A total of 117 new COVID-19 cases announced on Tuesday, no deaths reported, 84 patients in hospital

A total of 117 new coronavirus cases were detected on Tuesday, while no deaths of COVID-19 patients were reported, according to a press release issued by Cyprus` Health Ministry. The positivity rate is 0.23%.

The total number of deaths remains at 552, while COVID-19 cases since the beginning of the pandemic amount to 120,020.

Currently 84 COVID-19 patients are treated in hospital. The situation of 34 of them is critical, while 74.72% of those hospitalised have not been vaccinated.

Eleven post-COVID patients who ceased to be contagious continue to be treated in hospital and are intubated in a critical condition due to COVID-19 at Intensive Care Units.

A total of 51,973 tests were conducted on Tuesday using the PCR method (5,342) and antigen rapid tests (46,631).

Justice Minister highlights justice reform and fight against corruption as priorities at meeting with EU Commissioner

Cyprus Justice and Public Order Minister, Stephi Dracos, has highlighted that the bills on justice reform and the legal framework against corruption which are before Parliament constitute a priority for the Ministry, during a meeting she had on Tuesday, in Nicosia, with EU Home Affairs Commissioner, Ylva Johansson.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry, on her part the EU Commissioner focused on issues related to police cooperation, EUROPOL`s role, information sharing systems of member states on police and judicial issues, as well as issues related to children`s sexual abuse on the internet.

As it is noted, during the meeting the Minister presented the goals and the vision of the Ministry and said that voting of the bills on justice reform and the legal framework against corruption constitutes a priority.

Cyprus has taken significant steps in managing asylum applications, EU Commissioner says

Ylva Johansson, European Commissioner for Home Affairs, has noted that Cyprus has taken significant steps in managing asylum applications, adding that there is a possibility of further EU support.

She was speaking during a meeting with House of Representatives President, Annita Demetriou, on Tuesday, in the context of a one-day visit she paid Cyprus.

Demetriou referred to the Cyprus problem and condemned increasing Turkish provocations, in particular as regards the fenced-off part of Turkish occupied Famagusta, known as Varosha, and underlined the Greek Cypriot side’s readiness for an immediate resumption of Cyprus talks, on the basis of international law, the relevant UN Security Council resolutions and EU principles and values, a parliament press release says.

Percentage of people employed in the field of sport in Cyprus above EU average

The percentage of people employed in the field of sport in Cyprus passed the EU’s average in 2020 compared to the 2015 numbers, according to Eurostat, the EU’s statistical service.

The share of people working in sport in Cyprus increased from 0.5% in 2015 to 0.9% in 2020. In the EU, the average percentage rose from 0.6% in 2015 to 0.7% in 2020.

In 2020, 1.3 million people were employed in the field of sport in the EU, accounting for 0.7% of total employment. The EU countries with the highest share of people working in the field of sport were Sweden (1.6%), Finland (1.4%), Spain and the Netherlands (both 1.0%).

Between 2015 and 2020, employment in sport rose on average by 1.6% each year, compared with an 0.8% increase for total employment.

Cypriot company among gold winners of the EU Product Safety Award

Cypriot company Safe.T.First was awarded the EU Product Safety Award for protecting the safety of vulnerable consumer groups, in the SMEs category.

The award was presented to the company during an online ceremony on Tuesday, for promoting pool safety with a range of affordable, secure, and easy-to-use fences.

Eleven companies from eight different countries were celebrated for their innovations and investments to protect consumers, in separate categories for SMEs and large companies.

The awards focus on two aspects of innovation: protecting vulnerable consumer groups and the use of new technologies to enhance consumer safety. This is the second edition of the awards, which are given out every two years.

Cyprus Composite Leading Economic Index continues to grow with a slight slowdown in August

The Cyprus Composite Leading Economic Index (CCLEI) recorded a year-over-year increase of 10.8% in August 2021, reaching a level of 114.1, after year-over-year increases of 11.2% in July and 11.7% in June.

According to a Hellenic Bank’s press release, the CCLEI continues to record positive year-over-year growth rates in July and August 2021, albeit somewhat weaker.

More specifically, according to preliminary data in August, a positive effect on the CCLEI and domestic economic activity is still exerted by tourist arrivals, which present a relatively good tourist depiction in August amid a 4th wave of the pandemic, as well as the volume of retail sales.

Canada’s High Commissioner reconfirms support to Cyprus’ sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity

The High Commissioner of Canada to Cyprus, based in Athens, Mark Gregory Allen, has reconfirmed his country`s position of principles in favour of the sovereignty, the independence and the territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus, during a meeting he had on Tuesday with the House of Representatives President, Annita Demetriou.

According to a press release issued by the Parliament, during the meeting the very good relations between Cyprus and Canada, which are based on common principles and values were noted, while Demetriou expressed gratitude for the long standing stance of principles which Canada maintains on the Cyprus problems and efforts to solve it according to the international law and the UN relevant resolutions.

Cypriot students below EU average in learning two or more foreign languages

Cyprus is one of the countries in the European Union with the lowest percentage of pupils in upper secondary general education that studied two or more foreign languages in 2019, according to data from Eurostat, the EU’s statistical service.

The percentage of students in upper secondary education learning two or more languages in Cyprus in 2019 was 38%, while the EU average was at 59%. Cyprus had a higher percentage after Spain, Italy, Ireland, Portugal and Greece.

European Commissioner hopes to find common ground with Turkey regarding irregular arrivals towards Cyprus

European Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson said she hopes to find common ground with Turkey regarding the irregular arrivals especially towards Cyprus and Italy in her forthcoming visit to Turkey in two weeks.

Replying to a question on the different EU policy towards Belarus and Turkey regarding migration, while paying a visit in Cyprus, the Commissioner said that there are significant differences with Lukashenko and Belarus and the cooperation the EU needs to have with Turkey. As she said Lukashenko can’t deal with EU sanctions and is acting in desperation importing people with the only purpose to push them in the EU and Lukashenko is not a partner that the EU is ready to cooperate with.
