EU & US vow to work for sustainable de-escalation in the East. Med., refer to the international law of the sea

The EU and the USA are set to endorse a joint declaration during their Summit on Tuesday the 15th off June in Brussels, describing the basic principles and understanding “towards a renewed transatlantic partnership”, according to a draft text, tabled today at the COREPER obtained by CNA.

In the text the EU and the US endorse the aspiration “to vaccinate at least two thirds of the world’s population by the end of 2022” and “encourage more donors to make 2 billion vaccine doses available worldwide by late 2021.” In the same text the two sides “reject authoritarianism in all its forms around the globe, resisting autocrats’ efforts to create an environment that protects their rule and serves their interests, while undermining liberal democracies.

Conference on AI and Media an important milestone, Minister of Interior tells CNA

Minister of the Interior Nicos Nouris has said that the online Ministerial Conference that Cyprus will host this week on Artificial Intelligence and the Media will constitute an important milestone.

In statements to the Cyprus News Agency on the occasion of the Conference, co-organised with the Council of Europe, Nouris said that unfortunately due to the ongoing pandemic, the Conference could not be held in the host country, Cyprus, but noted that despite that, the online interest is there, due to the importance of the topics it will address.

The Conference, he said, will focus on issues that are of European and global interest and concern namely the impact of artificial intelligence on the freedom of expression and media freedom, as well as the challenges that arise.

Cyprus reports two deaths and 77 new COVID-19 cases, 43 patients in hospitals

Cyprus reported on Wednesday two deaths and 77 new COVID-19 cases while the Ministry of Health announced that 43 patients are getting treatment in hospitals. The total number of deaths stand at 367 and the total cases since the pandemic broke out at 72,996. From the 43 citizens in hospitals, the 16 are in serious condition.

Today`s cases were detected from a total of 39,124 tests (rapid and PCR) and the positivity rate stands at 0,20%.

The deceased are a 78 years old man and a 69 years old woman, who passed away at the ICU of the Nicosia General Hospital. From the 367 deaths, 244 are male (66%) and 123 female (34%) and the median age is 77.4 years.

From the 16 people in serious condition in hospitals, 8 are intubated, 2 are in an ICU and 6 in ACU.
