Greece and Cyprus sign Joint Declaration of Intent on research and innovation

Greek Deputy Minister for Research and Innovation, Christos Dimas, and Cyprus` Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, Kyriakos Kokkinos, signed on Tuesday a Joint Declaration of Intent for cooperation in a future joint transnational program on research and innovation. The Joint Declaration was signed in the presence of the Greek Minister of Development and Investment, Adonis Georgiades.

In their statement, the two sides referred to the great importance of research and innovation for the economic and social development of Greece and Cyprus, expressing their willingness to deepen their transnational cooperation in the fields of research and innovation.

Non-emergency surgeries to resume, Cyprus Health Ministry says

The Council of Ministers approved on Tuesday the resumption of the scheduled non-urgent surgeries and patient admissions following a proposal presented by the Minister of Health, Michalis Hadjipandelas

The Ministry says that the Council of Ministers decided that the improved epidemiological picture of the last few days in Cyprus, as well as the reduction and stabilisation of the number of patients treated with COVID-19, allow for the resumption, from September 8, of non-emergency surgeries and patient admissions.

Ministry of Health announces two deaths and 206 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday

Two more people lost their lives due to COVID-19 and another 206 new cases were recorded, Cyprus` Ministry of Health announced on Tuesday.

A press release said the total number of people who died of COVID now stood at 518. At the same time, 141 patients are being treated in hospitals, of w

hich 39 in serious condition while 80,15% of the COVID hospitalisations concern unvaccinated people.

Requests by Turkish Cypriots on EU Digital COVID Certificates and crossings under consideration

Requests put forward last week by the Turkish Cypriot side in the framework of the bicommunal Technical Committee on Health are under consideration and a reply will be given to Turkish Cypriots soon, a source has told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA).

According to the same source, the requests that have been forwarded to the Health Ministry of the Republic concern the EU Digital COVID Certificates issued by the Republic for Turkish Cypriots, as well as crossings to the government – controlled areas of the Republic.

A virtual meeting of the Committee is scheduled to take place on September 17, however a meeting could be arranged earlier, or answers could be sent in writing, the source noted.

Eurostat: Ratio of primary school students to each teacher at 12 for Cyprus

The ratio of primary school students to teachers in Cyprus was at 12.3 in 2019, compared to an average of 13.5 across the European Union, according to the latest figures by Eurostat, the EU’s statistical service.

The lowest ratios were registered in Greece (8.7), Luxembourg (9.0), and Poland (9.6). Romania had the highest pupil-teacher ratio (19.4). France and Czechia followed with ratios of 18.8 and 18.7, respectively.

The average number of pupils per teacher at the primary level in the EU decreased slightly from 13.6 in 2018 to 13.5 in 2019. The pupil/ teacher ratio also decreased in Cyprus during the same time period, from 12.6 to 12.3. The ratio in Cyprus has been relatively stable since 2015, when it fell from 13.6 in 2014 to 12.2.

FIFPRO congress underway in Limassol

The annual FIFPRO congress is taking place in Limassol and was kicked off on Monday evening with its official dinner.

FIFPRO Europe for 2021, organized by the Pancyprian Footballers` Association (PASP), is the first physical gathering of European football associations since the start of the pandemic.

This year’s FIFPRO Europe Congress is also an electoral year.

The congress’ deliberations are underway at St. Raphael hotel in Limassol with the participation of UEFA and European Club Association representatives.

Cyprus bids farewell to Mikis Theodorakis and will be represented at the farewell ceremony (Repeat)

The Republic of Cyprus will be represented at the farewell ceremony for Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth, Prodromos Prodromou, according to a Presidency’s press release. The ceremony will take place at the Metropolitan Cathedral on Wednesday, September 8, at 15:00.

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth has decided that flags in the schools will be flying at half-mast on Thursday.

Presidential Commissioner assures Patriarch of Alexandria of Cyprus support

Presidential Commissioner Photis Photiou assured the Patriarch of Alexandria and all Africa, Theodoros II of the continued support of the government of Cyprus to the patriarchate and the work that it is carrying out in Africa to handle the problems faced by overseas Greeks.

The Commissioner met on Tuesday with the Patriarch who is paying an official visit to Cyprus.

A press release said the two discussed issues and problems faced by Greek orthodox churches and monasteries overseas which fall under the jurisdiction of the patriarchate.

Cyprus underlines policies to attract young farmers unlock rural potential

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Andreas Gregoriou, underlined the policies and actions implemented in Cyprus to encourage young farmers to relocate to rural areas.

He was speaking during the informal AGRIFISH Council meeting in Kranj, Slovenia held from 5-7 September.

An official press release said that the main issue on the agenda was “Strengthening the dialogue between the urban and rural areas” as well as the role of rural areas in society, and the challenges agriculture is facing in this process.

Presidential Commissioner points out Turkey’s responsibilities over the fate of missing persons

Presidential Commissioner, Photis Photiou said the fate of the missing persons is the most tragic aspect of the drama experienced by the people of Cyprus since the coup and the Turkish invasion of 1974 and said Turkey has great responsibility over their fate.

In a gathering on Monday to dedicate a street in memory of missing Rogiros Koumetos from Lakatamia, Nicosia, Photiou said that for 47 years we continue to fight to ascertain the fate of the 783 missing persons and to give answers to the pleas of their loved ones.

He said the occupation regime has great responsibilities and it should at last take them since the relatives have every right to be informed about the fate of their loved ones and to bury their remains, according to religious traditions and rites.
