UNSG’s Special Representative hosts roundable with World Bank on economic opportunities in Cyprus

UN Secretary General`s Special Representative and head of the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) Colin Stewart hosted, on Tuesday, a joint roundtable with a World Bank delegation on economic opportunities in Cyprus, UN in Cyprus said on its Twitter account.

It also noted that today there is more than ever the need to expand economic cooperation and promote intra-island interactions.

Big annual growth of 15.2% in Wholesale Trade and 10.8% in Vehicles in 2021

The Turnover Value Index of Wholesale Trade recorded a remarkable increase of 15.2% for 2021, compared to the corresponding period of the previous year, according to Cyprus Statistical Service .

Also, the Turnover Value Index of Sales and Repair of Motor Vehicles recorded an important increase of 10.8% as well, in comparison to 2020.

Moreover, during the fourth quarter of 2021, the Turnover Value Index of Wholesale Trade (Division 46) recorded an increase of 22.5% compared to compared to the corresponding quarter of 2020.

For the same quarter, the Turnover Value Index of Sales and Repair of Motor Vehicles (Division 45) recorded an increase of 2.3% compared to the corresponding quarter of the previous year.

RCB sells a €556-million loan portfolio to Hellenic Bank, boosts liquidity

RCB Bank Limited, Cyprus third largest lender, announced it has entered into an agreement with Hellenic Bank Public Company Ltd for the sale of a performing loan portfolio of up to €556 million, related funds on the accounts of the corresponding borrowers and related off-balance sheet obligations.

The agreement came as the Bank announced on 24 February that a 46.29% stake held by Russian VTB Bank in the bank was acquired by the other current, Cypriot shareholders of the bank.

EU Agriculture Ministers discussed measures to support agriculture and food security in Europe

The EU’s Ministers for Agriculture discussed the current situation in the agricultural market as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, during the Agriculture and Fisheries Council which was held in Brussels on Monday.

Representing Cyprus, the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Costas Kadis, informed his fellow Ministers about the difficulties faced by the country with regard to the supply of food and raw materials due to its geographical location, making particular reference to the unfavourable conditions faced by livestock farmers.

As noted in a statement by the Ministry of Agriculture, the views and suggestions submitted during the meeting will be discussed on the working group level.

Cannabis use rises and cocaine use falls in Cyprus, surveys show

The use of cannabis in Cyprus has increased while the use of cocaine has fallen, according to a survey conducted in the country recently, it was announced during the presentation of the annual report of the Cyprus National Addictions Authority (CNAA) for 2021, which took place on Tuesday in Nicosia.

Some of the actions taken by the CNAA during 2021 include the European programme “Justice PRS20“, participation in the European programme “Joint Action on Tobacco Control 2 (JATC 2)“, the protocol for referral of students in therapy programmes, as well as the protocol for tracing, referring and treating pregnant and breastfeeding mothers who make use of alcohol or other illicit substances. Defence Minister informed Foreign Affairs Council about humanitarian aid sent by Cyprus to Ukraine

Defence Minister Charalambos Petrides participated in a discussion on the EU`s Strategic Compass, as well as on the latest developments on the ground in Ukraine, during a joint meeting of EU Foreign and Defence Ministers in the framework of the Foreign Affairs Council which was held on Monday in Brussels.

Petrides underlined in a statement after the meeting that “once again we unequivocally condemned the Russian invasion and expressed our support for the unity, independence, territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine.”

“In this context, I informed my partners about the dispatch already on behalf of Cyprus of the first humanitarian aid package of €1 million,” he added.

Book by poet Giorgos Christodoulides to be presented in London as part of the London Book Fair 2022

Cypriot poet Giorgos Christodoulides poetry collection entitled ““Giorgos Christodoulides: Selected Poems (1996-2021)”, will be presented in London in the context of the London Book Fair 2022.

The book, translated from Greek by translator Despina Pirketti who has written the Introduction, will be launched during an event organised by the Cyprus High Commission, at the Cyprus House in London on Tuesday 5 April at 1830.

The launch takes place in the context of the London Book Fair 2022 and will include a talk about Christodoulides’s poetry by Michael Paraskos, Senior Teaching Fellow in the Centre for Languages, Culture and Communication at Imperial College London, followed by brief interventions by the book’s translator, Despina Pirketti, and the author, Giorgos Christodoulides.

Omicron variant, weather conditions and people’s fatigue among the reasons for outbreak in COVID cases, expert tells CNA

The Omicron sub-variant, weather conditions and growing among the people are some of the reasons explaining the current epidemiological outlook, as daily COVID cases exceed now 5,000 people, says the member of the Advisory Scientific Committee, Lecturer in Paediatrics at the European University of Cyprus, Dr. Zoe-Dorothea Pana.

Speaking to CNA, Dr. Pana stated that the outbreak of cases is a phenomenon observed not just in Cyprus, but there is a general concern across Europe.

She noted that due to the predominance of the Omicron sub-variant, which is super transmissible, the dispersion in the community has increased.

Police issue 18 fines for violations of COVID-19 measures

Police have fined 16 individuals and two establishment owners or managers in the last 24 hours after 1,568 checks for violation of COVID-19 measures.

A Police spokesperson told CNA that two people and one shop owner were fined in Nicosia after 387 checks, in Limassol one individual after 148 checks while in Larnaca two citizens and one establishment owner were fined after 387 checks.

In Famagusta seven individuals were fined after 490 checks.
