Justice Minister called for more active cooperation and solidarity between EU members states

The Minister of Justice and Public Order Emily ?iolitis called for more active cooperation and solidarity with the Member States at the forefront and the first arrival in the protection of the EU`s external borders, in her intervention to the works of the JHA EU, Justice and Home Affairs Council, which took place in Luxembourg yesterday and today.

During the exchange of views on the Commission`s new Schengen Strategy (which aims to reform the Schengen area, making it more functional and resilient to current challenges), the Minister stressed that “Cyprus, although not still in the Schengen area, has a great interest in creating a strong Schengen system “.

Cyprus police carried out 3,457 checks for COVID measures violations reporting three individuals

Cyprus police handed out fines to three individuals for not abiding with the measures in place to curb the spread of COVID-19.

A police spokesperson told that 3,457 checks were carried out in the last 24 hours, as a result of which three individuals were reported.

In Nicosia police carried out 649 checks reporting one person, in Limassol 438 checks with no fines, 648 in Larnaka reporting one person, 500 in Pafos with one fine, 538 in Famagusta with no violations found, and 330 in Morfou also with no violations.

Cyprus Minister calls on EU counterparts to expedite evaluation process for Schengen candidate countries

Minister of Justice and Public Order of the Republic of Cyprus Emily Yiolitis called on EU counterparts, on Tuesday, to expedite and intensify the accession evaluation process for Schengen candidate countries, such as Cyprus, while intensifying police cooperation and security management across the entire block, at a doorstep statement arriving this morning at the Justice and Home Affairs Council, focusing today on Home Affairs, that takes place in Luxembourg.

More specifically, the Minister stated that “one among many other important items on the agenda is how to build a more resilient, but at the same time, more inclusive Schengen area.”

More than 5,400 appointments booked by citizens aged 23-27, Portal opens Wednesday for 18-22 years

A total of 5,450 appointments were booked by citizens aged 23-27 years on Tuesday when the Vaccination Portal closed for all available slots. The Ministry of Health said that a total of 10,250 appointments were made available for the above age group.

On Wednesday morning at 730 the Portal will open for citizens aged 18-22 and will remain open until Thursday at 1730.

Figures made available show that by Monday 56,5% of the population got its 1st dose and 37,1% concluded its vaccination scheme.

Cyprus and CoE conference to agree on actions to address radical changes in media, CoE official tells

The Republic of Cyprus and the Council of Europe (CoE) co-organise 10 and 11 of June an online Ministerial Conference on «Artificial Intelligence – Intelligent Politics: Challenges and Opportunities for Media and Democracy».

President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades will address the Conference, while Minister of the Interior Nicos Nouris will preside over the meeting as Minister of the hosting country. Council of Europe’s Secretary General Marija Pejcinovic, and Foreign Affairs Minister of Hungary Péter Szijjártó, representing the Hungarian Presidency of the Committee of Ministers, will speak at the opening.

Cyprus reports one death and 60 new COVID-19 cases, 45 patients in hospitals

Cyprus reported on Tuesday one death and 60 new COVID-19 cases while the Ministry of Health announced that 45 patients are getting treatment in hospitals. The total number of deaths stand at 365 and the total cases since the pandemic broke out at 72,919. From the 45 citizens in hospitals, the 19 are in serious condition.

Today`s cases were detected from a total of 38,435 tests (rapid and PCR) and the positivity rate stands at 0,16%.

The deceased is a male 66 years old who passed away at the ICU of the Nicosia General Hospital. From the 365 deaths, 243 are male (67%) and 122 female (33%) and the median age is 78 years.

From the 19 people in serious condition in hospitals, 9 are intubated, 2 are in an ICU and 8 in ACU.
