Scientist expresses concern over increase in COVID cases with schools open

Professor of Microbiology/Molecular Virology at the University of Nicosia Medical School, Petros Karayiannis has expressed concern over the increase in the number of COVID-19 cases since schools opened last week.

He told the Cyprus News Agency, on Tuesday that there is a concern because children who have not been vaccinated go to school and no PCR or rapid test is performed. Therefore all self-protective measures and protocols regarding children should be implemented, he remarked.

Cyprus authorities report two deaths and 126 new Covid cases

Cyprus` health authorities announced on Tuesday the death of two men from COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 534, and 103 new cases out of 28,536 tests. The positivity rate stands at 0.44%. At the same time, 103 people are being treated in hospitals across the island, 43 of whom in a serious condition.

In a press release the Ministry of Health said that 79.62% of patients with COVID-19 who are treated in hospitals have not been vaccinated. Nine post-COVID patients who are no longer infectious, continue being treated in ICUs, while being intubated, in a serious condition, it is added.

The deaths announced concern a 73-year-old man, who passed away at Paphos General Hospital and a 70-year-old man, who passed away in Nicosia General Hospital. Both died on September 13.

Total deaths attributed to COVID-19 are 534, of whom 343 or 64%

Members of the Congress send letter to UNSG on Varosha

Members of the Congress on Monday sent a letter to United Nations Secretary – General (UNSG) António Guterres regarding Turkey’s provocations in the fenced area of Varosha.

The letter was sent at the initiative of Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney, co-chair and co-founder of the Congressional Caucus on Hellenic Issues, Congressman Gus Bilirakis, co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on Hellenic Issues and Congressman Chris Pappas, member of the Congressional Caucus on Hellenic Issues, joined by 16 more members of the Congress.

EU not in favor of a two-state solution in Cyprus, EU Ambassador to Turkey tells CNA

The EU is clearly not in favor of a two-state solution in Cyprus, said Nikolaus Meyer-Landrut, Head of the EU Delegation in Turkey, adding that during his contacts with the Turkish leadership, the body of work are EU conclusions and decisions.

The EU Ambassador also said that Turkey’s role in the de-escalation of tension in the Eastern Mediterranean needs to be acknowledged and that it may now be possible to see progress in relations with the EU.
