Cyprus reports 3 deaths from COVID and 446 new cases Monday, 278 hospitalised

Cyprus’ Health Ministry announced on Monday that 3 people died from COVID-19 and 446 new cases were detected from a total of 42,427 tests. The positivity rate stands at 1.05% while 278 patients are in hospitals of whom 98 are in serious condition.

Total deaths rose to 444 and total cases since the pandemic broke out to 106,428. The Ministry announced that 88.13% of the patients treated in hospital are not vaccinated.

The deceased are a man 72 years old who passed away yesterday at the Famagusta Reference Hospital, a woman 85 years old who died today at the Limassol General Hospital and a man 61 years who died at the ICU of the Nicosia General Hospital.

Of the 444 deaths 290 are male (65%) and 154 female (35%) and their median age is 77.1 years.

A 24-year-old patient is treated at Famagusta General Hospital, as more patients with fake safepass were admitted

A 24-year-old patient is being treated at Famagusta General Hospital, operating as a coronavirus reference hospital, where more people who had received fake safe pass certificates also received treatment.

Amalia Hadjiyianni, Scientific Director of the Famagusta and Larnaca, told CNA that there are 66 patients with COVID-19 and eight are receiving treatment in the Increased Care Unit. The youngest patient is aged 24 and the oldest 90- years-old with the median age of patients being 58 -years- old.

‘Red alert’ for risk of fires continues to be in place on Tuesday

The Department of Forests has said that a “red alert” for risk of fire continues to be in place on Tuesday. It urged the public to refrain from activities that may cause fires and to cooperate with authorities.

Whoever sees smoke or fire inside or near forests should contact the nearest Forest Station or call the Forestry Department at 1407 or the Fire Service at 112.

The public is reminded that lighting a fire without a permit is punishable with a fine and/or imprisonment, and that lighting a fire for cooking is only allowed in the specified areas at picnic sites. Lighting a fire without a permit is punishable with a fine up to €50,000 and/or imprisonment up to ten years, based on the forest law or a fine of up to €20,000 and/or imprisonment up to five years.

The public is also urged not to proceed with any activities that might spark a fire

Department of Forests ready to tackle fires, says its Director

We are ready to fight every day, to spring into action to deal with any fires, Department of Forests Director, Charalambos Alexandrou, told CNA, adding that the reaction to any message about fire or smoke is immediate.

We are ready to mobilise in zero time, to deal with any fire and we have powerful means to combat fires now, fire trucks, ground fire extinguishing equipment and air tankers, he said.

Now we have more means available for immediate response in all regions, said Alexandrou, adding that with the first message that there is a fire outbreak, “we are ready to fight”.

“Future of Europe” the theme of this year’s Bled Strategic Forum in Slovenia

The 16th Bled Strategic Forum international conference will be held on 1–2 September 2021, in Bled, Slovenia, under the title “Future of Europe”.

EU continues to mobilise assistance for Greece and other countries to battle wildfires

The EU Civil Protection Mechanism continues to channel support to help combat unprecedented forest fires in Greece and the rest of the Mediterranean, a press release of the European Commission said on Monday.

Following requests from Greece, North Macedonia, Albania, Italy and Turkey, the European Union has now helped mobilise 14 firefighting planes, 3 helicopters, some 1,300 rescuers and 250 vehicles.

In Greece alone, 9 planes, close to 1,000 fire fighters and 200 vehicles are currently being deployed.

Total motor vehicles registrations increase slightly in the first seven months of 2021

The total registrations of motor vehicles increased by 1.5% to 22.074 in January-July 2021, from 21,752 in January – July 2020, the Statistical Service of Cyprus said Monday.

Passenger saloon cars increased to 16,979 from 16,720, rising by 1.5%. Of the total passenger saloon cars, 6,971 or 41.1% were new and 10,008 or 58.9% were used cars.

Coaches and buses registered in January-July 2021 decreased to 38, from 213 in the same period of 2020.

Goods conveyance vehicles decreased by 9.9% to 2,535 in January-July 2021, compared with 2,815 in January-July 2020. In particular, light goods vehicles decreased by 17.5% to 1,865 and heavy goods vehicles by 1.6% to 313, while road tractors (units of trailers) increased by 36.2% to 128 and rental vehicles by 60.1% to 229.
