The international community must work for a ceasefire agreement in Ukraine, Cyprus President tells EU counterparts

Cyprus President, Nicos Anastasiades, has said that, as a victim of a foreign invasion and of ongoing occupation of part of its territory, while being under the constant threat of Turkey Cyprus fully understands the dreadful situation which Ukraine and its people face.

In an intervention during the dinner of the EU heads of state on Thursday evening, in the framework of the informal European Council meeting, in Versailles, Anastasiades also underlined that it is crucial for the international community to work with a view to secure, the soonest possible, a ceasefire agreement that will stop the bloodshed and open the way for negotiations, while he also noted the fact that Turkey, a candidate country for EU membership, refuses to abide by the sanctions against Russia.
