Cyprus Health Minister to propose the extension of the test to stay scheme for teachers

Cyprus Health Minister, Michalis Hadjipantela, will submit a proposal to the Cabinet for the extension of the test to stay scheme for teachers as well.

The Minister announced his intentions after a meeting on Tuesday afternoon with educational associations, during which he was informed about problems associated with the test to stay and the 72-hour rapid test in high schools.

“Our intention”, he said, “is to propose to the Cabinet on Wednesday the extension of the test to stay scheme for teachers and if the proposal is approved, it will be put in effect as of Monday.

There is a red line in which we will step into if the war in Ukraine goes on, Slovenian President says

We would like to show to Russia that there are some limits and that these limits have been already crossed, Slovenian President Borut Pahor, said on Tuesday, adding that “there is a red line in which we will step into if the war (in Ukraine) goes on.”

Speaking at an event organized by Cyprus University of Technology in Limassol, on the future of Europe, Pahor said that “the west, the EU and NATO, of which Slovenia is a member, are united more than ever.”

“It is our common obligation and as politicians it is our profound responsibility to find as soon as possible some sort of peaceful solution to the crisis.

The European Commission asks MEPs for help for further support measures for refugees from Ukraine

The European Commission on Tuesday called on the European Parliament to help amend some regulations to be able to implement its recent decision on monetary aid to Member States to be able to help and integrate refugees from Ukraine.

During the debate at the EP on the deterioration of the situation of refugees as a consequence of Russian aggression against Ukraine, European Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ylva Johansson, briefed the MEPs of the Commission’s “unprecedented” proposal to give more flexibility to Member States to use €420m from the Home Affair Funds, which is unspent money from the previous Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF), allowing thus the states one more year to spend allocated funds. This, she said, offered flexibility to switch priorities so that Member States can commit more money to integration and support people fleeing the war in Ukraine.

Cyprus President flies to Paris for informal European Council meeting

Cyprus President, Nicos Anastasiades, flies on Wednesday to Paris, where he will attend in Versailles, on March 10 and 11, the informal European Council meeting.

A press release issued by the Presidency said that during the first day of the meeting, participants will discuss issues regarding the EU Strategic Autonomy in the fields of defence and energy, in view of the new security environment given the ongoing war in Ukraine.

A dinner of the European Council members will follow to discuss the general situation in Ukraine.

Cyprus FM sends letter to Borrell asking for explanations about Turkey’s role in war in Ukraine

Cyprus Foreign Minister, Ioannis Kasoulides, is sending a letter to the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, asking for explanations as regards Turkey`s role in the war in Ukraine.

At the same time Kasoulides will ask the EU to undertake its responsibilities as regards Turkey and the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus, since the Republic of Cyprus does not control the airspace over the occupied areas and therefore cannot implement there its decision to close the airspace of the country to Russian aircrafts.

Cyprus records five deaths and 3,695 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday

Cyprus Health Ministry announced on Tuesday that five more patients have died of COVID-19, while 3,695 new coronavirus cases have been recorded out of 133,874 tests. The positivity rate stands at 2.76%.

The total number of deaths is now 883 and the number of confirmed cases 338,517. A total of 120 COVID-19 patients are being treated in hospitals of whom 23 in a critical condition (9 intubated in an Intensive Treatment Unit and one in an Intensive Treatment Unit but not intubated, and 13 in an Increased Care Unit).

All five patients who have died are women. A 78 year old died on March 4, an 87 year old on March 7 and an 84 year old, an 85 year old and an 86 year old passed away on March 8.

The percentage of COVID-19 patients who are hospitalized and have not been vaccinated is 53.34%.

Cyprus Government will buy 36,000 tons of barley and corn, said the Minister of Agriculture

The Government of Cyprus will buy two cargos of a total of 36,000 tons of barley and corn, to ease the shortage in the local market, Agriculture Minister, Costas Cadis told the Agriculture Committee of the House of Representatives.

He said that this is his proposal to the Cabinet and added that this is precautionary measure, aiming to safeguard the country’s sufficiency. The cost is estimated at €12.
