Cyprus records 3,714 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, 119 patients are in hospital, positivity rate at 4.43%

Cyprus recorded 3,714 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday with a positivity rate of 4.43%. No deaths were recorded.

According to the Health Ministry, 119 patients with COVID-19 are being treated in hospital, including 22 who are in a serious condition. Of the serious cases, six are in Intensive Care Units, with five of them intubated, while another 16 are being treated in high-dependency units. In total, 60.51% of patients with COVID-19 being treated in hospital are not vaccinated, the Ministry said.

On Wednesday, 83,857 tests were carried out – 3,630 PCR and 80,227 rapid tests – and 3,714 new cases were detected. The positivity rate is at 4.43%. So far, 363,792 cases have been recorded in the Republic of Cyprus. The number of deaths from COVID-19 so far, is 904.

Job vacancies rise to 9,643 at end of Q4 2021

The number of job vacancies in Cyprus rose to 9,643 in the 4th quarter of 2021, rising by 94.3% year on year, data released on Wednesday by the Statistical Service of Cyprus (Cysta) show.

Compared to the 3rd quarter of 2021 the number of job vacancies increased by 3,285 or by 51.7%.

The job vacancy rate in the 4th quarter of 2021 was 2.4%, while the job vacancy rate in the previous quarter and the 4th quarter of 2020 was 2.4% and 1.3% respectively.

The greatest job vacancy rates in the 4th quarter of 2021 were recorded in the Sectors of Information and Communication with 4.2%, followed by Accommodation and Food Service Activities with 3.3%, while job vacancies in Wholesale and Retail Trade, Repair of Motor Vehicles and Motorcycles amounted to 3,1% and in Manufacturing 3.0%, Cystat said.

House President reaffirms close Cyprus-Slovakia relations to outgoing Slovak Ambassador

House President Annita Demetriou reaffirmed on Wednesday the friendly relations and close cooperation between Cyprus and Slovakia during a meeting with the outgoing Slovak Ambassador to Cyprus, Ján Škoda.

According to a press release by the Press and Information Office, Demetriou received Škoda on the occasion of his departure from Cyprus. The Ambassador was accompanied by the First Secretary of the Embassy, Vanda Šipošová.

Harmonised inflation rises to highest point in 19 years in February, driven by fuel prices

Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) rose by an annual 5.8% in February in Cyprus, recording the highest reading since April 2003, pushed upwards by rising oil prices.

According to date released on Wednesday by the Statistical Service of Cyprus (Cystat), For the period January – February 2022 the HICP recorded an increase of 5.4% compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.

According to Cystat, compared to the index of January 2021, the HICP increased by 0.9%.

The largest annual change in terms of economic origin, was recorded in Energy with 26.2%.

Compared to February 2021, the greatest changes were noted in Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels and Transport with percentages of 13.4% and 11.2% respectively, Cystat added.
