House President notes France’s principles stance for a Cyprus settlement

House President Annita Demetriou received on Wednesday Jean François Mbaye, a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the French National Assembly and expressed her sincere gratitude for the principled position of France vis-à-vis the Cyprus problem and the efforts for a settlement, on the basis of international law, UN resolutions and EU principles.

With Mbaye, who was accompanied by the French Ambassador to Cyprus, Salina-Grenet Catalano, they also discussed climate change and environmental protection, according to an announcement by the House of Representatives.

Foreign Minister to meet Austrian Minister for the EU and Constitution

Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Christodoulides and Austria’s Minister for the European Union and Constitution Karoline Edtstadler will hold a tete-a-tete meeting and consultations Thursday in Nicosia, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a press release Wednesday.

The two Ministers are expected to exchange views on issues related to the preparation of the forthcoming General Affairs Council to be held in September, focusing on the priorities set by the Slovenian Presidency of the Council of the EU, on the ongoing coordination of the Member States for a more effective management of the pandemic, on the EU’s relations with third countries, including with Turkey, and on current issues of special interest such as migration, enlargement and the Conference on the Future of Europe, the press release reads.

Deputy Minister tells CNA he sees prospects for Saudi tourists through Bahrain

Cyprus’ cooperation with Gulf Air opens up new prospects for attracting tourists from Bahrain, as well as from the larger Saudi Arabian market, Deputy Minister of Tourism, Savvas Perdios, told CNA, following his contacts in Bahrein.

Perdios was part of the delegation accompanying the President of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades, during his recent visit in Bahrain and stayed there to hold additional contacts with senior officials from Gulf Air, the Tourism Board and the country’s Investment Promotion Agency. Perdios also gave several interviews to local media, to promote Cyprus as a destination.

President to attend EUMED and UN General Assembly

President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades heads to Athens on Thursday to attend the EUMED Summit, which will take place on 17 September. The President will then travel to New York for the UN General Assembly and his meeting with the Organization’s Secretary General, Antonio Guterres.

Government Spokesperson Marios Pelekanos told the press Wednesday that the Summit of the southern countries of the European Union, EUMED, will be held for the first time with the participation of Slovenia and Croatia and will be attended by the Heads of State or Government of the participating countries.

Cyprus authorities report one death and 230 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday

Cyprus` health authorities announced on Wednesday the death of a 64-year-old woman to COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 535, and 230 new cases out of 75,645 tests. The positivity rate stands at 0.30%. At the same time, 108 people are being treated in hospitals across the island, 43 of whom in a serious condition.

In a press release the Ministry of Health said that 75% of patients with COVID-19 who are treated in hospitals have not been vaccinated. Eleven post-COVID patients who are no longer infectious, continue being treated in ICUs, while being intubated, in a serious condition, it is added.

The deaths announced concern a 64-year-old woman, who passed away today in Nicosia General Hospital.

Cyprus participates in International Chamber of Shipping meeting in London

The board of the International Chamber of Shipping, representing national shipowners’ associations on a worldwide level, convened in London on Tuesday. Cyprus was represented by Themis Papadopoulos, President of the Cyprus Shipping Chamber, who is also the ICS vice-chairman.

The meeting was also attended by the Director General of the Cyprus Shipping Chamber, Thomas Kazakos.

During the meeting, participants examined technical and environmental maritime issues arising from the implementation of environmental regulations from the EU and the International Maritime Organisation. They also discussed the future strategy of the international maritime industry.

Cyprus Police fine 28 individuals and 2 establishment owners for violations of COVID measures

Cyprus Police fined 28 individuals and 2 establishment owners for violation of protective measures in place to contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A Police spokesperson told CNA that in the last 24 hours ending at 06:00 local time on Wednesday, police officers carried out a total of 2,975 checks across the government-controlled areas of the island.

Most fines were issued to individuals not wearing protective masks in public spaces and establishments.

Cyprus ranks sixth among EU countries with the smallest drop in flights in 2021

The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works has announced that according to Eurostat, Cyprus ranks sixth among EU countries with the smallest drop in flights in 2021 compared to those in 2019.

It said that the initiatives undertaken by the Ministry, in collaboration with the Deputy Ministry of Tourism regarding Cyprus’ connectivity are yielding results. In 2020, passenger traffic to and from Cyprus’ Airports was 1,804,187 passengers while in 2021 it rose to 2,881,631.

Cyprus House President expresses appreciation for Egypt’s support

Cyprus House President, Annita Demetriou, expressed on Wednesday her sincere appreciation for the position of principles and the steadfast support of Egypt to the efforts for a Cyprus settlement, particularly in light of the escalating Turkish provocations in the fenced off area of Famagusta.

According to a House press release, Demetriou who met with the Ambassador of Egypt to Cyprus, Amr Mohsen Hamza, also underlined that the Republic of Cyprus has the inalienable right to exercise its sovereign rights within its Exclusive Economic Zone, according to the international law.

During the meeting, the House President and the Egyptian Ambassador commended the historic friendly relations and the important impetus given to the cooperation between the two countries, particularly most recently with the first Intergovernmental Summit between Cyprus and Egypt.

Security Council resolutions the only acceptable framework for a Cyprus solution, Greek PM says

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis reiterated Greece`s commitment to the UN Security Council’s resolutions as the only acceptable framework for the solution of the Cyprus problem, during his meeting on Wednesday with the General Secretary of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, who is visiting Athens.

Greek Prime Minister congratulated the newly-elected General Secretary of AKEL and assured him of Greece`s continued support to the efforts for a solution to the Cyprus problem. “I consider it my obligation to always meet the leaders of the parties of Cyprus”, Mitsotakis said.
