Cyprus Presidential Commissioner holds meetings in London

Presidential Commissioner Photis Photiou has reiterated the need for any settlement of the Cyprus issue to be in line with the UN decisions and resolutions, dismissing Turkish “neo-Ottoman” positions about a “two-state solution” as an approach that “undermines” the UN Secretary-General`s efforts.

Photiou added that the Greek Cypriot side is ready to attend new negotiations “at any time.”

He was addressing UK Cypriots at St Mary`s church in London, where he has been holding meetings with Diaspora officials throughout the weekend.

Cyprus President begins New York visit

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades, arrived in New York on Sunday morning where he will address the UN General Assembly, will have a meeting with the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and a lunch with the UN Secretary General and the Turkish-Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar.

According to the presidency, President Anastasiades arrived in New York accompanied by Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Christodoulides, Government Spokesperson Marios Pelekanos and other government officials.

Later today he will attend an event to be held at the residence of the Permanent Representative of the Republic to the UN Andreas Hadjichrysanthou, during which the President will honour the Executive Director of the American-Jewish Committee David Harris.

Cyprus 5th among EU countries in progress achieved on research and innovation, RIF director tells CNA

Cyprus ranks fifth among EU countries in the progress achieved regarding research and innovation, Theodoros Loukaidis, Director General of the Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF) told CNA.

In an interview with the Cyprus New Agency, he said that innovation has been significantly boosted recently in Cyprus. He referred to the expansion of the Cypriot ecosystem of Research and Innovation achieved in the last years, the important possibilities for further development as well as the actions to widen the culture and innovation and research on the island.

Ministry of Finance in consultations soon with stakeholders about 780 Estia applicants

The Ministry of Finance is at an advanced stage and is expected to begin consultations among stakeholders (banks and the Cyprus Asset Management Company Ltd) on how to support the 780 borrowers with non-performing loans who have applied for support from the Estia scheme.

A credible source told CNA that the approval of the Directorate General for Competition of the European Commission is expected regarding the government plans for the 780 applicants so that in turn the plan can be put into implementation. The same source expressed the hope that this approval will be given in the next three weeks in order to proceed with the resolution of the problem soon.

Private sector to lead roll out of green hydrogen, Cyprus Hydrogen Association Chairman tells CNA (Correction)

The private sector is set to lead the roll out of green hydrogen by investing in its production so that it can be used in the sectors of transport and industry.

In an interview with the Cyprus News Agency (CNA), Chairman of the Cyprus Hydrogen Association, established last March under the umbrella of the Cyprus Employers and Industrialists Federation (OEB), Makis Ketonis, underlined the advantages of using green hydrogen.

We must continue efforts for a Cyprus solution based on the agreed framework, said Speaker Demetriou

Cyprus remains divided since 1974 counting wounds, dead, missing, refugees, enclaved persons, violations of human rights, the desecration of its cultural heritage and Turkish settlers, said House of Representatives President Annita Demetriou, pledging to continue efforts on the agreed framework and the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

Speaking at the memorial service of Stelios Mavrommatis, she said that the results of the Turkish occupation stay with us on a daily basis. Sixty-five years after the events of the EOKA liberation struggle, we are reminded daily of what we have achieved and what we have lost, and what will happen in the future as we are under the continued threats of the Turkish side.

Government committed to efforts to ascertain fate of missing persons, Defence Minister pledges

The government’s commitment to efforts to effectively and fully ascertain the fate of the missing persons in the framework of the Committee for Missing Persons was underlined by Defence Minister Charalambos Petrides on Saturday.

In a speech at the unveiling of a monument at Kapouti community for those missing since the 1974 Turkish invasion, Petrides said that unfortunately the efforts are being impeded by the occupation regime’s refusal to cooperate, making harder to a great extent the work of the committee.

We have a duty and a heavy legacy to continue the struggle with vigour and unity and since Turkey continues to put forward its unacceptable demands in the country’s exclusive economic zone, in Varosha and promoting a two-state solution that will divide once and for all the island, the minister added.

Cyprus police fine 37 for violation of COVID-19 measures

A Police spokesperson told CNA that 3,809 checks were carried out in the last 24 hours. A total of 1,619 checks in Nicosia where only one individual was fined, in Limsasol from 240 checks 12 people were fined and four establishment owners.

In Larnaca, from 644 checks two establishment owners were fined, in Pafos from 519 checks two were reported and 8 shop owners reported, in Famagusta after 415 checks, 8 people were reported and in the Morphou area no one was fined after 190 checks.

General healthcare system expenditure between January-August 2021 at €794.7 million

The actual expenditure of the General Healthcare System (GHS) in Cyprus between January-August 2021, amounted to €794.7 million and are expected to reach €1.29 bn for the year, compared to €780 mn, according to Health Insurance Organisation official Angelos Tropi.

He told CNA that despite the repercussions due to the pandemic, expenditure remains according to initial estimations, adding that any deficit will be covered by the fund’s accumulated reserves totalling €300 mn.

Cyprus reports no deaths from COVID-19 on Sunday, 94 new cases, 98 are in hospital

Cyprus reported no deaths from COVID-19 on Sunday, 94 new cases while 98 patients with the disease are being treated in hospital, 39 of whom in a serious condition.

In a press release the Ministry of Health says that 78.58% of people treated in hospital are not vaccinated. At the same time 10 post-COVID patients, who are no longer infectious, continue to be treated in ICUs intubated and in a serious condition.

On Sunday 40,586 tests, PCR and antigen rapid tests were carried out, detecting 94 new cases. The positivity rate is 0.23%. Total deaths remain at 547, 349 or 64% men and 198 or 36% women with a median age of 76.3. The total number of cases has reached 118,957.

Ninety eight patients with COVID-19 are being treated in hospitals, 39 of whom in a serious condition; 17 are intubated in ICUs and another 22 are being treated in an ACU.
