EastMed pipeline not a one-way street says Cypriot Energy Minister

EastMed pipeline is not a one-way street, said Cypriot Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry Natasa Pilides replying to a question on the role of Cyprus in Europe’s energy supply and the possibility of the construction of EastMed pipeline that will connect gas fields in the Eastern Mediterranean to Europe.

Speaking in a panel discussion on the sidelines of the exhibition “Save Energy”, organized by Cyprus Employers and Industrialists Federation, Pilides said that the goal was to make the best use of Cyprus’ deposits in the most economically feasible and efficient way, pointing out that a good solution for Cyprus deposits was the LNG facilities in Egypt, something which was currently under discussion for Cyprus’ gas deposit “Aphrodite”.

Construction Materials prices continued rising in February

Cyprus Price Index of Construction Materials continued its upward trend in February reflecting the increased cost incurred by contractors

According to data released by the Statistical Service of Cyprus (Cystat), the Index in Materials for February 2022 reached 122,92 units (base year 2015=100), recording an increase of 1,44% compared to the previous month and an increase of 17.39% compared with the respective period of last year.

By main commodity category, increases were recorded in metallic products 27.

Cyprus hourly labour cost rose by 1.6% in Q4 2021

Cyprus hourly labour costs (total cost) decelerated in the fourth quarter of 2021 marking an increase of 1.6% year on year following an annual rise of 7.8% in the previous quarter.

According to provisional data released on Friday by Cystat, the two main components of labour costs, wages and salaries per hour worked and non-wage costs per hour worked increased by 1.7% and 0.9% respectively, compared with the same quarter of the previous year.

In the 3rd quarter of 2021, the annual changes were 4,3% for the wages and salaries per hour worked and 26,0% for the non-wage cost per hour worked.

In seasonally adjusted terms, the hourly labour cost (total cost) decreased by 0.1% compared to the previous quarter.

Cyprus produced 543,000 tons of solid waste in 2020, 462,000 tons were managed of which 18.3% was recycled

March 18 marks World Recycling Day set to raise awareness on the important role of recycling and reuse which are the key to convert waste into resources for a circular economy.

In Cyprus in 2020, according to figures by CyStat, the total amount of municipal solid waste produced amounted to 543,000 tons, compared to 571,000 in 2019, recording a decrease of 4.9%.

Of the 462,000 tons managed in 2020, 78.8% was disposed in landfills, 18.3% was recycled, 1.2% was used for compost purposes and 1.7% was used for energy recovery.

According to data from Green Dot, in 2021 12,514 tons of PMD, 9,889 tons of paper and 5,963 tons of glass were recycled, a total of 29,727 tons. In 2020, a total of 27,319 tons of waste were recycled.

Cyprus hosts an OSCE PA conference on fighting corruption in May

Cyprus will host a conference of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE PA) on May 27th and 28th, 2022. The topic of the conference, which will take place at the Filoxenia Conference Centre, is “Fighting corruption, defending democracy: The role of national parliaments” and addresses the 57 parliaments of the OSCE state members and allies in the Mediterranean and Asia.

This was announced during a press conference held by the President of the House of Representatives, Annita Demetriou and MP Irene Charalambides, Vice-President of the OSCE PA and Special Representative on Fighting Corruption, at the Filoxenia Conference Centre on Friday.

Cyprus Minister of Interior met with Ukrainian Ambassador to discuss refugees issues

Cyprus Minister of Interior, Nicos Nouris, met with Ukrainian Ambassador Ruslan Nimchynskyi today, to discuss issues regarding the arrival of Ukrainian refuges in Cyprus.

The meeting took place in the Office of the Minister of Interior. Practical issues were discussed, as well as the necessary assistance for people arriving without documents and the need to determine the exact number of Ukrainian refuges in Cyprus.

Cyprus reports 3,859 new COVID-19 cases, no deaths, 114 patients in hospitals

Cypriot health authorities announced on Friday 3,859 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total tally of infections to 370,311, while total deaths remained at 910 as no fatalities were announce today.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Health, hospitalizations amounted to 114 from 113 yesterday, while patients treated in serious condition in Intensive Treatment Units and Increased Care Units decreased to 20 from 22 the day before.

A total of 99,636 tests were carried out on Friday, with the overall daily positivity rate declining to 3.
