Cyprus reports 2 deaths and 2,356 new cases on Monday, 150 patients in hospitals

Cyprus’ Health Ministry announced on Monday 2 deaths, 2,356 new cases and 150 hospitalisations. Total deaths rose to 856 and cases to 322,516. The positivity rate stands at 1.84%.

The deceased are a male 67 years old who passed away yesterday and a female 80 years of age who died today.

The Ministry announced that 37 patients are in serious condition of whom 15 are in an ICU and 22 in an ACU. Figures show that 60% of the patients are unvaccinated. Moreover, 20 patients who are no longer infectious are intubated in an ICU.

Today`s cases were detected from a total of 128,114 tests of which 9,513 were PCR and 358 cases were diagnosed (positivity rate PR 3.76%).

The total number of rapid tests were 118,601 and 1,998 cases were detected (PR 1.68%).

Doxa and PAEEK draw at the completion of the football league’s first phase

Doxa Katokopias won on Sunday 27 February the match against PAEEK with 1-0 at Makarios stadium for the 22nd and last day of the first phase of the Cyta football championship.

Diaz scored the goal for the team from Katokopia in the 16th minute. With this victory, Doxa finished the first phase of the league in the 10th place with 22 points, leaving PAEEK in 11th place with 15 points.

?otal petroleum products sales up by 25.8% in January

In January 2022, the total sales of petroleum products recorded a 25.8% increase compared to January 2021, amounting to 112,423 tonnes. On the other hand, compared to December of 2021, they recorded a drop of over 13%.

In particular, according to the Statistical Service of Cyprus, an increase was observed in the provisions of aviation kerosene (216.5%) and marine gasoil (46.2%), as well as in the sales of kerosene (34.7%), heating gasoil (34.1%), liquefied petroleum gases (28.6%), motor gasoline (27.4%), light fuel oil (16.3%) and road diesel (5.1%).

On the contrary, a decrease was recorded in the sales of asphalt (36.8%) and heavy fuel oil (35.8%). Sales from petrol stations registered an increase of 21.4% to 54,682 tonnes.

General Government deficit drops to €409.1 mn in 2021 due to 16% revenue increase

Due to a significant increase of 16% in revenue the General Government’s deficit shrank to €409.1 mn or 1.8% of GDP in 2021 compared to €1,212.8 mn (5.6% of GDP), preliminary fiscal results published by the Statistical Service of Cyprus (CyStat) on Monday show.

During the period of January- December 2021, total expenditure increased by €560 mn (5.8%) and amounted to €10.284.3 mn, compared to €9,724.3 mn in the corresponding period of 2020.

As noted by CyStat, the increase in specific expenditure categories is due to the support measures taken to address the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

In particular, social benefits increased by €270.6 mn (7.5%) and amounted to €3,862.7 mn, compared to €3,592.1 mn in 2020.

Police report 23 persons and 5 shop owners over violations of COVID-19 protective measures

Cyprus Police fined 23 individuals and 5 shop owners for violating protective measures aiming to contain the spread of COVID-19.

A police spokesperson told CNA that in the last 24 hours ending on 06:00 local time Monday, the Force carried out a total of 2,143 checks throughout the government-controlled areas.

In Nicosia, the Police carried out 519 checks reporting 2 persons, in Limassol 166 checks were carried out with 2 persons fined, in Larnaca 1 shop owner and 4 persons were fined following 459 checks, in Pafos 2 person and 3 shop owners were fined after 151 checks, in Famagusta 13 persons were fined following 557 checks, while in the Morphou region no fines were issued following 1446 checks.

New Action Plan for the operation of airports in effect from 1/3

The new Action Plan for the smooth operation of flights and the operation of airports comes into effect from Tuesday, 1st March, according to a Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works press release on Monday.

From Tuesday, the categorisation of countries, based on the epidemiological risk assessment, shall be modified and shall include three categories with the following colour code: Green, Red and Grey Category. It is clarified that, according to the new Action Plan, the Green and Orange Categories of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) correspond to the Green Category of the Republic of Cyprus, while the Red and Deep Red Categories correspond to the Red Category of the Republic of Cyprus.

Cyprus is working to offset impact from closing its airspace to Russia, Transport Minister says

The Ministry of Transport and the Deputy Ministry for Tourism are striving to offset the impact of the airport traffic from Russia, after Cyprus along with the other EU member-states have closed their air space to Russian aircraft, following the crisis in Ukraine, Minister of Transport Yiannis Karousos has told CNA, expressing the hope that these efforts will bear fruit.

Speaking to CNA, Karousos said Cyprus estimated air traffic to and from Russia in the region of 1.3 million this year, which could amount to 15% of Cyprus total air traffic.

Cypriot state covers PCR tests cost for Ukrainians arriving to airports

The Cypriot state will cover the cost of the PCR tests for Ukrainian citizens arriving to Larnaka and Pafos airports, according to instructions given by Cyprus President, Nicos Anastasiades.

A press release issued by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works said that in the framework of the reception of Ukrainian refugees to the Republic of Cyprus, the cost of the PCR tests carried out upon arrival to Larnaka and Pafos airports, will be covered by the Republic of Cyprus for the citizens arriving from Ukraine, according to instructions given by the President of Cyprus.

Cyprus airspace closed to Russian aircraft, with reservations, from midnight Sunday, Minister says

Minister for Transport Yiannis Karousos announced on Twitter that Cyprus will be closing its airspace to Russian aircraft, after the decision taken by the EU’s Foreign Ministers on Sunday afternoon.

“A NOTAM was issued which goes in effect at midnight, implementing the closing of airspace to Russian aircraft in accordance with the EU’s decision” Karousos tweeted late at night on Sunday.

“Earlier, we gave our consent, with reservations, on closing the European air space” to Russian aircraft, Karousos added.

Defence Minister tells EU counterparts of Cyprus’ readiness to send humanitarian aid to Ukraine

Defence Minister Charalambos Petrides expressed the readiness of Cyprus to provide humanitarian aid to Ukraine, while also expressing the country’s support to the decision to fund the purchase of military equipment for the Ukrainian army through the European Peace Facility, a Defence Ministry press release has said regarding his participation in Monday’s teleconference of the EU’s Defence Ministers.

The Ministers exchanged views on existing capabilities to contribute military equipment to the Ukrainian army.

Petrides condemned the Russian invasion and “expressed his support and solidarity for the Ukrainian people, as well as his sadness for the humanitarian crisis.
