New warning for extremely high temperatures on Monday

The Meteorology Department issued an orange warning for extreme high temperature, valid for Monday.

In a press release it said the warning is in effect from 0100 until 1700 on Monday, August 2, 2021. Tonight, the minimum temperature is expected to fall to around 27 degrees Celsius over inland areas and to around 26 degrees Celsius over the south, the east and north coast,

On Monday, the maximum temperature is expected to be around 42 degrees Celsius over inland areas and around 35 degrees Celsius over the highest mountainous areas.

Cypriot sailor Pavlos Kontides finishes fourth at Tokyo 2020 Olympics

For only three penalty points, Cypriot sailor Pavlos Kontides failed to win a medal at the Tokyo Olympics, finishing in fourth place in the men’s Laser sailing category.

Pavlos Kontides finished sixth in the medal race and took the fourth place in the final standings with 88 penalty points. He had secured participation in the medal race being fourth in the overall standings after ten races.

Around 188,000 of the adults in Cyprus have not yet been vaccinated for COVID, says Ministry of Health

More than 188,000 adults in Cyprus have not yet been vaccinated, according to estimates by the Ministry of Health. In total, 73.8% of the adult population was vaccinated with at least the first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

In a press release on Sunday, the Ministry said that it estimates that 188,090 people aged 18 years and over have not yet been vaccinated, of which 129,267 are between 18-39 years old.

The Ministry notes that 73.8% of the adult population was vaccinated with at least the first dose, while 65.3% of them completed their vaccination.

In relation to vaccination coverage by district, Paphos is in 1st place, with 84% of its population having received at least the first jab. Famagusta and Nicosia follow with 80.4% and 74.1% respectively. The coverage for Limassol is 71.8%.

Cyprus reports one COVID-19 death on Sunday, 277 new cases, 301 hospitalisations

The Ministry of Health announced on Sunday the death of one patient to COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 422, while 301 people are in state hospitals, 86 of whom in a serious condition. It is noted that 89.85% of those hospitalised are not vaccinated.

In addition, 277 new coronavirus cases were detected. The positivity rate stands at 1.19%. The total number of cases since the pandemic broke out reached 102,223.

The patient who succumbed is a 52 year old man. Deaths rose to 422 (277 men and 145 women). Their median age is 77.2.

Out of the 86 patients who are in a critical condition, 42 are intubated. The Museum of Underwater Sculpture at Ayia Napa is ‘a jewel of the Mediterranean’ officials say at opening ceremony

The Museum of Underwater Sculpture at Ayia Napa (MUSAN) “is a jewel of the Mediterranean”, said on Saturday Minister of Transport Communications and Works, Yiannis Karousos.

Addressing the opening ceremony, he said the MUSAN, which is located on the renowned marine protected area (MPA) of Ayia Napa named Pernera, in the south east coast of Cyprus, was created by the internationally renowned artist, Jason deCaires Taylor and offers visitors a unique experience demonstrating the relationship between humans, nature, the environment and the sea.

Karousos said the inauguration of MUSAN proves that “when there is a will and cooperation, we can perform miracles” and said MUSAN will be known worldwide through the promotion which will be carried on by the Deputy Ministry for Tourism.

Cyprus raises level of preparedness for forest fires, Forestry Department director tells CNA

Cyprus’ fire preparedness level has been raised to its highest possible point, forestry department director Charalambos Alexandrou told CNA, who said that on Saturday a very difficult and serious situation was addressed successfully in Kyperounta village.

Alexandrou stressed that the preparedness to deal with fires throughout Cyprus resembles that in case of a war, since the risk of fires is at the level of “red alert”.

As he mentioned, currently there are 15 guardhouses throughout Cyprus and 22 observation posts allowing the dispersal of forces throughout all areas controlled by the Republic of Cyprus.

Tourist arrivals in August expected to be slightly better than June, says Minister

Tourist arrivals in August are expected to range in the same levels with July but are expected to be slightly better than June, according to Deputy Tourism Minister Savvas Perdios.
