Number of Ukraine war refugees soars to 2.5 million, UN says

The number of people who have fled Ukraine since the start of Russia’s invasion has exceeded 2.5 million, the UN Refugee Agency said on Friday. According to the UN data, more than 1.5 million people had fled Ukraine to Poland, some 225,000 to Hungary, 176,000 to Slovakia and 282,000 to other European countries. Cyprus reports 6 deaths on Friday and 3,020 new COVID cases, 107 patients in hospitals

Cyprus Health Ministry announced on Friday that 6 patients passed away due to COVID and 3,020 new cases were diagnosed. The positivity rate stands at 3.26%. Total deaths rose to 895 and cases to 347,876. The Ministry said that 113 people are hospitalised, of whom 22 in serious condition.

The deceased are 6 women, a 88-year-old who died on 2 January, a 29- year-old who passed away on 8 March, a 84-year-old and a 83-year-old who died yesterday, as well as a 93-year-old and a 82-year-old who passed away today.

Of the 21 patients in serious condition, 7 are intubated in an ICU and 14 in an ACU.

Figures show that 52.34% of the patients are unvaccinated. Moreover 20 patients who are no longer infectious, are intubated in an ICU.

Today a total of 92,720 tests were carried out of which 4,121 were PCR tests and 339 cases were diagnosed

Seven persons and one shop owner reported over violations of Covid-19 protective measures

Cyprus Police fined 7 individuals and 1 shop owner for violating protective measures aiming to contain the spread of COVID-19.

A police spokesperson told CNA that in the last 24 hours ending on 06:00 local time Friday, the Force carried out 1,647 checks throughout the government-controlled areas.

In Nicosia, the Police carried out 497 checks reporting 3 persons and 1 shop owner, in Limassol 123 checks were carried out, reporting 2 individuals, in Larnaca 1 individual was fined following 315 checks, in Pafos no fines were issued after 41 checks, in Famagusta 1 person was reported following 360 checks.

Revenue from tourism at €1.51 billion in 2021

Revenue from tourism amounted to €1.51 billion in 2021 as the Cypriot tourist industry followed a recovery path following the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

According to data released by the Statistical Service of Cyprus (Cystat), revenue from tourism in 2021 amounted to €1,513.6 million, compared with just €392 million in the respective period of 2020 and €2,683 million in 2019, a record-year for the Cypriot tourism industry.

Tourist revenue for the period of January – December 2021 jumped by 286% compared with the respective period of last year, marking a reduction of 43.6% compared with the revenue of 2019.

However, the annual change in tourism revenue in 2021 compared with 2019 was lower that the corresponding rate of tourist arrivals which amounted to 51.3%.

In December tourism revenue amounted to €54 million compared to €9.

Issue of Ukraine, investments and growth on the agenda of informal European Council on Friday

The issue of Ukraine, investments and growth, in the wake of the events in Ukraine, are among the issues discussed during the second day of the informal European Council, taking place in Versailles, in which Cyprus President, Nicos Anastasiades, participates.

According to a press release issued by the Presidency, Anastasiades went in the morning to the Palace of Versailles, where the informal meeting is taking place for a second day.

After the morning session a working lunch will take place, and the meeting is expected to conclude in the afternoon.

Cypriot President attends event on Remembrance Day of the Victims of Terrorism in Versailles

Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades, attended on Friday an event organised by the French President Emmanuel Macron for the 18th Remembrance Day of the Victims of Terrorism, on March 11.

“Honored to attend the event organised by Emmanuel Macron at Grand Trianon to mark the 18th European Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Terrorism,” said the President in a post on Twitter.

The President is taking part in the informal summit of the 27 EU leaders in Versailles convened by the French President, which focuses on the Russian invasion in Ukraine and its consequences.

The effect of Russian invasion of Ukraine on energy prices discussed in Versailles, Government Spokesperson says

The EU’s response to the side effects of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on supply chains and on energy prices were some of the issues that were at the forefront of the second day of the informal summit of the European Council in Versailles, Government Spokesperson Marios Pelekanos said.

The 27 aim to collectively handle challenges brought about by recent developments, in order to ensure that the consequences for European citizens are kept to a minimum, he noted in statements according to a presidency press release.

Pelekanos also said that the discussion during the second day of the summit “focused on the strengthening of the resilience and competitiveness of Europe’s economy.

UNSG’s Special Representative holds meetings with Ambassadors of France and Italy

The UN Secretary-General`s Special Representative in Cyprus and head of the UN peacekeeping mission (UNFICYP), Colin Stewart, had separate meetings on Friday with the Ambassadors of France and Italy to the island, Salina Grenet-Catalano and Federica Ferrari Bravo, respectively.

According to posts of the UN Cyprus on Twitter, Stewart welcomed the French Ambassador for a briefing on the UN mission in Cyprus and the latest developments on the Cyprus problem.

Moreover, he welcomed the Italian Ambassador for a briefing on the UN’s efforts to promote peace across the island.

Cyprus Foreign Minister and French Ambassador discuss issue of Ukraine, Cyprus problem and bilateral cooperation

Cyprus Foreign Minister, Ioannis Kasoulides, and French Ambassador to Cyprus Salina Grenet-Catalano, discussed on Friday about the invasion of Russia to Ukraine, the Cyprus problem and the bilateral cooperation between Cyprus and France.

Genet-Catalano said in a post on Twitter that during their meeting they had an in depth discussion for the EU resolve and unity facing the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the implementation of sanctions, ways to lift the deadlock in the Cyprus problem through CBMs and bilateral cooperation in various fields.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory.

The international community must work for a ceasefire agreement in Ukraine, Cyprus President tells EU counterparts

Cyprus President, Nicos Anastasiades, has said that, as a victim of a foreign invasion and of ongoing occupation of part of its territory, while being under the constant threat of Turkey Cyprus fully understands the dreadful situation which Ukraine and its people face.

In an intervention during the dinner of the EU heads of state on Thursday evening, in the framework of the informal European Council meeting, in Versailles, Anastasiades also underlined that it is crucial for the international community to work with a view to secure, the soonest possible, a ceasefire agreement that will stop the bloodshed and open the way for negotiations, while he also noted the fact that Turkey, a candidate country for EU membership, refuses to abide by the sanctions against Russia.
