CySEC participates in Global Money Week

The Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC) issued on Monday a press release announcing its participation for the first time in Global Money Week 2022 (GMW). The annual global campaign aims to raise awareness on the importance of ensuring the financial education of young people, considered essential for making sound financial decisions, protecting both investors and the general public.

According to the press release, Global Money Week, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, takes place between 21 to 27 March and is organized by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

Request for the transformation of KEDIPES expected to be submitted to the DG of Competition in July

The request for the transformation of Cyprus Asset Management Company (KEDIPES) into an asset management body and the implementation of the mortgage-to-rent plan is expected to be formally submitted to the Directorate General of Competition next July, said a Ministry of Finance official, stressing that the Government is processing the issues of eligibility so that the new plan for the protection of the first residence and professional housing does not have the same results as the ESTIA plan.

Speaking before the Parliamentary Committee on Finance, Anthi Chrysostomou Lapathioti, Director of the Financial Stability Department at the Ministry of Finance, did not provide specific information as the issue is being processed by an external consultant, in order to complete the plan to the General Directorate of Competition.

New country categorization in effect March 24

Cyprus authorities on Monday announced a new categorization of countries based on their epidemiological risk as regards COVID 19 which is put into effect March 24.

Green Category countries – Low risk countries at current stage

Third countries: United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia

Red Category countries – Increased risk countries compared to the Green and Orange Category

European Union member states: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Denmark, Greece, Estonia, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Croatia, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Hungary, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Czech Republic, Finland

Small states: Andorra, Monaco, Vatican City, San Marino

Cyprus government announces increase of financial support to rural, mountain and remote areas

The government of Cyprus announced on Monday revised projects to support rural, mountain, remote and less-privileged areas, by which more communities and groups of the population will benefit.

Among others, increased allowances are given, there has been an increase of the minimum income requirement and people are given the capability to build a permanent residence outside development areas in outermost mountain and outermost remote regions.

Interior Minister, Nicos Nouris, also said that the government decided to give separated plots of land to families which are still available after the termination of a plan in 2013 for giving plots of land to families with low income.

Cyprus ready to receive children from Ukraine, has prepared an action plan

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth has prepared an action plan for the reception of children coming to Cyprus from war-torn Ukraine, Minister Prodromos Prodromou told the Parliament on Monday.

He said that he had a meeting last week with the Ambassador of Ukraine and he was briefed in detail about the situation adding that the action plan includes among others, procedures for the enrollment of students in schools, language teaching and other measures that are needed for their smooth integration.

The Minister said some reforms will be introduced which were discussed before such as using the summer months for language lessons for all children whose mother tongue is not Greek.

Cypriot and Israeli authorities to conduct joint exercise at Larnaca airport

A joint exercise of the Cyprus police and the Israeli authorities Aviation Security will take place on March 22 at Larnaca airport.

A police press release said that the aim of the “Joint Tactical Training 2022” is cooperation and immediate response in case of an illegal incident in an airport.

It is added that other involved airport stakeholders, as Hermes Airports that manages and controls Larnaca International Airport, the Civil Aviation, private security company ICTS and ground-handling companies will participate in the exercise.

New COVID-19 cases climb to 5.286 on Monday, one death recorded

The number of new COVID-19 cases recorded a significant increase on Monday, as they reached 5.286, while the death of one patient was announced. The positivity rate stands at 4.63%.

The total number of patients who have died is 915 and of the cases confirmed so far 382.642.

The patient who died is a 63 year old man, who passed away on March 20.

The number of COVID-19 patients who are being treated in hospital is 149, of whom 31 are in a critical condition (7 intubated in an Intensive Treatment Unit and 24 in an Increased Care Unit).

The percentage of the patients who are hospitalized and have not been vaccinated is 54.37%.

Twenty one patients, who have ceased to be contagious, continue to be treated in an Intensive Treatment Unit and are intubated due to COVID-19.
