Cyprus police hand out 61 fines in a total of 3,435 checks for COVID violations

Police in Cyprus fined 59 individuals and 2 establishment owners for violations of measures to contain COVID-19 in a total of 3,435 checks carried out during the last 24 hours across the island.

An officer from the Police Press Office told the Cyprus News Agency that in Nicosia the Police carried out 275 checks and fined 2 people, in Limassol 23 individuals and 2 owners of establishments were fined in a total of 315 checks and in Larnaka 7 people were fined in 428 checks.

In Famagusta the checks carried out were 1,406 and the Police fined 23 people while in Morphou 236 checks were conducted and no violation was reported.

More than 70% of adult population in Cyprus fully vaccinated

More than 70% of the adult population in Cyprus is fully vaccinated against COVID19, the Ministry of Health said Monday.

Based on data until the 14th of August, 70.3% of Cyprus` adult population have completed their vaccination. The corresponding percentage in the EU is 62.4%.

The Ministry says that 76.6% of the adult population have received at least the first dose of a vaccine adding that the goal is for that percentage to reach 80% by the end of August. In the EU, the corresponding percentage stands at 73%.

Regarding the 16-17 age group, 32% have received the first dose while 22.3% are fully vaccinated. Inoculations for the 12-15 age group began on the 2nd of August. Until the 14th of August 8.6% of them received the first dose.

Five more COVID-19 patients die in Cyprus, 381 coronavirus cases traced on Monday

Cyprus Health Minister announced on Monday that five more COVID-19 patients died, while 381 new coronavirus cases were traced. The positivity rate is 0.86%.

The number of people who lost their life due to COVID-19 is now 461 and the number of confirmed cases 109,253.

Moreover, 243 COVID-19 patients are treated in hospital. The condition of 85 of them is critical, while 81.2% of the patients who are treated in hospital have not been vaccinated. Forty – six out of the 85 patients whose condition is critical are intubated, one is treated in an Intensive Treatment Unit but is not intubated and 38 in an Increased Care Unit.

Dr Pana says no room for complacency despite high percentage of fully vaccinated

Member of the advisory scientific committee of experts on COVID-19 and Pediatrics Lecturer at European University Cyprus Zoi Dorothea Pana has told CNA that despite the high percentage of fully vaccinated adults in Cyprus there should be no room for complacency and people must strictly follow health protocols.

Cyprus expresses readiness to assist in fighting the wildfires in Israel

Cyprus has expressed readiness to assist in fighting the wildfires that rage in Israel.

Cyprus Foreign Minister said in a post on Twitter that Foreign Minister, Nikos Christodoulides, had a telephone conversation with his Israeli counterpart, Yair Lapid, regarding the wildfires raging near Jerusalem.

It added that “Cyprus stands ready to assist in every way possible”.

Red alert for forest fires remains in effect on Tuesday

Cyprus Forestry Department has announced that a red alert for fires will remain in effect on Tuesday.

The Department urged the public to be careful during their activities outdoors and avoid actions and activities that are likely to cause a fire, such as the use of tools or agricultural machinery producing sparks or flames.

Furthermore, the statement said that the fine for those who start a fire without a license amounts to up to 10 years in prison or €50,000 or both sentences combined according to the forest law of 2012, and up to five years in jail or €20,000 according to the Prevention of Fires in the Rural Areas Act 1988.

Cyprus met Office issues yellow warning for extreme high temperature

The Meteorological Department of Cyprus has issued on Monday a yellow warning for extreme high temperature throughout the island.

It is valid from 2100 yesterday evening until 1600 today.

Maximum temperatures today are expected to be around 40 C inland.

The Cyprus Forestry Department has also announced that a “red alert” warning for risk of fire will continue to be in effect on Monday and is urging the public to refrain from activities that may cause fire.

A press release issued on Sunday urges whoever sees smoke or fire inside or near forests to contact the nearest Forest Station or call the Forestry Department at 1407 or the Fire Service at 112.
