The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in the field of Higher Education and Research between Cyprus and Egypt was scheduled at a meeting of the Cypriot

Cyprus’ Minister of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth Prodromos Prodromou agreed with the Minister of Higher Education and Research of Egypt, Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, to sign a Memorandum of Understanding in the field of Higher Education and Research between the two countries.

According to an announcement by the Ministry of Education, in the context of the first Egypt-Cyprus Intergovernmental Meeting in Cairo, Prodromou had a working meeting last Saturday, with his Egyptian counterpart.

Cyprus’ comparative advantages presented at Berlin International Hospitality Investment Forum

Cyprus’ comparative advantages as an investment destination and a competitive business hub, as well as the important investment opportunities that it offers, were presented by the Cyprus investment promotion agency “Invest Cyprus” at the leading annual conference and exhibition for the global hotel industry “International Hospitality Investment Forum”.

A press release of Invest Cyprus said that the Forum, held in Berlin between 1-3 September, gathered more than 1,200 participants from 80 countries, among which were people from the leading companies in the global hotel industry.

CBC, Banks, regulatory bodies and stake holders agree on ten steps to speed up banking procedures

The Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC), professional regulatory bodies and business stake holders agreed on ten steps to rationalise banking procedures such as Know-Your Client (KyC) and client due diligence, speeding up banking transactions vital for the economy, while ensuring compliance with the EU and international anti money-laundering regulations, the CBC Governor Constantinos Herodotou announced on Monday.

These issues have been discussed in a wide meeting convened by the Herodotou, in the presence of CEOs and compliance officers of Commercial Banks, the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Employers and Industrialists Federation and professional regulatory bodies such as the Cyprus Bar Association and the Cyprus Institute of Certified Public Accountants along with Invest Cyprus and the Cyprus Investment Funds Association.

Cyprus authorities announce re-evaluation of epidemiological situation of six countries

Cyprus` Ministry of Health announced on Monday a re-evaluation of the epidemiological situation of six countries as regards COVID-19 which will be in effect from Thursday, September 9 onwards.

In particular, Saudi Arabia moves to the Green Category from the Orange Category, Romania from the Green to the Orange Category and Kuwait to the Orange Category from the Red Category.

At the same time, Slovenia, Norway and Canada move from the Orange to the Red Category.

Cyprus Agriculture and Environment Minister discusses cooperation with Egyptian counterparts

Cyprus’ Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment Costas Kadis held bilateral meetings with his Egyptian counterparts, Minister of Agriculture Al Sayed Al Qusair and Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad, on the sidelines of the First Cyprus-Egypt Intergovernmental Meeting, held in Cairo, last Saturday.

The meetings focused on deepening cooperation between the two countries in the fields of agricultural research, aquaculture and tackling pollution at sea, a press release from the Press and Information Office said on Monday.

Kadis agreed with his Egyptian counterpart responsible for agriculture to expand existing cooperation in the cultivation of olive trees in Egypt by deploying a team of Cypriot experts to provide technical assistance on olive cultivation management.

Building permits in first half of 2021 mark significant recovery, exceeding the 2019 levels

Building permits issued in the first half of 2021 marked significant recovery compared with the Covid-hit first half of last year, while exceeding the respective levels of the first half of 2019, according to data released by the Statistical Service of Cyprus (Cystat).

According to Cystat, during the period January – June 2021, 3.990 building permits were issued compared to 3,153 in the corresponding period of the previous year, recording an increase of 26.

Cyprus and Egypt to establish Joint Maritime Committee

Cyprus and Egypt decided the establishment of a Joint Maritime Committee in the context of the first Intergovernmental meeting between the two countries, held in Cairo last Saturday.

According to a press release by Deputy Ministry of Shipping, Cypriot Deputy Minister Vassilios Demetriades had a meeting with his Egyptian counterpart Kamel Al Wazir.

The meeting confirmed the excellent relations between the two countries in the field of shipping and reviewed the Bilateral Shipping Agreement, signed in 2006.

Recovery and Resilience Plan important for growth and public finances, Cyprus Finance Minister points out

The successful implementation of the Recovery and Resilience Plan, totaling € 1.24 billion, is very important both for public finances and for growth perspective and is expected to add another 7% in Cyprus’ GDP and thousands of jobs, said Minister of Finance Constantinos Petrides.

Speaking during a meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Finance, the Minister said that the Recovery and Resilience Plan aims to help public finances, facilitate investments in a time of crisis and add value to the economy of EU member – states until 2030.

Cabinet to discuss Tuesday the implementation of government reforms, projects and policies

Ministers participating in a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday will be briefed on the implementation of the reforms, projects and policies announced by the President of Cyprus or included in the Recovery and Resilience Plan of Cyprus.

According to a presidency press release the meeting will also review the projects included in the “Exandas” portal, through which citizens may be informed at any time about the progress of the projects.

As the press release points out, the President of the Republic will remind members of the Cabinet that reforms, demanded by the citizens themselves, are part of the governance program and every effort should be made to accelerate them.

Police fine 31 individuals and 6 establishment owners over violations of COVID measures

Cyprus Police reported 31 individuals and 6 establishment owners in the last 24 hours across the island for violating measures in place to contain the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

A police spokesperson told CNA that in the last 24hours ending on 06:00 local time, 3.413 checks were carried out across the government-controlled areas.

In Nicosia 1.159 checks were carried out and 2 individuals and 1 shop owner were reported, in Limassol 255 checks and as a result 16 individuals and 3 shop owners were reported. In Larnaca the Police carried out 721 checks and reported 2 individuals and 1 shop owner.

In Pafos 138 checks were carried out with 5 individuals and 1 shop owner reported, while in Famagusta 6 individuals were fined after 828 checks and in the Morphou area no fines were issued after 188 checks.
