Cyprus reports 117 new Covid cases on Tuesday with no new deaths and 94 patients hospitalised

Cyprus reported on Tuesday 117 new COVID-19 cases out of 53,935 tests, while no deaths were reported in the last 24 hours. The. positivity rate fell at 0.22%. Total tally of the infections since the beginning of the pandemic raised to 119,230.

At the same time 94 patients are treated in public hospitals of whom 39 in serious condition. In a press release the Ministry of Health says that 73.41% of people treated in hospitals are not vaccinated. Also 10 post-COVID patients, who are no longer infectious, continue to be treated in ICUs intubated and in a serious condition.

Total deaths since the beginning of the pandemic amount to 548, of which 349 or 64% are men and 199 or 36% women with, a mean age of 76.3 years.

?fforts to attract investors should not link to terminated Cyprus Investment Program, says Interior Minister

Interior Minister of Cyprus Nicos Nouris urged on Tuesday land development companies to avoid advertisements that refer to or imply that the efforts to attract investors lead to a new Cyprus Investment Program, reiterating that the message from the EU as regards the naturalisations was clear and that the acquisition of a European passport should only take place when the person is related to the Member State and is not based solely on investments.

The Minister, who addressed the 15th Land Development Conference in Nicosia, stressed that the government has the intention of fully respecting this position.

He said that when the program was cancelled, around 1,147 applications were pending and Cyprus sent a letter to the European Commission informing it that all of them have been reviewed.

Eurostat: 88% of Cypriots aged 20-24 had at least an upper secondary level of education, 84% in the EU

The share of the EU population aged 20 – 24 that has had at least an upper secondary level of education rose by 7% in 2020 compared to 2002, according to Eurostat, the European Union’s statistical office.

This percentage increased from 77% in 2002 to 84% in 2020. The percentage of Cypriots between 20 – 24 that have attained at least an upper secondary level of education in 2020 was at 77%

The three regions that recorded the highest share of young people aged 20-24 years with at least an upper secondary level of education were all Greek: Thessalia and Ipeiros (both 99%) followed closely by Dytiki Makedonia (98%).

Parliament should give priority to legislative reforms on equality, diversity and integration says House President

President of the House of Representatives Annita Demetriou said that Parliament recognizes and should prioritize the need of legislative reforms on issues of equality, diversity and integration, speaking in the first public debate organized by Cyprus University of Technology, in the context of the “Limassol Week” and the Meeting of the Rectors of the Alliance of the Eight European Universities, for the establishment of a “European University of Technology – EUt +”.

Refugee policy expenditure to rise to 91 million euros in 2021, says Interior Minister

The state’s expenditure as far as refugee policy is concerned will rise to 91 million euros, says Interior Minister

Interior Minister Nikos Nouris told the House Refugee Committee that expenditure increased from 52 million euros in 2017 to what is expected to be 91 million in 2021.

Attending the first session of the committee since this year’s parliamentary elections, he explained to members of the parliament the policies which the government is following and how it is handling individual problems that arise.

Despite the fact that the country was faced with an unprecedented economic situation due to the pandemic, Nouris explained, expenditure was significantly high for refugee policy, both as regards development activity and subsidies given in the framework of the refugee housing policy.
