Cyprus Health Minister informs President on his intention to step down

Cyprus Minister of Health Constantinos Ioannou conveyed his intention on Friday to leave the Ministry to President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades.

Ioannou made the remark when invited to comment on the possibility of him being removed in the framework of an imminent government reshuffle.

He said “I have already talked with the President and expressed my intention to step down”, when asked about it during a press conference of the Health Security Organisation on the occasion of second anniversary of the introduction of the General Health System.

Cyprus Health Ministry says 96% of new COVID-19 cases has not been vaccinated

The Ministry of Health has said that there is a very high percentage of unvaccinated COVID-19 cases between 18-30 years of age in the recent weeks but also cases which present more serious symptoms that required hospitalisation and urged young people to get vaccinated.

The Ministry said that only 3% of these cases have completed their vaccination while a 96% of the positive cases has not even received the first dose.

In addition, 80% of the cases which have symptoms have not been vaccinated while only two cases which developed symptoms had completed their vaccination regime.

Cyprus ?ealth Minister urges young people to get their vaccines

Health Minister Constantinos Ioannou urged young people on Friday to get their vaccines against COVID, pointing out that the new variants and particularly the Indian one, affect especially the younger citizens.

He also noted that the cases have dropped as citizens over 40 and 50 have been inoculated.

Speaking on the sidelines of a press conference for the 2 years of the national health scheme GeSY, the Minister said that according to the National Report that was published today, the cases in younger people have increased.

An overwhelming majority of GHS users satisfied with health system

An overwhelming majority of General Healthcare System (GHS) beneficiaries 82%, have said the level of services offered by the System are very satisfactory while an 80% believe that GHS has improved the quality of their lives.

According to a study conducted by IMR/University of Nicosia organisation, with a sample of 1,500 people registered in GHS from the total 892,100, an 83% are convinced that the introduction of GHS eradicated all inequalities as to the equal access to health services in the past while an 86% firmly believe that the focus of the System is the patient and quality of service.

We are proud for what we have achieved, despite the obstacles and the survey shows that the people acknowledge the benefits (of GHS) and have embraced it.

Ministry announces 76 new COVID-19 cases, 45 patients in hospitals, no deaths on Friday but their number is up by 4

The Ministry of Health announced on Friday 76 new coronavirus infections (positivity rate: 0.18%), while 45 patients are receiving treatment in hospitals.

No deaths were recorded in the last 24 hours. The number of deaths stands at 378, of whom 254 men or 67% and 124 women or 33%). Their median age is 77.

The Ministry notes that despite the fact that no deaths are announced, their total number is increased by four, since 4 more people died of COVID-19 in April and May and have been reported to the Health Monitoring Unit in the previous days.

Since the outbreak of the pandemic 73,520 people have been infected with the virus.

Out of the 45 patients who are receiving treatment, 18 are in a critical condition (10 of whom are intubated).

In the Famagusta General Hospital there are 10 patients, 17 are in the Nicosia

Cyprus President has successful spinal surgery, to be discharged Saturday

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades underwent a small spinal surgery on Friday and according to a written statement by Government Spokesperson Kyriacos Koushos, the operation was successful and the doctors are satisfied with his health condition.

The President, says the Spokesman, is feeling very well, will remain in hospital until tomorrow morning and then will be discharged.

Limassol, Ioannina and Haifa municipalities cooperate for Intercultural Cities Network

The Municipality of Limassol got the green light- together with the twinned municipalities of Ioannina (Greece) and Haifa (Israel) – for the promotion of equality, diversity and positive interaction in the cities members of the Intercultural Cities Network.

A press release by the Limassol Municipality says that the proposal, which was submitted in the framework of the Inter-City Grants 2021 of the Council of Europe, has been approved and will finance local actions, which will be implemented by the participating municipalities, members of the Network of Intercultural Cities.

It is added that the actions are designed to test, assess or implement policies, strategies, tools and methodologies, according to the policy model of Intercultural Cities.

Lute will not recommend another informal meeting unless she sees common ground, UN source tells CNA

The UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy on Cyprus, Jane Holl Lute, continues her consultations to see if there is any common ground to build on, a UN source has told CNA, noting that at the moment there is no common ground.

The same source noted that there is no requirement for the UNSG to hold another 5+1 informal meeting on Cyprus, adding that Lute will not recommend to him to convene another such meeting, unless she sees common ground to build on.

Cypriot Ministers discuss with Russian Deputy Minister the resumption of flights

Minister of Transport Yiannis Karousos and Deputy Minister for Tourism Savvas Perdios held on Friday a teleconference with Deputy Minister for Transport of Russia Dmitry Zverev focusing on the resumption of scheduled and chartered flights from Russia to Cyprus.

According to an official press release, during the teleconference, the Russian Deputy Minister explained that the competent authorities of the Russian Federation are gradually lifting the flight bans on the basis of specific epidemiological criteria. He also thanked the Republic of Cyprus for the inclusion of the Russian vaccine Sputnik in the list of vaccines approved by Cyprus.
