Cyprus and the Netherlands sign a Convention for the Elimination of Double Taxation and the Prevention of Tax Evasion

The Republic of Cyprus and the Kingdom of the Netherlands signed on Tuesday in Nicosia the Convention for the Elimination of Double Taxation with respect to Taxes on Income and the Prevention of Tax Evasion and Avoidance.

On behalf of the Republic of Cyprus the Convention was signed by Constantinos Petrides, Minister of Finance of the Republic of Cyprus and on behalf of the Kingdom of the Netherlands by Elke Merks-Schaapveld, Ambassador of The Netherlands to the Republic of Cyprus.

Speaking after the signing, Petrides said that the Agreement will ensure the tax handling of transactions between the two countries, providing stability and certainty to investors.

Losses in accommodation and food services continue, gains in information and communication in Cyprus

Information and communication services was the only sector which registered gains in the first quarter of 2021, while accommodation and food services continued to register significant losses as it was the sector bearing the brunt of the Covid pandemic.

According to data released by the Cyprus Statistical Service on Tuesday for the turnover value index in Services for the first quarter of 2021, the sector of information and communication registered annual growth of 4.9%, while accommodation and food service activities declined by 41.

Nicosia expected to receive €150 million by beginning of July once Recovery Fund is approved, FinMin says

Nicosia is expected to receive €150 million from the EU Recovery Fund once it has been approved around the end of June or beginning of July, Finance Minister Constantinos Petrides has said, adding that the government has already started going ahead with public tenders for a number of projects.

Petrides was replying to journalists questions, in statements after signing an Agreement for the Avoidance of Double Taxation between Cyprus and Holland, on Tuesday.

He said that the government has already started the implementation of the Recovery Fund and that public tenders have been published for some of the projects.

Cyprus reports 58 COVID cases, 66 patients in hospitals

Cyprus Health Ministry on Tuesday announced 58 new COVID cases from a total of 43,028 tests with the positivity rate to stand at 0,13%. The total cases since the pandemic broke out in Cyprus are 72,515 and the total deaths 360.

The number of patients in hospitals dropped to 66 of whom 27 are in serious condition.

From the 360 deaths 240 are male (67%), and 120 female (33%) and the median age is 78 years.

From the 27 patients in serious condition, 16 are intubated, 3 are in the ICU and 8 in ACU.

From the 43,028 tests, 5,963 were done with the PCR method and 37,065 were rapid tests.

Five from 92 samples taken in the framework of contact tracing, 4 from 2,324 tests at airports, 19 from 2,942 tests done on private initiative, 3 from 520 rapid tests done at private labs and phar

One of the biggest reforms in Cyprus is now a reality, says Health Insurance Organization on GHS two-year anniversary

Cyprus’ Health Insurance Organization (HIO) points out that one of the biggest social reforms since the establishment of the Republic of Cyprus is now a reality, in a press release on the occasion of the two-year anniversary of Cyprus’ General Health System (GHS).

The Organisation notes that all that time it has managed to overcome obstacles and adversity by delivering to the beneficiaries a human-centered health system with a social status.

It also says that after the first two years of operation, GHS has now more than 1,800 specialist doctors, 560 personal doctors, 190 pediatricians, 150 laboratories, 550 pharmacies, 50 hospitals and 1,800 other health professionals.

Deputy Minister of Tourism presents Cyprus’s latest Covid data in visit to London

The Deputy Minister of Tourism Savvas Perdios has been presenting the latest epidemiological data regarding the Covid pandemic in Cyprus to UK officials during a visit to London.

The Deputy Minister’s visit comes ahead of the first review of the UK Government’s ‘green list’ for international travel.

The updated list will come into force on Monday 7th June, with the announcement about which countries will be added to it expected by the end of this week, possibly Thursday.

National Health System a legacy for the next generations, Cyprus Health Minister tells CNA

Cyprus’ National Health System (GSH) in now on a path of no return and it constitutes a legacy for our children and the next generations, Health Minister Constantinos Ioannou told CNA, on Tuesday, on the occasion of the two-year anniversary of system.

Improvements in the system’s weaknesses are taking place all the time aiming to offer quality health services to all citizens, Ioannou noted.

“We are celebrating two years of GSH’s operation,” he said.

Cyprus Health Ministry publishes COVID-19 protocol for establishments offering food

Cyprus’ Ministry of Health has published a protocol which includes measures, to which establishments offering food should abide by, to contain COVID-19 in view of the resumption of operation of indoors spaces.

The protocol should be observed by restaurants, taverns, cafeterias, pubs, snack bars and bars, coffee shops, food services offered within shopping centers, hotels and other tourist businesses, kiosks or sports premises, cultural spaces and any premises which offer food.

In particular, people aged 12 and over are allowed to enter such premises provided they have a negative COVID-19 PCR or rapid antigen test taken in the previous 72 hours, or a COVID-19 vaccination certificate provided they have been vaccinated at least three weeks earlier, or proof that they were infected with the disease within the last six months.

Police book six individuals for violating measures against COVID-19

Cyprus police reported six individuals during the last 24 hours for breaching the measures against the spread of COVID-19, in the framework of 3,516 checks conducted island-wide.

A police spokesperson told CNA that 546 checks were carried out in Nicosia, where 2 individuals were fined, while in Limassol the police conducted 562 checks without reporting anyone.

In Larnaca the police carried out 426 checks, without also reporting anyone, while in Pafos they conducted 613 checks and booked one person.

Further relaxations of COVID-19 restrictions in place in Cyprus

Further easing of COVID19 restrictions are in place as from today due to the improved epidemiological picture in Cyprus.

For example, the number of people in home gatherings increases to a maximum of 20 people including permanent residents and minors.

Physical presence of persons in indoor areas, such as religious places of worship, casinos, conference and trade fair venues, theatres, amphitheatres and other performing arts venues is set at 50% of the capacity of each venue.
