countries, including Cyprus, Germany, Malta, Portugal and Spain.

Cypriot volunteer doctors start humanitarian mission in Romania for Ukrainian refugees [VIDEO]

A group of Cypriot doctors and nurses arrived on Tuesday in the Romanian border town of Siret, to volunteer their services for the health care of Ukrainian refugees fleeing their war-torn country.

The group of Volunteer Doctors Cyprus arranged a humanitarian mission in cooperation with Médecins du Monde Greece. Earlier, on Tuesday morning, the group arrived at the northern city of Radau?i, near Siret.

University of Nicosia research shows that emissions cause 238 premature deaths in 2017

Researchers from the University of Nicosia found out that 238 people lost their lives in 2017 due to emissions released by vehicles and heat sources and came to the conclusion that reducing atmospheric pollutants can save human lives.

According to a press release by the University of Cyprus forty-five and twenty-four percent of anthropogenic nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM2.5) emissions originate from vehicles and combustion sources, respectively.

Cyprus is present in the international film industry, the artistic directors of the 20th Cyprus Film Days International Festival told the Cyprus News Agency. As the official competition festival of Cyprus dedicated to the art of the full-length fiction film, the festival is organized by the Cultural Services of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth of the Republic of Cyprus and the Rialto Theatre. It is hosted in Nicosia and Limassol from April 8th until April 16th.

The police booked 24 individuals and businesses for violations of measures against the further spread of COVID-19, the Cyprus Police told CNA today.

According to the police, within the last 24 hours, until Tuesday morning, 1518 checks were carried out throughout Cyprus and one shop owner and 23 individuals were booked.

In Nicosia, 438 checks were carried out and five individuals and one shop owner were fined.
