Cyprus President announces Cabinet reshuffle ‘early next week’ after Justice Minister resigns

Cypriot Minister of Justice and Public Order, Emily Yiolitis, resigned Thursday pointing out that continuous press reports about her possible replacement after a Cabinet reshuffle and her presentation as the “weakest link” of the government are making her presence at the Ministry unproductive and particularly problematic.

In a resignation letter to the President of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades, Yiolitis says that she was surprised that the President told her that her presence affects the image of the government and of himself, when he called him eralier on Thursday to ask him about the reports.

“To my great surprise you conveyed to me that my presence in the Cabinet affects the image of the government but also yours.

I will convey to UN Secretary-General our side’s readiness to participate in a new dialogue, says President

President of Cyprus ?icos Anastasiades said on Thursday that in the upcoming meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, in Brussels, he will convey the readiness of the Greek Cypriot side to participate in a new dialogue, based on the UN resolutions, the 2014 joint statement and the convergences achieved so far in the Cyprus talks.

Speaking to the press before an event organized to honor the political convicts of the EOKA liberation struggle, in Nicosia, the President said that we are ready for a new dialogue that will lead to a viable and functional solution that does not deviate from the principles of the United Nations.

Replying to a question as to what he will tell the UNSG during the meeting, the President said that he will tell him that everything should move within the framework of the UN resolutions and his mandate.

President Anastasiades and new Israeli Prime Minister hold telephone conversation

President of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades, held on Thursday a telephone conversation with the new Prime Minister of Israel, Naftali Bennett, congratulating him on the formation of a coalition government and the assumption of his duties.

According to a written statement by Government Spokesman Kyriakos Koushos, the Prime Minister of Israel thanked President Anastasiades and expressed his readiness to cooperate with him and the people of Cyprus to further strengthen the already excellent relations between the two countries.

During the telephone conversation, President Anastasiades expressed satisfaction with the excellent level of cooperation between Cyprus and Israel as well as his readiness to cooperate with the new Government of Israel, to further strengthen the strategic relationship that the two states have developed in recent years.

US and Cyprus strengthen military and security cooperation through IMET [VIDEO]

The United States and the Republic of Cyprus made another important step in strengthening their international cooperation and partnership in the area of military training and security. On Thursday the US welcomed in their Embassy, in Nicosia, the first 8 officers from the National Guard, who are going to participate in the International Military Education and Training (IMET) program, offered by the US to Cyprus.

Speaking during a ceremony at the Embassy, US Ambassador Judith Garber noted that it was just a year ago that the US announced that the Republic of Cyprus will become the newest partner in IMET.

Cyprus President to meet with UN Secretary-General on June 25 in Brussels

Cyprus President, Nicos Anastasiades, will hold a meeting with the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, on June 25 in Brussels, on the sidelines of the European Council meeting that will take place in the Belgian capital on June 24-25 and to which Guterres has been invited.

CNA has learned that the meeting has been scheduled to take place on June 25 at 10.30 am. This is the first meeting between Anastasiades and Guterres since the 5+1 informal meeting on Cyprus that took place in Geneva at the end of April.

They are expected to discuss the current situation as regards the Cyprus problem and the prospects of convening a new informal meeting on Cyprus, given the Turkish position in favour of a two-state solution and the moves of the Turkish side in the fenced off city of Famagusta. Cyprus reports 65 new COVID cases Thursday, 41 people in hospitals

Cyprus Health Ministry announced on Thursday 65 new covid cases and 41 hospitalizations. The total number of deaths remains at 374 and the number of cases since the pandemic broke out stands at 73,444. Today`s cases were detected from a total of 34,157 tests (rapid and PCR) bringing positivity rate to 0.19%.

From the 374 deaths 251 are male (67%), and 123 female (33%) and the median age is 77 years.

From the 41 patients in hospitals, 15 are in serious condition or in an ACU. In particular, from the 15 the 8 are intubated, one is in an ICU and 6 in ACU.

From the 34,157 tests, 6,903 were done with PCR method and 27,254 were rapid tests.

The new cases were detected as follows: 8 from 137 tests done in the framework of contact tracing, 14 from 3,552 tests done at airports, 11 from 2,937 tests done on private initiative, 2 from 208 s

Assets under Management of Collective Investments at €9.8bn recording a 14% increase

The value of Total Assets Under Management reached €9.8bn in the 1st quarter of 2021, recording a 14% increase over the 4th quarter of the 2020, according to the latest Quarterly Statistics bulletin published by the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC).

Based on the statistics for the 1st quarter of 2021, CySEC has 284 Management Companies and Undertakings of Collective Investments (UCIs) under its supervision, of which 196 have operations.

ESM calls on Cyprus to follow through with reforms

ESM issues advice on Cyprus to follow through with the “implementation of envisaged reforms in the areas of local government, justice, and public administration”, that “would invigorate Cyprus’ economic potential”, in its annual report, endorsed today by its` board of governors, that convened earlier today in Luxemburg, where the Eurogroup will take place this month.

ESM notes on its Cyprus` chapter in the report that `the economic outlook for the Cypriot economy depends on the duration of the pandemic and continued policy support”.

“A persistent health crisis weighing on external and domestic demand would threaten businesses and employment, particularly in the tourism sector”, ESM notes.

Our goal is to further develop Cyprus’ shipping sector, Deputy Minister for Shipping Vassilis Demetriades told CNA on the occasion of the 5th Annual Cyprus Shipping Forum, that took place Thursday.

The digital Forum, entitled “Cyprus Shipping –At the Forefront of Industry Developments Enhancing Competitiveness in a Fast Changing World” was hosted by Capital Link.

Speaking at the Forum, the Deputy Minister referred to the fact that for almost 25-30 years now, Cyprus is constantly growing in the field of shipping, and pointed out that while in the past Cyprus was only considered as a quality flag and a shipping center, today it goes further than that with a vision.

Cyprus participates in Europol operations aiming to combat human trafficking

Cyprus participated in joint operational activities at European level to combat human trafficking and labour exploitation that were coordinated by Europol, which took place between May 31 and June 6.

According to a Cyprus police press release one operation was conducted in Cyprus during, which one individual was arrested and eight possible victims of human trafficking were identified. The case has been filed in Nicosia District Court.
