Tourist arrivals reach 71,921 in February

The number of tourist arrivals in February 2022 was 71,921, a 32% decrease compared to February 2020, before the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in Cyprus, data released by the Cyprus Statistical Service show on Wednesday.

For the period January – February 2022, tourist arrivals amounted to 115,865, compared to 8,936 in the corresponding period of 2021 and 191,214 in the period January – February 2020. Compared to the first two months of 2020, tourist arrivals recorded a 39.

Cyprus in first place in EU in first time asylum applications per million inhabitants

Cyprus had the highest number of registered first-time asylum applicants per million residents in 2021, according to the latest data released by Eurostat, the EU’s statistical service.

A total of 14,799 new asylum applications were registered per million inhabitants in Cyprus in 2021, ahead of Austria (4,111) and Slovenia (2,474).

The lowest numbers were recorded in Hungary (only four first-time applicants per million population), followed by Estonia (57) and Slovakia (60).

Trade deficit increased to €5.24 bn in 2021, imports from EU reached €5.51 bn.

Despite a greater percentage increase in exports compared to imports, the trade deficit increased in 2021 by €349 million compared to 2020, reaching €5.24 billion, with the European Union being the main source of supply of goods to Cyprus with €5.51 billion of total imports.

According to the Cyprus Statistical Service, the trade deficit amounted to €5,244.5 million for the period January – December 2021, compared to €4,895.5 million in the corresponding period of 2020.

In particular, total imports of goods (from EU Member States and third countries) for the period January – December 2021 were €8,531.2 million, compared to €7,642.1 million for the period January – December 2020, an increase of 11.6%.

No double standards vis-à-vis violations and atrocities, House President tells EU Ambassadors

Cyprus House President, Annita Demetriou, had a meeting on Wednesday with EU member states Ambassadors in Cyprus, during which they discussed about the coordination among EU member states to address the repercussions of the war in Ukraine.

In statements to CNA after the meeting, Demetriou underlined that “we believe in diplomacy and peace”, adding that “war and the use of force can never be the answer. We, as the Republic of Cyprus, understand better what is going on, and this is why we are among those leading efforts on these issues, and at the same time we have underlined that there must be no double standards in such cases,” she added.

Cyprus on Wednesday records 4 deaths, 4,704 new COVID-19 cases, while 153 patients are in hospital

Four deaths and 4,704 new COVID-19 cases were announced by Cyprus` Health Ministry on Wednesday.

The deaths concern one man, aged 70, who died on Wednesday and three women, aged 72, 89 and 86. The 72-year-old woman died on Wednesday, the 89-year-old on Monday and the 86-year-old on Sunday. This brings the total number of people who died from COVID-19 so far to 922.

There are 153 patients with COVID-19 in hospital, of whom 23 in serious condition: seven are intubated while 16 are being treated in high-dependency units. According to the Health Ministry, 52.32% of hospitalised patients are not vaccinated. Another 21 patients who are no longer infectuous, are still intubated, in intensive care units.
