Australian politician most likely to succeed Elizabeth Spehar as UNSG’s Special Representative in Cyprus

An Australian female politician seems to be the favourite to succeed the UN Secretary General`s Special Representative and head of the UN peacekeeping force (UNFICYP) in Cyprus, Elizabeth Spehar, who leaves her post at the end of September. Spehar served as the head of the UN mission in Nicosia for five years.

The Cyprus News Agency (CNA) has learned that Nicosia has already given its consent for the appointment of the Australian.

Energy minister satisfied with Cairo meetings, 15/9 technical committee on the joint gas pipeline project to meet

The technical committee that is working on the preparations for a joint gas pipeline project between Cyprus and Egypt will convene on 15th September, according to a statement released on Sunday by the office of the Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry, Natasa Pelides. The minister said she was very satisfied with her meetings in the Egyptian capital on Saturday.

The Energy Ministers of Cyprus and Egypt also decided on Saturday to sign a Memorandum of Understanding for the electricity interconnection between the two countries in the coming months.

We will not give up and surrender due to Turkey’s illegal actions, Defence Minister says

Cyprus Defence Minister, Charalambos Petrides, has said that that “we are not going to give up and surrender” due to the illegal actions and unacceptable positions of the Turkish side, noting that “we react using all available means, our EU membership, the strategic alliances with all neighbouring states and international diplomacy, pursuing to strengthen our positions and proposals.”

Addressing on Sunday morning the unveiling of a m?nument for the people of Meniko who were killed and went missing during the Turkish invasion of 1974, Petrides underlined that “we have made it clear to the international community that a Cyprus settlement will not derogate from the UN resolutions and the agreed framework of a bizonal, bicommunal federation.”

Cyprus police fine 40 citizens and 11 shop managers for violating measures against COVID-19

Cyprus police reported 40 citizens and 11 shop managers, during the last 24 hours, for breaching the measures taken to contain the spread of COVID-19.

A police spokesperson told CNA that a total of 3,652 checks were done from 0600 local time on Saturday until 0600 on Sunday.

Most citizens were fined for not using a protective face mask while in public places and shops.

Two new COVID deaths, 147 new cases, Ministry of Health announces

Two new deaths to COVID-19 and another 147 new cases were announced on Sunday by the Ministry of Health.

A press release said the total number of people who died of COVID is now 515. At the same time, 143 patients are being treated in hospitals, of which 46 in serious condition while 81.82% of the COVID hospitalisations are unvaccinated.

In addition, 16 post-COVID patients remain intubated in ICUs.

In the last 24 hours there have been 29.833 laboratory tests and 147 new cases were diagnosed (positivity rate : 0.49%), bringing the total number of cases to 116.768.

The deceased were a 52-year-old man and an 83-year-old woman. Both died on Sunday at Nicosia General hospital.

Out of the 46 patients who are in a critical condition, 15 are intubated. In the Famagusta General Hospital there are 25 patients, 18 in Nicos
