Colonel James Phillips made first Wales Veterans’ Commissioner

The Office for Veterans Affairs and the Office of the Secretary of State for Wales have jointly appointed Colonel James Phillips as Veterans’ Commissioner for Wales. Welsh Secretary Simon Hart said he was delighted that James Phillips had been appointed to the role, which will build on the success of counterpart roles in Scotland and Northern Ireland and will mean that all devolved nations have a Veterans’ Commissioner. NYSE, Nasdaq halt trading in stocks of Russia-based companies

Police fines 16 people and 7 shop owners in violation of COVID-19 measures

Cyprus Police fined 16 individuals and 7 shop owners for violating protective measures aiming to contain the spread of COVID-19.

A police spokesperson told CNA that in the last 24 hours ending on 06:00 local time Tuesday, the Force carried out a total of 1,583 checks throughout the government-controlled areas.

All businesses booked are located in Nicosia and concerned the non-usage of a protective mask from managers and employers.

House President highlights Cultural Heritage Committee’s contribution in monuments’ conservation

House of Representatives President Annita Demetriou has highlighted the contribution of the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage in the efforts to conserve, preserve and showcase Cyprus` monuments.

Demetriou received on Monday the Greek Cypriot co-chair and members of the Committee Sotos Ktoris, Ioannis Karis, Alecos Tringides, Katerina Frangoulidou and Natalie Neophytou, a Parliament press release says.

“The President of the House of Representatives praised the Technical Committee`s contribution in the efforts to conserve, preserve and showcase out country`s cultural heritage monuments,” it notes.

New Novavax vaccine received, Health Ministry official tells CNA

Cyprus received the new Novavax protein vaccine on Tuesday, Dr Elena Panagiotopoulou, Deputy Director of Pharmaceutical Services of Cyprus` Health Ministry told the Cyprus News Agency, adding that vaccinations will begin in the next few days.

Panagiotopoulou said that Cyprus received 15 thousand doses of the Nuvaxovid vaccine. She also said that the Health Ministry will announce tomorrow when exactly the vaccinations will begin as well as when the vaccine will be available at vaccination centres.

Cyprus wants progress in research for rare diseases and solutions for orphan drugs, says Health Minister

Cyprus wants progress in research on rare diseases and solutions for a common market and supply of orphan drugs, said Health Minister Michalis Hadjipantela, in his intervention on Monday at a High Level meeting entitled “Care and innovation pathways for a European rare diseases policy ”in Paris, organised under the aegis of the EU French presidency.

The participating Health Ministers spoke about recent developments in Ukraine and agreed to discuss ways to help those affected at next week`s Council.

According to a press release from the Ministry, Hadjipantela referred to Cyprus` national policy in the field of rare diseases, saying that our country manages all initiatives related to rare diseases as an important asset and tool, and hopes for continuous development in this field.

Cypriot and Saudi Arabian Ministers of Commerce discuss further strengthening of bilateral relations

Natasa Pilides, Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry had a meeting with the Saudi Arabian Minister of Commerce, Majid bin Abdullah Al Qasabi, at Riyadh on Tuesday, within the framework of the official visit of Cyprus President, Nicos Anastasiades, to the capital of Saudi Arabia.

According to an announcement issued by the Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry, during their meeting, the Ministers discussed ways to further enchase the two countries’ cooperation in a wide scope of sectors, such as tourism and especially conference tourism, investments in hotel units and investment funds, collaboration on financial services, education, exchange of know-how on new technologies regarding renewable energy sources, aquaculture, health etc.

Both Ministers stressed the need to set goals and priorities as regards bilateral cooperation, through the organisation

Increased security during Israeli President’s official visit to Cyprus

Increased security measures will be in place on Wednesday in Cyprus during an official visit by Israel`s President Isaac Herzog.

The police have said in a press release that from 10:00 to 16:00 hours local time on Wednesday traffic will be disrupted for a few minutes in a number of streets in Larnaca district, in Larnaca to Nicosia motorway and in Nicosia district.

The public is being asked to follow the directions of the officers on duty.

Cyprus’ Deputy Ministry of Innovation presents its work on the Gov.cy platform, for public digital services

The initiative of Cyprus’ Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, to upgrade public digital services through the creation of the Digital Services Factory (DSF) in collaboration with the United Kingdom’s Government Digital Service (GDS), was presented on Tuesday at the conference “The Digital Services Factory Way: Faster, Smarter, Simpler digital services”, in Nicosia.

The project, within the framework of the “Digital Cyprus” programme, aims to create a digital platform based on the British Gov.uk, where citizens will be able to access all public services, with ease and security.
