Russian and Cypriots clinch medals in Limassol marathon 2022

Russian Egor Vinogradov clinched the gold medal in the 42km Marathon Race of the OPAP Limassol Marathon GSO on Sunday.

Two Cypriots secured the silver and bronze medals.

Vinogradov came first with a time of 02:30:36, followed by George Harakis (02:33:11) and Constantinos Timinis (02:36:54), who also finished first and second at the Pancyprian Amateur Athletic Association of Cyprus (KOEAS) championship.

DISY President officially his party’s candidate for 2023 presidential elections

The Supreme Council of ruling party Democratic Rally (DISY) unanimously ratified the candidacy of the party’s president Averof Neofytou for the Presidency of the Republic. As the party’s Director George Lysandrides said, there was no other candidacy submitted. The Council members verified Neofytou’s candidacy by a show of hands.

Neofytou accepted the ratification of his bid to run for President recalling DISY founder and former President Glafkos Clerides’ slogan: “United, United, United, never Defeated”.

Addressing the event, Cyprus President and former DISY President Nicos Anastasiades spoke of historic, responsible decisions, which will determine the stability of the country.

“Today is a historic day, because the party unanimously decides that my successor will be my close partner,” he noted.

Police issue 22 fines in total for violations of COVID-19 measures

Police have fined 14 individuals and eight establishment owners or managers in the last 24 hours after 2,756 checks for violation of COVID-19 measures.

A Police spokesperson told CNA that six people were fined in Nicosia after 872 checks, in Limassol one individual after 277 checks while in Larnaca two citizens and two establishment owners were fined after 550 checks.

In Pafos six establishment owners were fined after 212 checks and another three individuals after 537 checks in Famagusta.

Foreign Minister Kasoulides to attend EU Foreign Affairs Council

Minister of Foreign Affairs Ioannis Kasoulides travels to Brussels on Sunday for the Foreign Affairs Council that will be held on Monday to discuss Russian aggression against Ukraine.

A Foreign Ministry press release said that on Monday morning, Kasoulides will take part in an informal breakfast hosted by Greek Foreign Affairs Minister Nikos Dendias and attended by their counterpart from North Macedonia, Bujar Osmani.

He will then take part in the Foreign Affairs Council deliberations which will examine the Russian aggression against Ukraine and hold an informal exchange with Nicu Popescu, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and European Integration of the Republic of Moldova.

Cyprus reports 3 deaths from COVID-19, 3,698 new cases, 143 are in hospital on Sunday

Authorities in Cyprus reported three deaths from COVID-19 and 3,698 new cases on Sunday while 143 people with the disease are in hospital, 25 of whom in a serious condition. The positivity rate is 4.9%.

In a press release the Ministry of Health said that the total number of deaths has reached 914 and of cases 377,356.

The three deceased were two men 81 and 72 years of age and a 101 year-old woman. They all passed away on Sunday.

At the same time 143 patients with COVID-19 are being treated in state hospitals, 25 of whom in a serious condition; 8 are intubated in an ICU and 17 are being treated in a high dependency unit.

The percentage of COVID patients who are unvaccinated 58.05%.

Twenty four patients who are no longer infectious continue to be treated intubated in an ICU.
