Red alert for risk of forest fires in place for Friday

Forestry Department announced that a “red alert” warning for risk of fire will continue to be in effect on Friday, urging the public to refrain from activities that may cause fire and to cooperate with the authorities.

According to the announcement, whoever sees smoke or fire inside or near forests should contact the nearest Forest Station or call the Forestry Department at 1407 or the Fire Service at 112.

It notes that lighting a fire without a permit is punishable with a fine and/or imprisonment, and that lighting a fire for cooking is only allowed in the specified areas at picnic sites.

Cyprus among 50 countries which issued joint statement on the situation of women and girls in Afghanistan

A press release issued Wednesday by the MFA says that the statement has been co-signed by Albania, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, European Union, Honduras, Guatemala, North Macedonia, New Zealand, Norway, Panama, Paraguay, Senegal, Switzerland, United Kingdom and United States of America.

“We are deeply worried about Afghan women and girls, their rights to education, work and freedom of movement.

Cyprus government denies claim that Afghan President was seeking asylum in Cyprus

The Cyprus government has denied a Turkish newspaper report about an application by Afghan President Ashraf Ghani for asylum in the Republic of Cyprus.

Government Spokesman, Marios Pelekanos, said in a written statement that “we would like to clarify that such a request has never been submitted to the Asylum Service of the Interior Ministry, nor to any of our embassies abroad.”

The Turkish newspaper Yeni Safak had claimed that Ghani had applied or was considering applying for asylum in Cyprus.

Commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces and Commander of JRCC discuss enhancement of cooperation

Commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces, General Joseph Aoun and Lieutenant Commander of Cyprus` Joint Rescue Cooperation Center Andreas Charalambides discussed on Thursday ways to enhance cooperation between Lebanon and Cyprus.

A press release by the JRCC says that General Aoun who is paying Cyprus a visit, had a meeting today with Lieutenant Commander Charalambides and they discussed ways to enhance the bilateral cooperation is the areas of search and rescue.

General Aoun who was accompanied by Chief of the National Guard General Staff, Demokritos Zervakis, was briefed about the updated role of the Center in the Eastern Mediterranean region.

OSCE delegation pays Cyprus a visit

A delegation by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) paid Cyprus a visit between 16-18 of August, in the framework of the Confidence Building Measures and Security provided by the Vienna Document of 2011.

According to a press release by the National Guard General Staff, the delegation, comprising Russian officers, visited National Guard facilities. The inspection, it is added, reaffirmed the excellent cooperation with the OSCE, as well as the compliance of the Republic of Cyprus, as a member state, with all obligations, which include ia the timely provision of information and active participation in military activities, seminars and conferences.

Any narratives blaming the Greek Cypriot side for the failure in Crans Montana are being refuted, Cyprus President, Nicos Anastasiades said on Thursday commenting on an interview by former Turkish Cypriot leader, Mustafa Akinci.

Moreover the President reiterated his determination and political will to contribute to the UNSG`s efforts for the resumption of Cyprus talks, but not based on the requirements set out by Turkish Cypriot leader, Ersin Tatar, and Turkey.

Anastasiades said that Mustafa Akinci`s interview with Yeni Duzen newspaper is quite revealing both as regards Turkey`s long-standing objectives and the ways that led to the failure of the Conference on Cyprus in Crans Montana.

Chief of Lebanon’s armed forces pays official visit to Cyprus

Chief of Lebanon`s armed forces Joseph Aoun is paying an official visit to Cyprus on August 18-19 accompanied by a three-member delegation at the invitation of the Chief of the National Guard, Lieutenant General Demokritos Zervakis.

According to a press release issued by Cyprus National Guard General Staff, Aoun will visit on Thursday the Search and Rescue Coordinating Centre and the air force base “Andreas Papandreou”, where he will have the opportunity to be briefed about their mission, operation and potentials.

Aoun was officially welcomed on Wednesday during a ceremony at the National Guard General Staff headquarters.

Tourists from new markets expected in Cyprus in coming months, Perdios tells CNA

Tourist arrivals in August and September are expected to be at the same level as in July and maybe slightly higher, Deputy Minister for Tourism Savvas Perdios has told the Cyprus News Agency. Perdios said that new tourism markets will come to the front in the coming months and in 2022.

“It is expected that August and September will be around the same level as in July and hopefully a little better because of the British who have just started coming.

Ministry of Health announces death of three patients to COVID19, 208 in hospitals, 420 new infections

The Ministry of Health announced on Thursday the death of three people to COVID19, while 208 patients are receiving treatment in hospitals, 85 of whom in a serious condition.

It also announced 420 new coronavirus infections, bringing the total number of cases since the outbreak of the pandemic to 110,518. The positivity rate stands at 0.87%.

The three deceased were a 68 year old woman and two men, 63 and 88 years of age. They all passed away on the 18th of August.

Since the pandemic began, 301 men and 169 women died of COVID19 in Cyprus. Their median age is 77.

Of those hospitalised, 82.22% are not vaccinated. Out of the 85 patients who are in a critical condition, 45 are intubated.

In addition, 14 post COVID patients are still in hospitals intubated.

In the Famagusta General Hospital there are 51 patients

Number of COVID patients in ICUs remains high but stable, SHSO says

Cyprus` State Health Services Organisation (SHSO) said Thursday that the number of COVID19 patients in hospitals in the last days remains stable and there is even some reduction in their number, adding that on the other hand, the number of COVID and post COVID patients in the Intensive Care Units remains high but stable.

It says that both the management and the operational team are in cooperation with all the directorates of the Organisation and are taking the necessary measures for availability of beds, based on the action plan prepared at the beginning of the pandemic.

In addition, it is pointed out that preparations have been done ahead of autumn.
