New categorisation of countries announced by Ministry of Health

Cyprus’ Ministry of Health has published changes which come into effect on Thursday 24th June as regards the categorisation of countries based on new epidemiological risk assessment.

In a press release, the Ministry of Health said that from 14 June, with the new recommendation of the European Council, the criteria for categorisation of European countries have changed and can be found on the link below.

Cyprus records no new deaths, 67 new COVID-19 cases, 46 patients are in hospital

Cyprus recorded no new deaths due to COVID-19, 67 new cases were detected out of 21,250 tests on Monday, authorities announced, with the positivity rate standing at 0.32%. At the same time 46 patients with the disease are treated in hospital, 19 of whom in a serious condition.

The total number of deaths remains 378, 254 or 67% men and 124 or 33% women, with the median age of the deceased being 77. The number of COVID-19 cases reported since the outbreak of the pandemic is 73,710.

Forty six patients are in state hospitals across the island, 19 of whom in a serious condition, the Ministry of Health said in a press release. Ten are intubated in an ICU while one person is treated in an ICU but is breathing without the help of a ventilator. Another eight are in an ACU.

Meetings on Cyprus issue to start this week in search for common ground

Meetings are picking up from Tuesday on the Cyprus problem beginning with a new round of discussions between UN envoy Jane Holl Lute and President Nicos Anastasiades on Tuesday.

The President is also scheduled to have a meeting with UNSG Antonio Guterres later this week during which he will underline that efforts should concentrate within the framework of the agreed UN resolutions.

Lute arrives on Monday afternoon in Cyprus and early the next day she will hold a meeting with the UNSG`s Special Representative in Cyprus, Elizabeth Spehar.

Isolated thunderstorms warning issued for Cyprus

The Meteorological Service has issued a thunderstorm warning for mountainous and inland areas in Cyprus.

The thunderstorm warning comes on Pentecost (Kataklysmos) holiday and will remain in effect from midday until 1800 local time.

It said isolated thunderstorms which may be accompanied by hail are likely to affect mainly mountainous and inland areas. Shower rates may exceed 35mm per hour, it added.

The warning urges the public to take extra care in exposed areas like mountains, forests and open terrain, adding that disruption to outdoor activities is possible.

EU Foreign Affairs Council takes place in Luxembourg with participation of Cyprus FM

An EU Foreign Affairs Council takes place on Monday, in Luxembourg, with the participation of Cyprus’ Foreign Affairs Minister Nikos Christodoulides.

Christodoulides travelled to Luxembourg yesterday to take part in the meeting.

“In the course of the Council`s deliberations, the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Member States will discuss, under the Current Affairs item on the agenda, the EU`s relations with Turkey, Lebanon and Indonesia, following also the recent visits to the three countries by the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell,” a press release by the Foreign Affairs Ministry said on Sunday.

Police presence on roads to be heavy to avert problems from bank holiday weekend return

Police presence will be heavy on the road network on Monday as holidaymakers are returning home after the three-day respite due to the Pentecost holiday.

Increased traffic is expected in the afternoon at the main junctions of the island’s road network.

In a press release, Police said its force will be out on the roads to ensure the safe and hassle free return of everyone to their homes with increased staff on the main roads from coastal to mountain areas.

Borrell does not expect EUCO to go deeper into EU – Turkey relationship this week

EU High Representative Josep Borrell told the Press that he does not expect to European Council to go deeper into the EU – Turkey relationship, during his briefing after the end of the Foreign Affairs Council that convened this morning in Luxembourg.

In particular, the High Representative, who was replying to a relevant question, said that “about Turkey and Cyprus, I don`t expect the European Council to go deeper on the issue of Turkey relations, because it will be very much engaged on the Russia communication.”

And certainly, he added, “our relations with Turkey are very much influenced by the Cyprus issue.

Young Cypriot Judo athletes score great achievements in European championships

Cyprus athletes scored great achievements in international judo championships over the weekends at U21 and U18 levels.

Yiannis Antoniou took the silver medal at +90kgs at the Cadet (U18) European Cup 2021 at Porec, Croatia while in Sarajevo, Bosnia, in the Junior (21) European Cup 2021, Zanet Michaelidou took the bronze medal at the -78kgs.

At the -66kgs, Georgios Balarjishvili with four wins finished in the fifth position while at the -60kgs Petros Christodoulides, at the mere age of 16, competed against older athletes and took one win and the 9th position.

Cyprus promoted to European Athletics Team Championships 2nd League, ranks second in 3rd League Games

Cyprus was promoted to the Second League of the European Athletics Team Championships 3rd League after it ranked second in the 3rd League games which ended on Sunday in Limassol`s Tsirion Stadium.

The Cypriot athletes broke or came close to their personal records, managing to promote Cyprus to the second league for 2023 with 539 points.

After seven victories on the first day on Saturday, the athletes welcomed seven more wins and one pancyprian record, achieved in the 4x400m women’s relay with Thecla Alexandrou, Kalliopi Kountouri, Kalipso Stavrou and Eleni Artymata, finishing at 3:41.
