Larnaca Port and Marina project the biggest project ever in Cyprus, Minister says

The Larnaca Port and Marina project, amounting to 1.2 billion is the island’s largest infrastructure project of its kind, announced Transport, Communications and Works Minister Yiannis Karousos.

The Minister made the remarks during his visit to Larnaca Port where he was informed on the Master Plan and the progress in the joint port and marina development.

It is a project that the President of the Republic announced and is a priority, the Minister said, noting that it will benefit not only the town and Larnaca district but also the whole of Cyprus.

The Cypriot-Israeli consortium company Kition Ocean Holdings was the winner of the government’s international public tender procurement process and are currently tasked with completing the redevelopment project.

Cyprus President expresses readiness for a trilateral meeting in New York

Cyprus President, Nicos Anastasiades, said on Thursday that he was ready to have a meeting with the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, and Turkish Cypriot leader, Ersin Tatar, later this month in New York, where he will be flying to participate in the UN General Assembly.

Invited to comment on statements by Tatar that the reason that the UNSG`s Special Envoy, Jane Holl Lute, did not come to Cyprus was not the refusal of the Turkish Cypriot side to meet her, but Lute did not visit the island for her own reasons, the President said that “Lute is in contact by phone with the negotiator, conveys to him her positions and such an issue was never raised.”

Anastasiades said that “what was initially planned was for her to probably visit Cyprus with her husband for vacations, and also hold meetings during her presence here.

Commission announces disbursement of €157 million for Cyprus from Recovery Facility

The European Commission announced on Thursday morning the disbursement of 157 million euros to Cyprus in pre-financing, as part of the funds and loans to be provided under the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF).

The Commission notes that the pre-financing is equivalent to 13% of the funds allocated to Cyprus. This pre-financing will help to kick-start the implementation of the crucial investment and reform measures outlined in Cyprus’ recovery and resilience plan.

Progress in preventing illegal immigration, Cyprus Interior Minister tells MPs

Cyprus` Interior Minister Nicos Nouris told MPs on Thursday that progress has been achieved in preventing illegal immigrants from arriving to Cyprus.

Nouris, who was briefing the parliamentary committee of interior, said that Cyprus ranks first in the EU in migrant inflows but that it has managed to stop illegal immigrants from coming to Cyprus under the guise of studying and from performing fraudulent marriages. Through these schemes 2,000 to 2,500 immigrants would arrive on the island every year, he added.

Total sales of industrial products in Cyprus was up by 8.4% in 2019

Total sales of industrial commodities of local production in Cyprus reached €3,514.4 million in 2019 compared with €3,242.9 million in 2018, recording an increase of 8.4%, the Statistical Service said Thursday.

The three highest – selling products in terms of value were pharmaceutical products with €284.4 million, fresh bakery and confectionery products with €259.0 million and halloumi cheese with €245.0 million.

The sales of some products from local industrial units in 2019 were as follows: 36.8 thousand tonnes of halloumi cheese worth of €245.0 million, 64.6 million litres of pasteurised milk and fresh cream worth €78.2 million, 64.3 thousand tonnes of fresh fruit juice worth €40.4 million, prepared meat products worth €43.1 million, fresh bakery and pastry products worth €259.0 million, 40.4 million litres of beer worth €47.2 million, wines worth €30.3 mi

Trade deficit rises in June and first seven months of 2021

The trade deficit rose by €82.4 mn in June, to €615.4 mn from €533 mn in the same month of 2020, figures released Thursday by the Statistical Service showed. Preliminary figures revealed an increase in trade deficit of €615.5 mn between January and July.

In June 2021 total imports of goods (from EU Member States and from third countries) amounted to €761.2 mn compared with €668.9 mn in June 2020, recording an increase of 13.8%.

Exports of domestically produced products, including stores and provisions, in June 2021 rose to €145.8 mn from €135.9 mn in June 2020, recording an increase of 7.3%.

Domestic exports of industrial products in June 2021 increased to €138.3 mn from €126.1 mn in June 2020, whilst domestic exports of agricultural products in June 2021 fell to €6.1 mn from €8.1 mn in the same month of 2020.
