Cyprus can contribute to EU’s diversification through its engagement on a regional level, President says

President Anastasiades has underlined the role that the cooperation between Cyprus and other countries in the region, such as Egypt, Israel and Saudi Arabia, can play towards the goal of the EU’s diversification of energy routes, in a tweet sent during the second day of the meeting of the European Council in Brussels.

Anastasiades writes that the meeting is an “extremely important discussion on Europe’s energy independence in the aftermath of the war in Ukraine, and the need to diversify EU energy sources”.

“? ?ffered my support to initiatives presented by EU Leaders, calling for collective actions that will safeguard our energy supply & protect our citizens and businesses from increase in energy prices” the President wrote, giving special thanks to Greek prime minister Kyriakos MItsotakis “for his efforts in this respect”.

Cyprus Defence Minister attends military parade in Athens marking anniversary of 25 March

Cyprus Defence Minister Charalambos Petrides attended the grand military parade held on Friday in Athens to mark of the start of the war for Greek Independence from Ottoman rule on March 25, 1821.

In his statements at Syntagma Square, after the parade, Minister Petrides noted that “the values that inspired the struggle of 1821 –freedom and the right to live safely in one’s own country– are once again relevant throughout Europe.”

“Greece is here today to remind us of these values and to defend them with skill and determination,” he added.

Cyprus problem a huge challenge for the international community, Greek Ambassador says

Greek Ambassador to Cyprus, Ioannis Papameletiou, has said that the non settlement of the Cyprus problem for 47 years now constitutes a huge challenge for the country itself, Greece and the whole international community.

In a televised message on the occasion of the Greek Independence Day, Papameletiou also noted that the position of principles on developments in Ukraine must be fully implemented in the case of Cyprus as well, as the latter has also been a victim of invasion and occupation.

Papameletiou underlined that for Greece the Cyprus problem constitutes the primary national issue and that lifting the repercussions of the invasion and ending occupation, with full restoration of the international and European legal order, remains a very firm objective.

Cyprus conveys political demand for an end to the war in Ukraine

Cyprus conveyed on Friday the political demand for an end to the war in Ukraine.

In statements to the media after a parade in Nicosia to mark the anniversary of the start of the war for the Greek Independence on March 25, 1821, Education, Culture, Sports and Youth Minister, Prodromos Prodromou, who represented Cyprus President, Nicos Anastasiades, currently in Brussels for the European Council summit, also noted that “our thoughts are always with the Greek community” in Ukraine.

At the same time, Prodromou underlinedon behalf of the President and the government, that “we remain committed to pursuing a just, peaceful settlement of the Cyprus problem, by political means, that will result in a modern European state, a common homeland for all the people of Cyprus and with the ideal of freedom prevailing”.

More relaxations in next ten days if hospitalisations remain stable, Health Minister says

Cyprus Health Minister Michalis Hadjipantela said on Friday that while new COVID-19 cases have increased, hospitalisations have remained stable, adding that if the continue to be stable there will be more relaxations of measures in the next ten days.

In statements to the press after a parade in Pafos, marking the anniversary of 25th March 1821 which signalled the start of the Greek revolution against the Ottoman Empire, Hadjipantela said that at this point in time one should monitor hospitalisations rather than cases.

If hospitalisations remain stable as they are now then there will be more relaxations of measures in the next ten days, he added.

Bond between Cyprus and Greece ‘sacred and enduring’, President says

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades said on Friday that the bond between Cyprus and Greece is “sacred and enduring”.

In a message on Twitter, President Anastasiades who is in Brussels for the European Council summit, marked the anniversary of the 25h March 1821 which signalled the start of the Greek revolution against the Ottoman Empire.

“The flag of Cypriot fighters of 1821 will always remind us of the sacred and enduring bond between Cyprus and Greece,” he said, conveying his best wishes to all Greeks.

Three deaths from COVID-19, 3,329 new cases on Friday, 151 people are in hospital

Authorities in Cyprus reported three deaths from COVID-19 and 3,329 new cases on Friday. The positivity rate is 7.27%. At the same time 151 patients with the disease are being treated in hospital, 20 of whom in a serious condition.

Total deaths have reached 925 and cases 400,534, the Health Ministry said in a press release.

The deceased were three men aged 80, 76 and 69 who passed away today.

At the same time, 151 patients with COVID-19 are being treated in state hospitals, 20 of whom in a serious condition; 6 are being treated in an ICU intubated and another 14 are in a high-dependency unit.

The percentage of patients who are unvaccinated is 52.32%.

Nineteen patients who are no longer infectious continue to be treated intubated due to COVID in an ICU.

On Friday a total of 45,788 tests were carried
