Cypriot parliamentarian travels to Paris for a committee meeting for ECHR appointments

Cyprus MP Costis Efstathiou, member of the island`s delegation to PACE, Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, travels to Paris Wednesday to attend a committee meeting for the appointment of judges at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).

The meeting takes place 16-17 September.

An announcement by the Parliament says that during the meeting, hearings with judges from Russia, Moldavia, Czech Republic and Ukraine will take place.

Commercial air transport in recovery, but still reduced by 24% in Cyprus compared with 2019

Traffic in commercial flights across the European Union, including Cyprus, in August 2021 was reduced compared to August 2019 due to the effects of the pandemic, according to data provided by Eurocontrol and presented by Eurostat, the EU’s statistical office.

Even though the number of commercial flights has been increasing across Europe during the past few months, traffic has a long way to go before reaching pre-pandemic levels.

In August 2021, the number of commercial flights to and from Cyprus had decreased by 24% compared to August 2019.

Cyprus and France conduct joint exercise off the coast of Cyprus

Cyprus and France conducted a joint exercise off the eastern coast of Cyprus, with the participation of French frigate Aconit and a helicopter from the 460 SAR Squadron.

An announcement by the National Guard General Staff says the drill took place in the maritime area east of Larnaca. The AW-139 helicopter was involved in crossdeck operations on Aconit.

The aim of this exercise was to increase operational readiness and the combat capability of the units involved, the announcement says. Interoperability is also strengthened while the drill proves in a tangible manner the excellent relations of the two countries’ armed forces, which is constantly being upgraded, the announcement says.

NASA’s 10th Space Apps Challenge returns to Cyprus

The Cyprus Space Exploration Organisation (CSEO) announced Tuesday that NASA’s 10th Space Apps Challenge will take place in Cyprus between 2 and 3 October, offering winners life-changing prizes.

“Participants from all over the island are welcome to join the event, which with our mentorship and high caliber support has achieved multiple international wins and successes for our country”, CSEO said in a press release.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it said, the event will take place online.

Cyprus Energy Minister discusses about investements, energy, commerce, SMEs and industry with Bahraini Ministers

Cyprus Energy, Commerce and Industry Minister, Natasa Pilides, discussed on Monday in Manama with Ministers of Bahrain issues related to investments, energy, commerce, small and medium enterprises and industry.

According to a press release circulated on Tuesday by the PIO, Pilides held, on the sidelines of the state visit which Cyprus President, Nicos Anastasiades, paid to Bahrain, separate meetings with the Minister of Oil, Shaikh Mohammed bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, the Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, Zayed R. Alzayani, and the Minister of Youth and Sports Affairs, Aymen Bin Tawfeeq Almoayed.

Vaccination rates allow us to look into future with optimism, says Cyprus Health Minister

Cyprus’ Health Minister Michalis Hadjipantela on Tuesday praised the responsible stance shown by the majority of the Cypriots leading to 80% of the population having being vaccinated with 1st dose and 76% being fully vaccinated, according to figures released earlier.

In a written statement the Minister said that the responsible behaviour of fellow citizens has “helped us win yet another battle in the war against the pandemic and allows us to look into the future with optimism.”

Hadjipantela said that the efforts place Cyprus among the EU member states which have reached and exceeded the vaccination goals set at European level.

Twenty-two individuals and five establishment owners reported for violation of COVID-19 measures

Police reported 22 individuals and five establishment owners for violations of COVID-19 measures in the last 24 hours.

A Police spokesperson told CNA that a total of 2,262 checks were carried out in the last 24 hours ending at 6:00 local time across the government-controlled areas.

In Nicosia, the Police carried out 645 checks reporting one individual and two shop owners, in Limassol 260 checks were carried out with 8 individuals and two shop owners reported, in Larnaca 2 individuals and another shop owner were reported following 520 checks, in Pafos 4 individuals were reported after 76 checks, in Famagusta 364 checks were carried out with 7 individuals reported, while 166 checks were made in Morphou with no fines issued.

Fully vaccinated adults in Cyprus reach 76%

Fully vaccinated adults in Cyprus have reached 76% whereas 80% of the adults got their 1st dose of the Covid vaccine according to figures up until September 13, released Tuesday by the Health Ministry.

Ministry expects that in the next couple of weeks 80% of the population will have concluded its vaccination scheme. The Ministry said that the campaign continues in various levels to meet the concerns of the public about vaccines, using scientific data.

Cyprus and Sweden agree to enhance bilateral relations further

House President Annita Demetriou and Sweden’s Ambassador Anders Hagelberg discussed ways to further enhance bilateral relations.

In a meeting on Tuesday, Demetriou thanked Sweden for its contribution to the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus and the country’s contribution in solving the Cyprus problem.

At the same time, Ambassador Hagelberg reconfirmed the firm position of principle Sweden maintains regarding the UN resolutions on Cyprus.
