Cyprus President thanks Cypriots who assisted in firefighting effort in Greece

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades has expressed his gratitude to Cypriots who assisted in the firefighting effort in Greece.

In a message on Twitter, President Anastasiades said he had been in touch with the head of the team on behalf of the Fire Service Demetris Katsiflis and the head of the Civil Defence team Chrysilios Chrysiliou “to express by gratitude for their contribution in putting out the fires.”

Four Civil Defence members of the group and one injured fireman returned to Cyprus late on Wednesday evening.

Chief of National Guard General Staff pays official visit to Serbia [VIDEO]

Chief of the National Guard General Staff, Lieutenant General Demokritos Zervakis, held a two day official visit to Serbia on August 10 and 11, at the invitation of his Serbian counterpart General Milan Mojsilovic.

According to a press release by the National Guard General Staff, the visit falls within the framework of the bilateral programme of defence cooperation between the two states. Zevrakis’ meetings focused on the developments in the Balkan region and the wider Eastern Mediterranean, as well as on various aspects concerning the cooperation between the armed forces of the two countries.

Imposter website in India posing as CySEC website

The Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC) said on Thursday that an imposter website set up in India poses as the real CySEC website.

“The Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (‘CySEC’) would like to draw the attention of the public to the fact that, its website has been copied illegally by another website hosted by a company based in India, resembling that of the real CySEC website”, the announcement read.

“This website is a scam and not associated with CySEC”, it said.

Red alert warning for risk of fire to continue to be in effect on Friday

Cyprus Forestry Department has announced that a “red alert” warning for risk of fire will continue to be in effect on Friday, urging the public to refrain from activities that may cause fire and to cooperate with the authorities.

According to the announcement, whoever sees smoke or fire inside or near forests should contact the nearest Forest Station or call the Forestry Department at 1407 or the Fire Service at 112.

It notes that lighting a fire without a permit is punishable with a fine and/or imprisonment, and that lighting a fire for cooking is only allowed in the specified areas at picnic sites.

Use of local cards increases significantly in Q2

The use of local cards in Cyprus and abroad recorded a significant annual increase between April and June 2021, data from the card-processing organisation JCC showed.

Th use of local cards, issued by banks registered in Cyprus, in the second quarter of 2021 rose to €1.5 bn, an annual increase of 16%.

The use of local cards abroad recorded an even bigger increase of 46% and amounted to €472 mn.

The use of foreign cards was up by an impressive 155% in the second quarter, compared to the same period last year, reaching €184,8 mn. An increase of 113% was recorded in the use of foreign cards in Cyprus, both for sales and withdrawals amounting to €231,6 mn.

JCC said that the use of Turkish cards in Cyprus reached €1,18 mn in Q2, whereas the use of local cards in the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus amounted to approximately €1,21 mn.<

Cyprus Health Ministry reports two deaths, 402 new coronavirus cases, 276 patients who are hospitalised

The Ministry of Health announced on Thursday the death of two COVID-19 patients, bringing the total number of deaths to 454,

(296 men, 158 women). Their median age is 77.

Meanwhile, it announced that 276 patients are receiving treatment in state hospitals, 95 of whom in a serious condition. It is noted that 84.43% of all hospitalised are not vaccinated.

In addition, 402 new cases were detected in the last 24 hours (positivity rate 0.75%) . Since the pandemic broke out there have been 107,887 coronavirus infections in Cyprus.

The two people who have died are a 72 year old and a 91 year old man, who passed away on the 11th of August.

Out of the 95 patients who are in a critical condition, 51 are intubated. In Famagusta General Hospital there are 64 patients, in Nicosia General Hospital 31, 76 patients are in Limassol G
