Third dose vaccinations for 475 people aged 86 and over and 569 health workers on Wednesday

A total of 475 individuals, who are 86 years old and over, were vaccinated on Wednesday island-wide, at walk-in vaccination centres, with the third dose of the vaccine against COVID-19, Cyprus Health Ministry has announced.

Moreover, a total of 569 health workers of the private sector were vaccinated with the third dose at vaccination centres in all districts.

Vaccinations with the booster dose also continued at homes for the elders, for vulnerable groups of the population and employees of the State Health Services Organisation hospitals.

Cyprus reports 106 new Covid cases on Wednesday, 89 patients hospitalized, no deaths reported

Cyprus reported on Wednesday 106 new COVID-19 cases out of 50,579 tests, while no deaths were reported for a second consecutive day. The positivity rate stood at 0.21%. Total tally of the infections since the beginning of the pandemic stood at 119,336.

At the same time 89 patients are treated in public hospitals of whom 40 in serious condition. In a press release the Ministry of Health says that 74,16% of people treated in hospitals are not vaccinated. Also 10 post-COVID patients, who are no longer infectious, continue to be treated in ICUs intubated and in a serious condition.

Total deaths since the beginning of the pandemic remained unchanged at 548, of which 349 or 64% are men and 199 or 36% women with a mean age of 76.3 years.

Government working on a Cyprus solution, official says

The government has been working on a solution of the Cyprus problem and vindication of our national goals, Secretary of the Council of Ministers Theodosis Tsiolas said on Wednesday, addressing the inauguration ceremony of the new offices of the Makrasyka Community Council in Oroklini.

Tsiolas assured that “the government has not stopped working on and seeking the creation of the right conditions for a solution of the Cyprus problem and vindication of our national goals. It responsibly and calmly conveys, both to our partners in the European Union and to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, the message for a just solution that will reunite our island, without occupation troops”.

Cyprus third in EU in most cars per inhabitant list in 2019, Eurostat says

Cyprus held the third place in motorisation rates among the EU member states in 2019, following Luxembourg and Italy, according to data provided by Eurostat, the European Union’s statistical service.

Luxembourg was significantly ahead with 681 passenger cars per thousand inhabitants, followed by Italy in second place, with 663 cars per thousand inhabitants, Cyprus (645 cars per thousand inhabitants)

Cyprus was closely followed by Finland and Poland (both with 642 cars per thousand inhabitants).

Eurostat notes that in the case of Luxembourg, the figure on passenger cars per inhabitant may be influenced by persons commuting for work from other countries (cross-border workers) using company cars registered in the country.

We expect great things from Cyprus leaders but they need help, and citizens must get engaged and contribute to efforts for a sustainable solution to the Cyprus problem, the UN Secretary-General`s Special Representative in Cyprus, Elizabeth Spehar has said.

Addressing a reception on Wednesday, in view of the completion of the UN Youth Champions Programme for Environment and Peace 2021, organized together with the British Council and the COOPower project, and to also celebrate the International Day of Peace, Spehar said that in order to solve the Cyprus problem in a sustainable way “we need all citizens to pinch in and certainly we believe that young people in particular have a crucial role to play.”

Cyprus’ gold medallist Karolina Pelendritou hopes to see more children become involved in the Paralympic movement

Cypriot Paralympic Gold medallist Karolina Pelendritou said she hoped that in the next years she will see the Paralympic movement grow and evolve and children with disabilities will become more involved with sport and that society in Cyprus will consider them as equal.

In an interview with CNA, she said that there is still discrimination towards Paralympic athletes. She also said that she plans to take part in the Paris Paralympic Games.

Almost 46% of Cypriot workers can’t afford to pay heating, highest percentage in the EU

Cyprus is first among the European Union member states when it comes to the percentage of people who can’t afford to heat their homes despite having work, according to data analysed on behalf of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC).

According to the findings, which were published as energy prices rocket across Europe, 15% of Europe’s working poor won’t be able to turn on the heating – equivalent to 2,713,578 people across Europe.

The percentage of workers that cannot afford to pay for heating are at 45.

President of Cyprus discusses Iraq’s participation in trilateral mechanism with Iraqi counterpart

President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades met with the President of Iraq Barham Salih, on Wednesday in New York, on the sidelines of the 76th UN General Assembly. A press release by the Presidency says that during the meeting, the two heads of state discussed, among other things, regional developments, the current situation in the Cyprus issue, bilateral relations, EU-Iraq relations, as well as the prospect of Iraq`s participation in the tripartite cooperation mechanism of Cyprus, Greece and Jordan, with the participation of Egypt.

President Anastasiades noted Cyprus` interest in stability and security in Iraq, which affects neighbouring countries and the wider region.

Energy Minister says financing of companies should be facilitated to avoid losing EU funds

Cyprus’ Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry Natasa Pilides spoke on Wednesday of the need to create the right environment to facilitate the financing of companies, in order to avoid losing the relevant European funds.

She was addressing a workshop on financial opportunities in business, organised by the Ministry.

The Minister referred to European resources of more than €200 million for the seven years 2021-2027 intended for the development of business competitiveness.

Cyprus Olympic Committee presents positive review of Cypriot athletes’ participation in Tokyo Olympics

The Cyprus Olympic Committee presented a positive review of Cypriot athletes’ participation and performance in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, during a press conference on Wednesday.

Cyprus team at the Tokyo Olympic Games included 15 athletes, who despite giving their best performances, returned home without a medal. Cyprus’ sole Olympic medal to date came in sailing at the 2012 Games in London, where Pavlos Kontides won silver in the men`s Laser.
