Johnson stresses to Erdogan importance of reaching Cyprus settlement through UN-led process

The UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the NATO Summit in Brussels today and stressed the importance of reaching a settlement in Cyprus through the UN-led process.

Downing Street said that Mr Johnson welcomed the de-escalation of tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean and stressed the importance of reaching a settlement in Cyprus through the UN-led process.

The two leaders also discussed the fight against coronavirus and their countries’ respective vaccine rollouts.

JRCC’s role crucial, one of most modern in Europe, Ministers says at inauguration ceremony

Minister of Defence, Charalambos Petrides described on Monday the role of the Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC) as crucial, noting that it is one of the most modern Centers in Europe.

The Minister of Defence and Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Yiannis Karousos, attended on Monday the inauguration ceremony of the new facilities of the JRCC in Larnaka.

In his address, Petrides noted that in recent years, the Republic of Cyprus has attributed great importance in the development of a reliable and capable Search and Rescue System, being fully aware of its obligations arising from the Conventions and Regulations of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), as well as from the exploitation of the resources within its Exclusive Economic Zone.

Cyprus-Romania express willingness to deepen cooperation in Diaspora issues

Presidential Commissioner Photis Photiou held on Monday a meeting with Deputy Minister of Diaspora of Romania, Oana Ursache.

According to a press release by the Presidency, this was the fifth meeting held after the signing of the Bilateral Memorandum of Cooperation on Diaspora Issues in December 2018. It adds that the expansion of the cooperation between the two countries on diaspora issues contributes significantly to the enhancement of the relations between Cyprus and Romania.

Cypriot President speaks with Greek Prime Minister ahead of his meeting with Erdogan

Cyprus’ President Nicos Anastasiades had a telephone conversation with Greece’s Prime Minister, in view of Kyriakos Mitsotakis meeting this afternoon with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

According to government sources, the President asked the Greek Prime Minister to convey to the Turkish President the position of the Cypriot side that Turkey should stop its actions in Varosha, Famagusta, which violate UN Security Council resolutions. He also asked him to convey that no solution is acceptable for the Cyprus issue other than that of the bi-zonal bi-communal federation, something that should be taken into account in case of a new informal five-party summit on the Cyprus issue.
