Inflation increased in July by 4%, the Statistical Service of Cyprus says.

According to a press release, in July 2021, the Consumer Price Index increased by 0,11 units and reached 102,50 units compared to 102,39 units in June 2021. In July 2021, the inflation increased by 4,0%.

For the period January-July 2021, the CPI increased by 1,0% compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.

As regards the economic origin, the largest changes when compared to the index of July 2020 were recorded in Electricity (33,9%) and Petroleum products (19,9%). In comparison to the index of the previous month, the largest change was monitored in Agricultural goods (4,9%).

Compared to July 2020, the largest changes were monitored in the categories Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels (12,7%) and Transport (10,1%).

Cyprus industrial turnover records significant annual increase in May

The Industrial Turnover Index of Cyprus recorded a significant annual increase in May.

According to the Statistical Service of Cyprus, in May 2021, the Industrial Turnover Index reached 140.2 units (base 2015=100), recording an increase of 17.8% compared to May 2020.

For the period January-May 2021, the index recorded an increase of 9.7% compared to the corresponding period of the previous year

In manufacturing, the Industrial Turnover Index for May 2021 reached 142.4 units, recording an increase of 12.6% compared to May 2020.

Increases were also noted in the sectors of mining and quarrying (10,0%), electricity supply (43,2%) and water supply and materials recovery (59.0%).

European Commission approves additional funding of 46.4 mn euro for Cyprus’ recovery

The European Commission announced on Thursday that it has approved additional funding of 2.7 bn euros to support the recovery of Spain, Italy and Cyprus.

The Commission said that it has approved the amendment of seven operational programs in Spain, Italy and Cyprus under the REACT-EU program, totalling 2.7 bn euros.

Cyprus will receive an additional amount of 46.4 mn euros under the operational program “competitiveness and sustainable development”, to support SMEs.

The REACT-EU package includes €55 billion of additional funds that will be made available to the 2014-2020 European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the European Social Fund (ESF) as well as the European Fund for Aid to the Most Deprived (FEAD). These additional funds will be provided in 2021-2022 from Next Generation EU and already in 2020 through a targeted revision to the cur

Cyprus reports 3 deaths from COVID and 580 new cases Thursday, 293 patients in hospitals

Cyprus Health Ministry on Thursday announced 3 deaths from COVID and 580 new cases out of a total of 36,141 tests (rapid and PCR). The positivity rate stands at 1,60% while 293 patients are in hospitals, of whom 96 in serious condition. According to the Ministry, 89.77% of the patients, were not vaccinated.

The total deaths since the pandemic broke out are 430 and the total number of cases rose to 104,469.

The deceased are a male 71 years old who passed away August 4th at the Larnaka General Hospital, and two females 88 and 85 years old. The 88-year-old died August 4th at the Limassol General Hospital and the 85-year-old passed away today at the Famagusta Reference Hospital. Health Minister urges everyone to get vaccinated, saying that young people are struggling in ICUs

Intensive Care Units (ICUs) in Cyprus’ public hospitals are full of COVID-19 cases and many of the non-covid cases are referred to the private sector, the Minister of Health Michalis Hadjipantelas and the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary Christina Yiannaki pointed out, during their visit to the walk-in vaccination centre that opened on Thursday at the University of Cyprus.

Michalis Hadjipandelas particularly noted the problem with unvaccinated young people who have families with small children, who are currently in ICUs. He said that a 46 – year – old with four minor children, a 42 – year – old with two children and a 40 – year – old with four children are currently treated in ICUs.

Military service offers sense of responsibility, Cyprus President tells young recruits

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades has told young recruits at the National Guard that the military service offers them the important sense of responsibility and pride which they will have for the rest of their lives.

In a message on Twitter, President Anastasiades, wished young recruits who were sworn in today, a good, creative and usuful military service.

Military service, he noted, “also offers something else, more important: a sense of responsibility and pride which they will have for their whole life!”

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.

Meteorology Department issues orange warning for extreme high temperature, Forest Department on red alert

The Meteorology Department has issued an orange warning for extreme high temperature.

It says that the warning is valid from 0100 until 1700 on Thursday. It notes that tonight the minimum temperature will fall to around 27 degrees inland and to 26 degrees in the northern coasts. On Thursday, the maximum temperature will reach around 43 degrees inland and 35 over the highest mountainous areas.

Meanwhile, the Cyprus Department of Forests said in a press release that it will remain on forest fires red alert readiness ‘for as long as it takes’ due to high temperatures.

It warns that even the slightest spark can lead to fire and urges everyone to avoid any actions or activities that might pose such a risk. It asks the public to cooperate with the department and if they see smoke or fire near or in a forest to call 1407 (Department of Forests) or

House President underlines need to maintain strong bonds with Greece and Egypt as part of trilateral cooperation

The importance of the strong bonds between Cyprus, Greece and Egypt were underlined by President of the House of Representatives Annita Demetriou who received on Wednesday a group of young people from Cyprus, Greece and Egypt who take part in the third phase of the “Nostos IV” Youth Programme, implemented in the framework of the Trilateral Cooperation of the three countries.

An official press release said that Demetriou stressed the significance of strong bonds between the three countries as well as the contribution of the tripartite cooperation in promoting the common goals of peace, stability and security in the Eastern Mediterranean.

This cooperation, she said, is even more necessary now, bearing in mind the intensified provocations, including the illegal Turkish actions in the fenced off area of Famagusta.

Eleni Artymata misses qualifying for women’s 400m finals, breaks Cyprus record

Eleni Artymata, Cyprus’ track and field sprint athlete, ranked 5th in the Women’s 400m semi finals on Wednesday in Tokyo’s 2020 Olympic Games with 50.80.

Although she did not qualify for the finals, Artymata’s effort was described as excellent after breaking her own record of 51.14 achieved in 2018.

Artymata started the race very strong and maintained her rhythm, finishing fifth, just shy of qualifying for the finals.

Speaking about her performance, she said she entered the race with the aim to enjoy it. Artymata said “my aim was to stay in the race from the very first metres. I believe I have achieved it. I did the best that I could do. I ran well, stayed in the race until the end”.

More than 5,300 appointments booked for vaccinations for 12 years and over

The Ministry of Health on Wednesday announced that a total of 5,366 appointments were booked for vaccinations for people 12 years and over from August 3rd until today at 1100 local time.

From these, 2,551 are for minors 12-17 years and 2,815 for adults. The biggest interest for the administration of the vaccines is shown for ages 14-15 as 1,301 appointments were booked from August 2nd until today.
